I hate bob nutting but at least our parks here had alright funding. So sad to see this happen, Springs’ parks are on an upward trend and are honestly in a golden age right now.
You can't. The majority of people who utilize these places are too naive or actually enjoy vail resorts and their amenities. They also know no better and are purely focused on the most popular resorts. If I had a nickel for how many times someone in the airport asked if I was going to ski Breckenridge, omg I could probably buy the resort. The only way vail declines or gives up resorts is by reductions in pass sales and declines in traffic from passes at select resorts.
Tbh tho as long as vail doesn't buy more west coast or big east coast places (doubtful to both cuz they will), it will be fine cuz it concentrates traffic to those Epic pass resorts and away from the others we care about.

I think that's the point of them buying up all the small shitty places. It expands their market reach. Now they got folks convinced to buy an Epic pass because they can ski at their local place and then go out west on a trip and not have to pay for lift tickets. What people forget is how much they will be spending on food and lodging and skis and rentals. Then how many will never even make a trip? Collective passes are nice when they give access to independent mountains who all share the revenue from passes, but when one company holds the majority of those places, it puts the industry in a precarious situation as skierman clearly described. Also allows them to dictate prices on everything because "where else you gonna ski".
Also RIP Mondays in March at 7 springs where you ski free with a season pass from any other resort.
Two east coast places I hope never fall to Vail's hands: Smugglers Notch and Jay Peak. Jay is for sale but it's so remote that who tf wants to buy it, especially with all the baggage it comes with so in that regard, I have hope. Smuggs on the other hand would be a gold mine for Vail. Imagine owning Stowe plus Smuggs? Fuck.

Let me give another example of vail not supporting parks. My home hill in Ohio was purchased by vail when they bought peak resorts a couple years ago. Our park crew had started construction of a fairly large quad kink shotgun rail. It was about half way done when vail took over. Vail wouldn’t give park crew a single dime to finish it, they had to pay 700$ out of their own paychecks to finish the rail

My biggest issue with vail is that they killed affordability when they acquired my home mountain. We had a night only pass that was like $200ish that had a huge reach in my area, especially with school kids, that no longer exists. The epic passes are a good deal if you travel, but most locals don't. It's a bummer because I don't think anyone that I grew up riding with, including myself, would be skiers of the vail pricing structure existed 15 years ago at our mountain. You're either all in or fucked with vail, their learn to ski programs are shit compared to what we had before. For their goal of using these small hills to feed their larger mountains they are doing a good job of killing off a large portion of future skiers. To be fair Peak resorts started the downfall, vail has just accelerated it.
really saddening, I'm holding out hope that what they say happens just doesn't. Until the worst happens Im holding out hope, great meme content though.
There’s a good chance that someone you ski with or someone you know from skiing owns stock in Vail Resorts (MTN). Convince them to sell it. Convince everyone you know who owns stock in Vail to sell it. Will every day retail investors make a considerable difference ? No. That’s why it’s important to use a variety of tactics. If you are unfortunate enough to call a Vail affiliated resort your home, spend as little money as possible when you are there. Don’t buy food, park for free where you can, buy beer off hill (shit you probably already do anyway because Vail makes everything to do with skiing unaffordable for most people). If you have the choice to ski at a resort owned by Vail vs. a resort not owned by Vail, choose the latter. When your friends and family who don’t ski very often are planning their Christmas ski vacation, make sure to tell them to avoid Vail and it’s affiliates.

When you grow up in an area of mountains that have consistently BAD terrain parks and the only good option (Big Boulder) is destroyed, a whole community of riders is left in the dust. The next best option for most in Pennsylvania was to go make the trip to 7springs now that's not even an option. It's not that easy.
I think that having Vail own it can have some upsides since they have mountains with great parks but I do think that they will cut down on the amount of them after all they might keep almost all of the Same workers and just change management I think it will be a toss up until we really see what happens.

Instead, you gotta have a business approach. VR loves data. If there is anyway to showcase the need for an emphasis on parks with a data driven approach, they will at least bite. Its gotta be non-malicious so dont show them this thread lol.
Off the top of my head, if there was say a survey sent out asking what influences your 7 springs pass purchase and a large population states because of the quality of parks then they would have the data to back that this is a smart business direction for them to continue to pursue.

My dream is someone like Batman comes along and starts buying up all those little abandoned ski resorts u see from time to time, and make them pure terrain parks. Parks don’t need to be these elegant 5 mile rides. All we truly need is a slope, features and a lift back up… and sum cold dranks
You’re exactly right. They get you to commit to a season with them and have you buy spring/summer/fall passes to offset decline in revenue. Then they get you to make on mountain purchases because they have their hand in every little shop and hotel in the village. They piloted this program with the 3 Midwest resorts they initially had. Only problem is that the current resort offering is a bit more jumbled and I don’t think they’re going to get the ROI they expected from some of these resorts’ clientele. It’s also why they bought 3 resorts in australia - Generate some Revenue in lean season and Aussies love to travel so they’ll use their Aussie epic pass in USA and Canada come winter.
VR is hitting a limit though because many countries don’t operate their resorts like Australia/Canada/USA so they don’t have much more room for expansion.

Would also like to add that I too ended up buying an Ikon this year, part of the reason was the park situation (I live in CO, A51 was sad last year while Copper was firing).

Idk figure it out. I live in summit county Colorado so i honestly dont give a fuck about 7 springs lol. But damn i did loved watching the steel city showdown.
make it on survey monkey or something. Send it here on ns AND elsewhere. Provide where ya sent it so they dont think its bias data. Include emails and names. Figure out who does their urban/northeast market research and plop that bitch on their table with big dick energy lol. Or ya know. Send it to them in an email. Either way. Outline how people are excited to be part of a larger network or resorts AND maintaining the culture of the resort.

This is all paraphrased from a rando at a skatepark like 2 years ago, talking about how to get cities to build skateparks, but the idea was a two-pronged approach. You simultaneously create a problem while proposing the solution - the expansion/improvement of the parks.
One prong is proposing the solution. Everything above-board and professional with a smile on your face. Create petitions/surveys, host jams or unofficial meetups, create and/or support fan pages for your parks etc. Be tenacious and keep at it even when it seems like your efforts are going nowhere. Check out @gorgeroadpark on Insta, they saved their dirt jumps using these tactics and even got a bunch of pros involved.
As we know, sometimes those efforts truly do go nowhere, which brings us to the second prong, underground activities to create the problem that is solved by improving/expanding the terrain park. Nothing illegal but get out and act like the whole mountain is your park. Build booters/log rails/features and build them again when they get destroyed. Be your best scum-core self.
Absurd amounts of effort required, but If you can manage both of these you'll be putting a lot of pressure on management in favour of park funding.

If we got companies on board to help show VR that there is a want and need for the parks and legitimate business for it having some brands and people would really show them that they should keep and grow the parks

yes it was that bad. BB only had a single park until like late December and the lift for that park took a shit not even a month into the season. They never fixed it. They only had 2 lifts spinning mid season cuz they were so understaffed. Giant shit show

Freedom lift has been broken for like three years now with no sign of repair in sight. Doesnt even matter anymore though cause Vail REMOVED FREEDOM PARK FROM THE MOUNTAIN COMPLETELY...
