100% do not waste your big sky days on these conditions. Yes it’s fun to get out there and finally shred, but it’s 380 acres out of 5,800. When big sky is filled in later in the season it is among the best inbounds skiing in the entire world.

Can't even believe anyone with a limited number of days would use any right now. It's still early season which always kinda sucks relative to any other part, ppl should know better.

I mean they have really good lifts.

Early season skiing fast lifts and groomers it seems like its well set up for.

We all want more but nowhere in North America has snow. (Other than Jay Peak where I skied fresh powder every run yesterday most runs were bottomless and I hit less rocks than a Feb day at Big Sky as Big Sky is rocky AF.)

I think most places are going to be groomer only this Xmas-NYE in North America which definitely sucks.

"WAS the best inbounds" until they systematically f'd it all up (depending on your POV) by:

1: Messing around with their ticket prices to "control crowds" aka force people into retail day tickets at extraordinary costs even compared to other like resorts. They will defend that with the 5800 acre #constantly.

2: Change the ticket so you can't ride the tram without #1. Last year they systematically allowed/didn't allow reservations to force you into #1 too.

3: Ban just about all uphill travel/hiking of any sort by selectively closing for safety 2000+ of those 5800 acres. Even with the 5800 acres there's "trails" that have not been skied in years and I think there's a few "trails" (lines really) that have been skied maybe 1-2x EVER in the past 25 years. Also I'd guess there's at least 1500 acres that requires a beacon/ave gear, I don't think you should count that in the 5800 since no normal person that shows up is likely to do that. Sunshine in Banff comes to mind having a ton of acreage that's ave gear too but they don't seem to advertise their acreage as like the #1 thing they have.

4: Allowing their ski patrol to lap the tram down the collier and skip the tram line and hike all those places they won't let you hike to do avalanche control, although when you watch them they are just skiing it up and down non-stop.

5: POLICE culture of ski patrol specifically singling out locals (Dirtbag ball comes to mind). I've never seen ski patrol tell someone to "F off" anywhere but here and I've seen it twice now, separate years, separate trips.

I'm not even a local and to me it's disgusting how they treat locals, many of which are super cool and will gladly, skill allowing, ski with you and hit all the cool spots all over the mountain.

Unfortunately I don't see any of the above changing. Big Sky was "discovered" around 2008. The world over it's become a magnet for an un-godly amount of money because it (was) so secluded and peaceful. I can't fault them for taking the money but the place is full log cabins the size that can fit the populations of small island nations, that are empty for 365 minus 14 days a year (14 days is a tax limit).

There's just not a ton of room for every day Joe traveler, locals, or aspiring pros. I doubt that changes until the money dries up, if it ever does.

Besides that, it's really really awesome!

If you're mad that not all 5800 acres are easily accessible, maybe those extra lines aren't there for you in the first place... The majority of people that really flaunt that it has 5800 acres probably will never touch more than whatever they can access via swifty and ramcharger but they don't care. It's marketing and it works. I've skied there almost every year of my life on vacation and then through college and I could never hope to touch the entire mountain, and in college I skied A-Z and headwaters (beacon territory) often. The place is just so big that you really have to make an outstanding effort to utilize every acre, but it gives you options every day which is great.

Sorry maybe it came off wrong, hiking is fine by me, I prefer something (tow rope or anything!) for sure, but my issue was I've seen terrain like A-Z closed BUT then there's some patrol with a few private individual groups that would go on them. There was no explanation offered whatsoever nor an answer to "how do I do that with you guys?". That seems to have been going on for a few years now.

Like you said the 5800 is marketing but when I've lead groups (30+ person ski clubs) where I wasn't on a first name basis with everyone where I would have let them know ahead of time, I would get complaints about it starting around day 4 when they ran out of terrain around well exactly that ramcharger and swift.

Headwater, lower A-Z has certainly been open and I've enjoyed both, headwater more since well, yea you can just ski into all those. That said I've never seen any of the far gullies in the bowl starting with 3 open nor the north snow field or castros, king,ace, dirtbag wall. One that I do see open occasionally is the wave but I've never quite figured out how to get to it on my own.

That makes sense to me. My roommate always hyped up the wave and I wish I could've skied the north snow field too. I think the crazy winds and weird snow cover contribute to a lot of those closures but I could be wrong. I miss skiing there often, shit.
