Worst Trend in Freeskiing

Has anyone noticed that the skis people use today are so much smaller than the skis that were used when freestyle was just becoming a thing. I watched Happy Dayz not too long ago, I also watched a Shane McConkey documentary. In both of these films I never failed to notice how tall their skis were compared to them. Some skis had to be almost a foot taller than their riders.

Why do you think in this era of skiing have skis actually become shorter and not bigger, or even stay the same? Seems weird that they were throwing down some crazy shit while riding 7ft long 2*4s, when some skiers today use skis up to their nose just to slide a flat rail.

Personally, I think freestyle should have never trended towards short skis.

They are getting lighter because they are getting shorter and thinner. New materials are one of the causes for this and also provide different characteristics as far as flexibility, dampness, strength, and weight distribution go. These allow ski designers to optimize different parts and shapes to ensure the skis can add enough support for stable skiing, but also be smaller and lighter weight for less work on the skier.

Most skis have gone through extensive testing and develolpment and companies have years of market performance data to go off of. If longer skis were better, they would still be very long. But they aren't.

Worst trend gotta be trying to be “core”. Like just fucking wear what you actually like and ride skis that you actually enjoy. Stop buying shit just because it’s “cool”. It makes you look like you don’t actually care about skiing and that you just like the Idea of it and want it to be your fake personality. I cant tell you how many skiers I’ve met who really don’t care about or enjoy skiing that much who do it just so that they can say they ski, it’s ridiculous

I have watched happy dayz a billion times and I can guarantee none of their skis are much longer than 190, same probably goes with shane.

they look longer cause they're directional, there is way more ski in front of the boot. I grew up skiing in this era and we def weren't on 200s

There are purpose built edgeless skis now, I doubt that’s got something to do with the length but easier to slide on concrete

This isn't really related but I'm arguably the worst park rider at my mountain. But I enjoy skiing more then anyone there. I'll genuinely have a smile on my face when skiing and my friends will shit on my for not being able to kfed yet

The skis in happy days are 181 at the max (salomon 1080s) rossi scratch's were 180 i believe, troublemakers were 176 max maybe? maybe they made a 180-185 I don't remember.

OP, I've said this before, but y'all worry way too much about how your skis make you look, the best skiers in the world make their skis look good regardless of size.

its the math involved in ski design theory. With the addition of sidecut, camber and rocker, those 3 things can combine and give a skier the same effective edge as a 210 straight ski, while being significantly lighter and significantly more agile, while maintaining the same stability. theres way more to ski design theory (good ski design theory, anyway) than meets the eye.

The lenght people are skiing just isn’t about look nor is it about following trends. It's about technicality and optimizing how the skis perform.

even though you were wrong about the skis being longer, you do kind of have a point the the tips of the skis were in fact way longer. Which is one of the main reasons I also advocate for longer skis.

Think about it: as skis have become less directional, the tips have gotten much shorter but the ski has stayed the same length. But since you ski mostly on the tips of your skis, park skis now feel much shorter, even though they aren't. Which is why I don't think it's silly to ask for a park ski over 190. I want a symmetrical shape, but I still want a lot of ski to ski on. I'm also 188 cm tall.

Sometimes if feels like there is this made up limit for ski length and if you ask for anything over 190 it's viewed as ABSURD. Yes, I understand that a 210 straight ski or super G ski is hard to ski. But that's irrelevant when what I'm asking for is a 200cm vishnu wet, which is very rockered, symmetrical, and soft. We have no idea what that ski would be like and I think it would be dope.

vishnus aren't very "floppy" in my experience, very very soft yes, but floppy is a word I would use to describe skis like Blends (which I have also owned)

Also keep in mind 200 is only 4 inches longer than the current model, it's not some crazy difference like it sounds

Ask your girlfriend how much difference 4” makes.

The armada alpha 1 I think was definition of floppy. And that ski was all tip and tail. Not much effective edge for the length...

Skis used to be longer all around because they were narrower. My first “adult” ski was the Salomon x scream I got when I was 14 in a 187. My dad skied 205s prior to that it was a hard sell for any ski shop to convince real skiers to buy a pair of skis under 200cm for like a solid decade. It just happened slowly and then you get a guy like Eric Pollard putting out the first Elizabeth in a 172 only just because he was trying to mimic the short and wide characteristics of a snowboard. Also Eric is not a very large human I could never ride a 172 but you get the idea. The first bacon was just a longer Elizabeth because people bitched about it enough I assume.
