Dyeing my Boots

Hey guys,
so i Eric pollard posted this video of him dying his ski boots black https://www.instagram.com/p/CKMeD5env0u/ .

I was thinking of trying it myself since i`d love to have mine a darker colour, too. But i`m a little bit worried i might ruin the flex or the toe punches i`ve had done on them. All i could find are some tutorials on how to do it, but not really any experiences wether it ruined the boots or not.

Maybe some of yall have already tried this and can tell me how it went.

I dyed mine and everything is chills. Nothing wrong w the flex. I don’t have any punches tho so I can’t touch on that.

Yeah the water isn’t hot enough to fuck with the plastic. Just boil a shit ton of water, put your boots in a plastic tub, add the dye, add the water, let them sit for a few hours then rinse them. Easy peasy

Showing my age here but, the rit dye trick is ancient.
I dyed my rollerblades green 15 years ago.
Like the video shows, boil up a bunch of water to cover your shells in a plastic box/metal pot. Dump in a bunch of rit dye and then leave it overnight and rinse off the excess. Plastic with a texture takes the dye better than smooth plastic. Greys and white plastics take the dye better and doing one colour over the other kind of works like mixing paint (I.e. Blue on yellow makes a green) but be prepared to accept whatever colour you get as there's no going back.

Very tempted to try this. Yellow fulltilts have been the death of my fits for years now. Guessing if its not as dark as I want it the first time I would just do the process over again? I also assume going from a lighter to a darker color should always work fine, just some lighter colors like white may take less dye than something like yellow.

I’m thinking about doing this to my FC10s since they are white it should take pretty well.

yeah uhh so far my shits lookin pretty brown😂 may have to hit em with a second round after this. Used 3 bottles of dye more btw

Graphite Rit Dyemore. I used like 2 bottles bc the og boots are lime green. Also, the smaller the container you soak them in, the more efficient the dye is

~2 hrs but the cooler the water gets, the less the dye sets in - I did mine over the summer so the heat kept it warmer longer

Really thinking about doing this to my head raptors with black. They have neon painted metal buckles that are non removable. Anyone know if the dye will soak into the buckles or if they will stay neon?

Yeah I've got mine in a bin suspended in an empty sink. Seems to be holding heat pretty well. I'll leave overnight just to get the most out of it.

I dyed my raptors, the white parts of the buckles took on color but the yellow didn’t. Also my punches shrunk a little bit.

yea idk shit about fuck either but I feel like it could dye the buckles if they are painted with acrylic. Rit dye more says it dyes acrylic. Really don't know what type of paint is on the buckles tho

Edit: Didn't see @TheWeaz post before replying. Those blue raptors look great btw and thanks for the info

That was right after I took them out of the water, they have lightened significantly since then after sitting in my garage all summer. I had white parts on my buckles, depending on year I think some have all yellow buckles.

Dont think it made them any softer but that boot is borderline too stiff for me anyway.

That is such a baller boot you got, I like the pin conversion and WTR soles. Did you get that done by CAST?
Seeing that pic definitely inspired me to do my boots. Thinking I’m gonna take my boots apart and do black on the bottom and dark purple on the top cuff. Thinking darker colors will do better against fading

Cast did the tech toes and added replaceable gripwalk soles. No surprise but the boot doesn’t walk well, still useful on rare occasions though.

What’s the rule in terms of what Colors I can use on boots? Like a darker color than boots right?

Like beige and blue couldn’t get dyed to pig pink or somethng like that bright

Try it out, if it looks bad or doesn’t take… then just dye em black 🤷‍♀️

It’s basically like dyeing Easter eggs but on your feet. Just do it outside so u don’t make a mess

Pretty much go darker than your existing color. Going from a light pink and using black gave me a really dark purple. Going from white obviously will yield the cleanest color but if your boots have color go darker. It’s kinda fun to just toss em in and see what you get, makes for very unique colors imo

Pretty cool ideas. I have red boots so they aren’t going to mix well with many colors. Would pretty much end up with a dark boot.

I dyed my Rossignol AllTracks a few days ago and they came out pretty good. The lower shell took the dye really well, but the upper cuff didn't take as well and turned sort of green. Stoked with the outcome though, since the cuffs are covered by my pants.

From what I can tell from the Rossignol website, the lower shell plastic is Polyether and the upper cuffs are Polyolefin, so check your boot material so you don't end up with puke colored boots.







For the dyeing, I used three bottles of black Rit DyeMore which was probably more than needed and I insulated the tub of boiling water with foam and a sealed lid to keep the boots as hot as possible so the dye would take better.

I checked the penetration of the dye by scratching it with a screwdriver, and it seemed to penetrate deep enough where new scratches wont show the underlying yellow color.
