Far-right Republicans are using the imaginary threat of CRT in public schools to gain access to school boards and are now implementing "pledges" to force compliance, restrict educational material under the threat of legal action to the extent of banning books and threatening teachers.

My school did. Not all the classrooms had flags though so they would broadcast a digital flag and recording into each classroom. Whole thing was super wack but I guess it was state law or something. Forced patriotism is fricken weird.

The funny thing is the Pledge of Allegiance started in 1892 as a marketing gimmick by a guy that sold flags.

If you're born into systemic poverty, it is hard to leave that, even with some of the affirmative action type help. The amount of people who are born into those shitty situations that date back hundreds of years is far higher than the number of people who benefit from affirmative action.

While I agree that a lot of the people against CRT don’t understand it, the people for it, even more so don’t understand what it really is. Which is by design, critical theory in general is a win at all cost ideology that doesn’t play by the same rules as any normal person seeking truth has to adhere to.
A good way to begin to understand critical theory is that it seeks to liberate society from liberalism. Critical RACE theory is basically race Marxism. It views race as the central construct of all inequality, and doesn’t have to consider other factors. Because truth isn’t it’s goal, power, and adhering to their utopian vision is what concerned about.

Bro there are people going to college and competing in the job market today whose grandparents were legally not allowed into the same schools as whites or were not educated at all. You learn almost everything from your parents and when their education is severely underfunded that disadvantage is passed down through generations. Also consider redlining, destruction of minority families through discriminatory policing, the way schools are funded disproportionately through property taxes, etc.

The only one of those videos I had any problem with was the third one and that's just because I think it's wrong to put kids on the spot like that. You can talk about those issues without forcing kids to show the rest of the class how advantaged/disadvantaged they are. The last video was taken out of context and I don't even understand what was wrong with the first two
I went to a large inner city public high school, went to public university, and private grad school. Everything I learned about the US in school in areas like social studies basically in some context painted the US in a very negative light, focusing almost entirely on the repression of minorities, with specific attention emphasized around slavery and the treatment of native Americans. We watched the entire Roots series in 7th grade while learning about slavery. I don't recall anything patriotic or patriotism ever being mentioned positively. Standing for the pledge, back when it even happened elementary school, was qualified with options to stay seated, remain silent, or to turn away from the flag.
I have lived abroad and traveled to almost 30 countries, and it astounds me when Americans refer to the US as patriotic or xenophobic or any of that. Most (if not all) countries are far, far prouder of themselves and their history than is the US. Countries like Mexico or Turkey (as random examples - Catholic and Islamic) are overtly zealously patriotic, and it is roundly considered a positive thing in those places.
In fact, the US is the only country I know of that has a whole culture devoted to hating itself, and whose society is so completely fractured and confused about its own identity. The US is for sure the only place I've been where half of the majority ethnicity is literally ashamed of its own current iteration to the point it is destroying the very things that even give it a voice. It's absolutely fucking wild, and I would guess it is the first time in the history of the planet that something like this has taken place.

My problem with this is the "honest, patriotic education" part, to me that screams to ignore the bad shit since I know a lot of people that say "if you don't like it then leave" anytime you criticize the US. Should just be an honest education. I don't think we need to delve into every dark part of our history for 1st graders, but high school students should get a good understanding of it, my high school left a lot to be desired when it came to American involvements in other countries and even post slavery America. I do believe that we need to take a look at topics with an understanding of what were norms for the time, but that also doesn't mean we shouldn't look at how it affected the suppressed. I am also not saying we should only look at negatives, if taught well we should be able to see our improvements throughout history and still have a sense of patriotism.

I think public education should produce critical thinkers and that it has failed at that for a while. We see more and more students protesting and taking action because they get historical information/ alternative perspectives through twitter or tik tok or whatever. I'd much rather our curriculum paint an honest view of America's wrongs rather than rely on randos on twitter with their own biases. I don't think that its extreme at all to say that race is a central theme in America's history and its naive to think that it hasn't shaped our society today.

This is something concerning me as well. One positive thing about Trump initially was that he burned down the Bush era NeoCon party. This of course left an ideological power vacuum that was filled by Trump's own personality. Now that Trump is more or less out of the picture, the hard line Republicans are playing off the more extreme leftists politics to move the party back to the NeoCon fold which is not good at all.
In any case, its good the history classes are moving to a more contextual education instead of the regurgitate dates on a scantron bullshit. Knowledge is facts but context is wisdom and history gives context to the present.
Also ironically we only nuked Hiroshima because we were running out of cities that were not already levelled by firebombing. The Japanese government didnt care it was getting levelled and civilians were dying and they were prepared to allow every civilian to die in an invasion to bleed the USA into a more favorable surrender. It was actually the threat of the USSR invading that made the Japanese realize the game was up so they used the nukes to save face and surrender to the USA and not become a communist state. Needless to say the agreement worked out well for them but my point is history is far more nuanced than spraying dates onto a multiple choice.

Critical race theory comes from the Frankfut school's critical theory. Figure out the rest for yourselves. Remember, critical theory can be used by anyone to benefit their in-group for almost anything.
