It’s gonna happen. I’m still gonna avoid what I can, but you cant expect to not hit any rocks and have perfect bases

It is, unfortunately, totally normal if you’re skiing hard and having fun. My favorite skis all seem to get core shots within the first week. Tools not jewels.

I have a few pairs dedicated for low tide times.

I can fix my shots, but it's just work I'd rather not have to do!

Thicker better bases certainly help versus a shittier thin extruded base. It's all anecdotal but my arvs seemed to have had really soft bases compared to the durasurf (also thicker) on my current skis. I've hit so many rocks these past few years and no core shots miraculously.

That’s cute you guys get enough snow to complain about rock shots. Where I ski, there’s exposed rocks and dirt for probably 1/2 or at least 1/3 of the season and if I worried about core shots I barely would ever get to ride my skis lol

Quite a few companies use Durasurf 4001 like ON3P. It is the same base across the board. It is made in the same factory regardless of company. I have gotten a core shot with Durasurf 4001.

Me too, I’ve got a couple pairs of Moments with a couple of core shots each. I’m not sure if it’s a difference in thickness or what, but my ON3P are fucking indestructible compared to my already durable Moments.

This thread couldn't be more relevant. Hit chair 6 at crystal yesterday. Was bony af up top and the clif band was gnar as well. I hit less rocks riding urban with sn ice cube tray worth or snow.

At least i took the park board out. A few people had the new new, yikes

Yeah, but they could be way heavier. My 108 Jeffries are significantly heavier than my 116 Wildcats. Makes em harder to spin for sure.

I remember when I got back into skiing around 7th grade and a small resort opened 20 minutes away from me and all my homies and I jumped off rocks deep in the PA woods on our downhill Rossi skis. Looking back we may have been totally jerrys but we had a blast.

They also said the 1.8mm made the Moments damper than they wanted too and less lively. Also, didn’t match with the edge size. I think moment uses 2.2mm edges vs 2.5mm ON3P. TGR is a great resource lol

I actually purposely ski this way. If I am going over a rock band or over some sketchy terrain Ill be sure to float my bases over it then hit the brakes with a turn when I get back into fresh snow.

There are sharp shark tooth rocks, and there are smooth rocks.
Shark tooth goes through any base, be it hard, soft, thick, or thin.

A lot of times for me the ones that really getya are the ones you don't even feel. Hit a big blunt rock and you think you blew it up but there's only scratches on your base and edges. Ski all day early season and when you put em up for the day see a huge gouge missing lol

Lol this spring the sherburne trail on mount washington was closed part way down

we ended up skiing over rock gardens on the tuckerman ravine trail the rest of the way 😂 good times
