I hate bob nutting but at least our parks here had alright funding. So sad to see this happen, Springs’ parks are on an upward trend and are honestly in a golden age right now.
Bummed i didnt get the job. Had only worked 5 years in parks at that point but loved how sick the parks always looked. For the east coast them mt snow, bb, loon and a few others were always up there but otherwise some shotty parks in between.
Never made it there because it was like 6 or 7 hoirs from where i grew up and never worked at a mtn much closer while i lived there.
I know people had gripes with the springs but this still seems like a sad day.
Sad all of the best parks are only dying because of vail at this point, if only they'd add to the park ski scene with the money they have they could have some of the best parks around.
so last year with COVID im sure parks were effected. Any inside scoop on where big boulder or mt snows parks are going??
If Carinthia goes then pretty much all of Southern New York, CT, Long Island, Rhode Island and Mass are going too. Not driving 8 hours round trip in one day to ski a park, that'll just be the end of it for a whole lot of people...

I get thos, but it also creates room for growth in the smaller resorts. Sure they won't have 5 or 6 parks, probably wont have a pipe. And probably wont have inferno jumps, but smaller mtns are starting to step up.
Social media and being aware of other mtns is helping this.
What parks always need, and now more than ever, is motivated people to step up and make their local a sick spot. Even a mtn without cat time can get a good rail park in.
A mtn with no rails? Get donations and build them or have somebody else build them. Rails aren't that expensive to build. Paint em up noce and boom mtn looks like the sickest spot even if it's tiny and has no funding.
I get it, it's fucking sad to see these park powerhoise mtns go VR. VR hates parks. But the industry can use people getting involved in the parks.

I grew up skiing at Springs and live in Michigan now. Vail owns a tiny place here called Mt. Brighton and they actually put out a pretty sick rope tow park every season, so I'm hoping that's a sign that they'd keep the beard tow going.
This is a very sad day, one of the best things about Springs was the local vibe. If they kill the Goggle and the Parks (especially The Alley) then the place is never again going to be what it was sadly.

Oh yeah I wasn't saying I think Carinthia is doomed, I was just saying like Mount Snow losing Carinthia (If that did happen) would be legitimately traumatic for east coast park skiing and boarding. Ask 860 Media why them and every other CT rider shreds Snow more often than Southington

this honestly makes me sad. grew up skiing there and still ski there to this day. I’ve been hearing rumors about vail looking into buying springs for the past year now but I was hoping it wouldn’t happen. But here we are. #fuckvailresorts let’s get a chant going guys

Big Boulder is already slaughtered. I had bought a pass there last year before they fired Pat Morgan (park manager basically ran shit there) right before the season started. Park crew held it down heavy but there is no more community there, no more events, no more comps, charity runs, discount nights, NOTHING. Once and a while you will run into another park rider. It’s bad.

Had pass there last year. Park crew held it down heavy even though they opened mid January and didn’t get more than two parks open till late season. Community here is completely gone though you will rarely see another rider. Vail crippled Boulder
Man Vail is going to buy everything eventually. Hordes of ski bums will flee to the mountains and form their own communities and mini resorts. Skipocalyspe
The worst thing with vail in parks is the lack of events. Sure they nerf any xl parks and make the program smaller in general usually, but the lack of events is shitty. Any fun park events that gkve the mtn character get axed.
They might have the usasa slopestyle rail jam but no real events.
Hopefully they keep the parks going like they have with some of the larger park mtns

They already told our manager to clear the welding shop…
Bottom line is Vail Resorts clearly doesn't care at all about parks, freestyle skiing, or snowboarding. Ten years ago, regardless of snow, Vail, Breck (always with a 3 jump line), Keystone, and Beaver Creek would all have a decent size park at a minimum with a dozen features on opening day, even if only run one was open because of lack of snow.
It's all been downhill for all Vail Resorts areas when it comes to park skiing. Rn over a week this past Thanksgiving, BC, Vail, Breck, don't have any park period. Keystone has a rail park rn, but it used to be an expectation (we're talking 2010) that A-51 would be fully open by thanksgiving break every year, and that Breck would open up in the first few weeks of November with a 3 jump line in Breck, even if the snow was shit. Furthermore, even Vail and BC had solid opening day rail parks with 10+ feature every opening day.
Every single Ikon resort in CO had a solid park this year from opening day; Copper, WP, and even A Basin and Eldora. Think I'm gonna buy an Ikon pass tomorrow for the first time when I'm living in the Eagle Valley. I just have no faith in Vail even making good parks (or any...) at any of their mountains, especially in the Vail Valley. For those of you 'young folk', Breck, Keystone, Copper and Vail were the mecca of park skiing for the decade of the of the 2000's. Shit's changed and it's a bummer, but Vail clearly has zero consideration for park skiing at their resorts when they're making a decision like killing the best park in the Mid-Atlantic so they can sell more tickets to conservative-vibe skiers (not entirely, but somewhat political), which I understand has short term positive economic effects but simultaneously kills the core ski culture which the whole industry heavily depends on.
/End rant. I definitely am hot rn between the bad snowpack everywhere out West combined with this VR stuff, but consider giving this a read. No TL:DR on this one, maybe I'm emotional about this stuff but I certainly stand behind everything I said.

Maybe not a full on buying spree, but unfortunately consolidation will probably continue unless somebody (hopefully Vail) implodes in a debt crisis. My heart was broken when I lived in Washington for a minute and Stevens Pass and Crystal were sold after I left, and then my home resort Sugarbush sold as well (although tbf I'll take Alterra over Vail any day).
Absolutely dreading the day Taos is sold, that'd make it 3/3 of favorite local resorts consolidated
