Is it side jumping if you jump over the rail

personally i’ve never done this but would it count as side jumping to just jump over the rail? like technically you’re not hitting the feature but like are you wearing down the lip in any abnormal way? i mean technically they’re still using the feature as an obstacle.

jumping over gets a pass. Just make sure you nose tap the rail or do a spin.

def good to go, if the lip is small I will do this as a sort of speed check. If I can make it over the rail then I can make it onto it ya know?

ive done this before too to get hyped to hit a feature i hadnt hit before. if you can pop over the rail then you can definitely pop onto the rail

Imo it's okay either way as long as you actually jump instead of rolling over the lip, fucking up the takeoff. Also I know people that did a 180 over the rail like that to get over their fear of doing a 2 on.

Seriously, how does the lip know whether you actually hit the rail or not? They only get fucked up if people just ride over them without catching air. How does jumping over the rail wear down the lip less than jumping parallel to the rail?

ok now you’ve really got a point like does side jumping actually wear it down at all? it’s still annoying because these mfs dont look where they’re going and get in the way so i don’t think it matters.

this is very true, the lip only gets really fucked up when kids are coming into it in a high speed snow plow at a crazy angle. If you're going straight off of it it's no different from hitting the rail

I'd argue it's frustrating for a few reasons. First being that often times side jumpers come off the lip at a significantly different angle than those actually hitting the features because their goal is to completely avoid it. Once or twice this isn't an issue, but repeat it and it can def make the takeoff sketchy.

Even if they are hitting it from a more similar angle, it's still going to wear down the lip. Any action on the lip is gonna wear it down, even when hitting the features correctly. Definitely annoying when people side jump because I feel like if the lip is getting worn down, I want it to be getting worn down by people are at least hitting the feature/trying to progress in the park. Obviously this is tricky because you could argue that they're trying to progress too, but if it's a group of race groms ripping through and hitting all the side jumps then it doesn't really seem like park progression is their goal.

Also I feel like a lot of the time you see this they're going too slow to get much or any air and in turn wearing the lip down faster

Honestly, to me, the most annoying part about people hitting the rail kickers is their tendency to go super slow and/or snake. I never even thought about its effect on the snow because they are usually out on the edges, trying to jump away from the rail.

True but if me and someone are at same pace headed for a rail and I let them hit it only for them to not hit the rail imma be fuckin mad
