Holy fuck I just skimmed this article. They should be making $25/hr minimum. We're talking people who drops bombs. People rappelling and using beacons and digging to save your life. Like what in the actual fuck. I'm talking about ski patrol at any major resort that does advanced stuff. Holy cow.

Some hills have their patrollers being volunteers basically, my best friend wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t of them idk they do more than what we think they do !

sunburst in WI’s patrol (all volunteer ) disbanded a couple years ago when a new owner saw the free passes given to patrol as “losing money”. dude wanted patrol to work for free and buy a pass.

Ha!, one of my friends is patrol at my local hill, He also teaches their Outdoor Emergency Care classes in the summer for newbies,...At best you and your family gets a free season pass,....In return your committed to a day EVERY weekend all winter. I'm glad somebody does it, But it isn't for me.

DeebieSkeebiesCops don't get paid much either when you consider that they're the first ones actually being called in certain cases when it comes to 911 calls. You need a safe and secure scene before doing any kind of patient treatment. Also a lot of EMS in the US comes down to state and local legislation along with laws/guidelines and protocols, and yeah ultimately funding and money. Certain areas are able to do what others can't and its because of lawmakers being cheap.

Do you even know how much cops make? It's too much. Their unions are powerful and it shows in not only avoiding consequences but also in getting paid 6 figures. Shit cops get paid to wear body cams some places ffs.

Pretty sure thats the deal at my local in MI. For sure its all volunteer though. Every Saturday though patrol puts on one heck of a potluck in the patrol room and if you're lucky someone will invite you up.

Just FYI for everyone asking about Union - yes, Park City patrol is unionized. Them along with Breck I think are the only 2 resorts unionized.

They union and resort are talking, but it is not going well or smooth or fast.

It looks like these are local Unions. I wonder if its possible to get some kind of national union? I did a google search and saw this but I dont know how legit it is

As a free market guy, I think Unions are incredibly important to the market of labor. Typically there is a balance of supply and demand for labor with enough competition among employers to offer the best wages to attract the best workers. The problem is when employers have a monopoly like Vail and that competition to drive up the price of labor disappears. Its natural then for labor to collectivize to balance out the bargaining power of monopolistic employers.

Even if Patrollers get a bump in pay the number of days they get to work is going to be going down.

Global warming and hills won't even bother attempting to open much before Christmas if general staffing issues continue and they can't get J1s and all the housing is taken up by Tech work from home transplants.


That being said patrollers are needed more than ever if its crowded AF with shit snow and fuck all open.

Where are cops getting 6 figures? I live in one of the top 10 biggest metropolitan areas in the US, generally police friendly city, and they make 50-60k a year. My old criminal justice professor told everyone “it’s enough to live the American dream but you won’t get rich” which I think is pretty accurate…

Pretty much the Same here....you sorta don't make anything the first year because what you save on getting a free pass is spent on buying the ski patrol coat and the book you need to study for the course

You wanna shit your pants, go look at Seattle police rates; I only learned of this after a cop made national news for making 400k in a year with all his overtime. I get it, it's expensive to live in Seattle but their cops make a fuck ton and more than me if I moved there. If you're diligent about saving, you could easily retire with a good chunk of cash. For how much cops get paid, they could be a bit nicer.

Or doing security at the PGA event at my place. They stand around while rich folks get hammered for 6 hours. Although I just saw one of them escort a family of 3 with dogs across the street, sirens and all, because it was dark and cars wouldn’t stop coming at 50mph. I hate when things aren’t always black and white. Pun intended…

Another thing I want to point out that I think gets glossed over a lot is that being a rookie patroller is not an "entry level" job in the way a liftie or beginner instructor is.

To even get in the door you need to:

1. Be a better skier than 97% of people on the mountain. I think we take this one for granted, but it takes an immense amount of practice and investment to get to that level. I've seen candidates who were otherwise well qualified get turned down because they didn't have good form in rock hard bumps or couldn't do a kick turn well enough.

2. Have medical certification. Whether EMT, OEC, or some other cert, this takes a lot of time and minimum $1000, sometimes much more.

3. Get lots of gear. You can expect to trash one pair of skis a year with ski cutting and hitting shit early season. You might get a gear stipend but it probably won't even cover one pair of skis on pro form. Not to mention everything else like helmets (which are required but not provided), avy gear (you might get a beacon but need your own shovel and probe), boots, poles, and all your base layers.

4. Have avalanche training. Some patrols do this in house, but some require AIARE 1 or similar to be considered, which is at least $400.

Then after your first year it's incumbent on you to:


1. Maintain your medical certification

2. Keep buying more gear. Maybe your stipend goes up maybe not.

3. Get additional outside training in areas such as: avalanche and weather forecasting, explosives licensing, rope rescue, or dog training, all of which isn't paid for by the mountain.

As you can see the costs just pile up and you can quickly spend everything you make just trying to maintain your career. Beyond that you still somehow have to make ends meet.

Am I right in seeing this that ski patrol sidesteps wide swaths of the mountain early season to pack down snow or assess conditions? I don't think I've ever noticed it but looks too steep and/or narrow to be snow cats.
