Detuning edges

Just wondering if anyone has any tips of detuning edges for hitting rails. I’ve never done it before but I wanted to detune my edges for this season. Any tips help

I’m sure someone will have a more scientific method, but this one works for me.


Get a gummy stone, slide it up and down the edge about 5-10 times on the underfoot section only. Do a lap. If you still want less of an edge, repeat the process until you’re satisfied. If your detuning for rails, then do even more passes.

Appreciate the feed back. What’s the difference between using a diamond stone and a gummy stone?

One tip, similar to cooking steak (you can always cook more but you can't uncook), is that you can always detune more but you can't detune less. There's only so much edge your ski will ever have so take it a bit at time

Start with a file to break the corner of the edge on the underfoot section. Hold the file at a ~45 degree angle on the edge and do a few passes, maybe change the angle a little between passes to get a nice round over. Then get a hard gummy stone and make a bunch of passes to deburr your edge. You really cant overdo it with the gummy stone so just keep going to town until the edge is nice and smooth

No idea honestly. My tech was like “here take this with you, Incase you need more off the edges”… I needed a lot off so I’m glad he did.


Also the analogy with the steak is spot on. That’s why I said do a few passes and take a lap, rinse n repeat until your satisfied. It’s pretty neat to see the difference just a few passes makes in the amount of bite your edge has.

i just grind underfoot with a circular chainsaw file until it looks not so sharp, then do the lick test and see if you can split ur tongue on it. if you can't, ur good 2 go 👍🏼

Diamonds are used for fine tuning and sharpening generally, with different stones working from removing burrs all the way to polishing edges at a certain base or side angle. Gummys are more for clean up imo, removing rust, large burrs and imperfections. Gummys aren't enough to run a proper detune, you typically need a swix or some other type of file. I use a full angle grinder directly under foot to round my edges, then work up to the toe and heel piece with a file, then finely fade the detune with a gummy back into sharp edges on the remaining contacting edge of the ski. be sure to also detune tip and tail edges to prevent catches on butters and hookups when spinning on

file from the toe binding to the heel. just till the hard edge is rounded off. i use a chainsaw file but most files will work nice. also use a gummystone and some sandpaper for the last finish.
