Where tf is park crew

I don't wanna be that guy who complains about the lack of park maintenance but as I was skiing Brighton today I couldn't help but be bummed on how shitty the terrain was getting. I get the joke that park crew doesn't really do their job and bums around but come on, I saw them out maintaining the park once out of the whole day being there and that was in the morning. There was this one rail that everyone was seshing but a bombhole at the landing that's been there all day had been making landing anything difficult for everyone. I get that the park doesn't need to be perfect or let alone decent all the time but they should at least leave out their shovels, rakes, and some wax for the people if they're not gonna do their job.

Could be doing any number of things like prepping the rest of the rail fleet or helping with another project. This time of year its probably not going to be a full sized crew either. Takeoffs are one thing but bombholes are basically impossible to fix by hand, the snow needs time to set up otherwise it will just be fucked within 20 minutes again.

Also if park crew left tools out for other people to do shit best case scenario your gonna get some noob turning everything into kicky ride-on takeoffs worst case theyre gonna make something downright dangerous that gets everything shut down

Man-made snow is almost impossible to keep packed, PC always has bad bomb holes because of this, the weak snow just gets destroyed.

All of the snow at brighton is man made right now, I'd say lay off OP, it's not even December.

Nah there’s plenty of unused snow in the trees right next to the park, I get it gets bombed out easily but no excuse to fix the park only once a day

Yea I guess but lips are fucked as well. Probably gonna start bringing my own gear which is no biggie but they def could help more

If a feature is getting heavily seshed on early season man made, getting a bombhole will happen. At that point it's almost impossible to fix. If it's getting insanely bad they can close if off and those some snow in it, pack it down and let it set for a little, but that will get pulled out pretty quick. And if getting sessioned really hard, likely very quickly.

With minimal features out early season and a lot of people it can be a little beat up, that's how she goes somees.

Leaving the shovels and rakes out is honestly a liability. And as far as wax, that's def a no go. A few places melt some wax on their tubes preseason with a torch. Otherwise nobody uses wax. It can sometimes help a feature slide better for a little, sometimes not at all, can can become even more sticky and start to pick up dirt etc(Ie waxing a skate ledge). For skating it doesn't matter if it's dirty, you're trying to put a smooth layer over the concrete so it's slides, that's different from a metal rail that's polished and also hit in skiing where there water involve from the snow.


I wasn't there, idk how many features/people there were, what the snow was like, how they usually maintain things. I've been to mountains before where the park was jacked and I found a rake and got a couple rails rideable, but that's pretty rare. That was just a lack of clearing snow or a really shitty takeoff kind of thing though. A big sesh on a rail will always beat it up. Would it have been worth it to close it for a while and fix it? Maybe but that can be a gable and is just a temporary patch.

Back in 06-07 We built a 6- by cat pass step down almost fully by hand. We were left enough snow for a take off to a box maybe. Shoveled snow from the trees for a day. Not idea. Random but brought back some memories of how some parks were built back then. Jump came out sick though.

Also as far as the scenario in this thread, that would take forever, that feature would be close for an hour, and first few people to hit it would probably get the bomb hole 1/4 as deep as it was and quickly progress from there. If there's a lot of people seshing in it would be real fast.

Pretty much in this spot it's either let it ride and let the people have it, or if it gets really bad close the feature for possibly the day. Some of mount snows early/pres season stuff was bomb hole central but it was still a lot of fun. Just gotta ride it early and no that later it will get dicey sometimes if there's a million people mobbing.


Even when the cat maintains the bomb holes, they need to do it early enough in the shift depending on the temps that it has time to set up in the cold before opening. Even then a lot of times you're tracking in the hole right up to the features the way you would rough sometime up to take glue. Then you push in some nice snow, maybe pack it in a little more, blade it and come around and till it. If the temps are good it'll setup pretty well but a ton of people seshing it, being manmade snow, and having marginal temps it's not surprising that it's blowing out fast.

Idk, I wasn't there, I don't know many people on park crew there, so this is more a generalized response about snow and maintenance/grooming.

A lot of places do opening rake = Set up fences signs, check features rake as needed if cat left anything.

Mid day rake = clean up lips throw some snow in bomb holes if possible. If spring salt features.

Closing rake = roll fences, move signs, fix rail take offs, leave evwrything else for the cat pretty much.

In between can be working on new features at the shop, repairing old ones, cutting play for skirting, painting, logos, wire brush/flap disc. Etc.

A lot of mtns run mininaml staff in the summer and some start rail work pretty late with minimal crew or decide to build new features in the fall.

Not seeing the crew on the hill doesn't mean they aren't working. It totally could, but not a given.

Also sometimes you could miss the mid day rake going down. Also, sometimes with man made early season and lots of heavy traffic it could be blown out again in minutes even after a good rake.

Mt snow pay your age day used to be hilarious. Noteo was borderline unrideable after like 11. Luckily plenty of parks and gulch inferno prospector were always more chill. If you feel like 3 people would hit you or jump over you. Fun to tranny find on smaller features with huge bomb holes and spin out.

Tell that to Woodward PC, I've seen them out there on multiple occasions rubbing on skate wax by hand. But only after people were constantly complaining about how sticky their rails are. I just bring my own Canola oil now.

Hmmm. Idk then. I know they're one of the parks that melts wax on the tubes preseason but i didn't know they waxed anything beyond that.

I've always found thag if you wire wheel the shit off and flap it to full grease mode with a 120 and have all the grooves out, don't paint it or loght spray, tower tubes slide great.

Usually sticky ones I've run into had old paint or bullshit stuck on still.

Idk copper has a sick park though. I've never seen the need for it places I've worked.

Have used silicon spray for boxes at a few places though.

There was a dude at tline(not employee) that was rubbing some sort of wax on the features to make them slide faster for a few min maybe but then all the dirt would cake to it and itd get stickier.

Usually just throwing some snow on a box or rail if its hot out to keep it wet works fine.

I'm wondering if some peoples skis just weren't detuned at all.

I was at an event at Woodward PC an the rails were sticky as, we suggested a greaser spray but the opted from it to be more environment friendly therefore the use a rub on wax.

lmao for fuck's sake that's ridiculous. A ski resort, which operates many ski lifts and uses a buttload of electricity, is worried about the environmental reprecussions of rubbing their rails with grease

At my tiny home hill the skiers build everything there's no crew older guys teach the younger crowd how it works and what to do and not to do to keep everything functional and safe but I doubt that would work at a well known place with lots of random people rolling through and large features everywhere.
