How do I ski with poles

I stopped using poles for park but I need to learn again for big mountain. Any suggested videos on what to do with pole because when I'm not pol planting I don't know what to do with them.

Do you just have them sticking out to the side?
How do you guys find poles in the park on rails, especially full sized poles? (If doing a park lap)

Pole plants should be well in front of you on your downhill-facing side. Proper-length poles will help you reach forward and keep your weight on the front of your skis. Plant just before you initiate your next turn and be sure not to let your uphill pole drop in the middle of the turn. Pretend you’re holding a steering wheel if you want to have really solid form.

Practice with longer turns at first and get the timing down. Good pole plants are really critical in steep, nasty terrain but I’m unsure how they help in the park.

haha. I have always used poles and my pole plants still look fuckin cringe. One run, they're close to my body. One run I have pole plant steeze, and another, my arms are flailing behind me(high fuckin speeds). This year ill get my technique down. I have so much room to improve, I'm so stoked.

I still like to ski without poles occasionally to work on my overall balance but dear lord I can’t imagine skiing without them regularly.

The feeling of the pole plant and throwing your hips and weight around the pole on a steep face - There’s nothing like it!!

Honestly just watch the good skiers at ur home mtn who use poles from the lift and copy them. That’s how I properly learned “ski pole technique” when I started skiing

But nah in all seriousness what’s the confusion? Just hold onto them with your hands? Only real secret is don’t put the strap around your wrist.

Thank you, I have never in my life owned a pair of poles living in the midwest, but now that I moved out west I had to cop a pair... That being said, still have no idea how to use them LOL. This was helpful though.

I always use my pole straps but understand why others wouldnt. However I find it to be the worst looking thing in the world to have straps on poles but not use them, they are so easy to remove, its literally one screw, if you arent gonna use them, take em off

A good way to practice proper pole plants is to side slip a little bit before engaging your uphill edges. Then, lean down the hill by planting your pole as far as you can down the hill and in front of you. Great technique for steep sketchy terrain especially but good for gaining muscle memory

I’m east coast.. so Im unfamiliar with this “powder” you speak of.. also I sit on my poles to avoid exactly that.

You hold onto the grip with the inner part of the strap in your palm. The other part of the strap goes over your knuckles.

Skiing with poles is like walking with shoes on.

if you know how to walk barefoot, you can do it with shoes on.

Happy to help, my guy. Put them inbetween ur legs like a toy horsie before u sit and they’ll poke thru the back of the lift. Feels mad secure under there lol

That’s why I hate bubble chairs or chairs where the gap at the end is tiny. Can’t fit the poles through on those lifts and it sucks.

Having solid fundamentals takes your skiing to a different tier for sure. My mom was an og mogul ripper and I kind of grew up with the same style but applied to freeride. It makes everything so much more fun and big couloirs feel like nothing

I clasp my palm over them so they’re between my palm and the grip. I keep them around for A) hanging on skis on rack and transport and B) it is way harder to retrieve poles you have dropped without straps
