JLejit snowed once and then there was like a light flurry and that was it. its been so warm here. Mammoth kept all its snow but they havent gotten shit since end of October either
Gasboxy123there's something bugging about this fall
betzWe are already at 193% snowfall average for the year, maybe nature just needs a nap after blowing its load in october.
betzGFS model pleaseeeee
(Dec 4th - 7th)
we def not gonna see anything till December unfortunately
But am hopeful for snow around Dec 7th... that's what Bryan allegretto said
twonsarelliWhere are you guys shredding this winter?
twonsarelliRight on. Kirkwood on pow days is just the best. I’ve skied practically nips deep there and it was bananas!
theabortionatorGot an 8.5 foot storm 2 or 3 years ago. Only like 40 cars got in before the pass shut again.
Shit was deep af. Almost scary if you fell. Worth getting stuck a couple hours to leave waiting for pass to open.
PimpChimpinDon’t wanna turn everything into a global warming thread but we are definitely seeing global warming in action this year 🤷♂️🤷♂️
theabortionatorWe need some snow in WA too. Been on the almost maybe opening for a while now. Cant skate here in the winter so let the mtns open please!!!
Also on days where whether is decent you can def skste but i live an hour from nearest park and its trash.

betzHas it snowed and all the rain washed it away or has it literally just been raining?
Hmm does it rain more on the mountains there vs Tahoe or about the same? I would think Tahoe more but I know there's not as much elevation on the mtns there.

Boy do I have the news for you!

cyphersbelieve it when i see it
THE-Albino*Also big rip for all of us Sierra at tahoe boys never thought I'd have a season where I couldn't go there. Literally skied there since 2007/8ish. Driving through there was crazy forsure with the highway somewhat affected but sierra absolutely scorched.
BradFiAusNzCoCaYou must be new to Tahoe. Winter doesn’t start there until January 1.

I took this photo a year ago today :(
Our winters start late, but there's usually at least a little bit by Thanksgiving. This heat has been brutal for snowmaking. Apart from a little bit of north-aspect snow about 8000 feet, our AR event a few weeks ago has completely melted. Let's hope December has some weather in store for us
twonsarelliThat is quite a contrast! Which lift were you on when you took this?

DingoSeanI've learned to not expect consistent snow till mid-december at the earliest for Tahoe.
betzayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
lezz goooooo
twonsarellii thought we'd never see it. any leads on an actual open date?
betzNope, but the clues we have are...
Stay warm and dry from now until the 6th
Small storm (
twonsarelliyeahhh. it's a rough one, let me tell ya
betzNope, but the clues we have are...
Stay warm and dry from now until the 6th
Small storm around the 6th bringing colder & active pattern
Cold weather 7th - 8th good for snowmaking
Stronger, colder storm coming 9th-10th
11th & on, very cold active pattern for forseeable future.
My bet is the big resorts opening the 10th or 11th, and any other resort to be open by the 18th.
Boreal is already open cus they are snow blowing maniacs

BradFiAusNzCoCaDon’t they have some European snow making room/system that costs a ton and can create snow at higher temps?
BrandoComandoYour comment made me do some research into this. You're totally right. They have a state-of-the-art system from a brand called TechnoAlpin. It uses refrigerant in the guns to chill the water. Here's a good article from when it was installed a few years ago
https://freeskier.com/stories/woodward-tahoe-can-now-make-snow-at-any-temperature-sparking-environmental-debate
I'm sure their smaller footprint and large reservoir are a big help too. Less terrain and more water means they can create runs faster than the bigger hills in town

betzAhh, don't be such a downer. Way I see it, when miami beach goes underwater and rich people start flipping their shit, that their beachfront properties all become worthless, all of a sudden we get all the funding in the world to fight climate change, big breakthrough comes thru a la futurama dropping enourmous ice cube in the ocean, and we reverse climate change and everyone lives happily ever after.
Ok but seriously I'm actually somewhat qualified on this subject, we are going in the right direction as of now, and it's definitely not physically impossible to reverse climate change. We are getting better over the years, even if it's two steps forward and one step back, it's still progress. I trust in our scientists and engineers, we may fuck over several areas of the earth along the way but we are a long long loooong ways away from Earth turning into mars. Earth turns into a hot* dead rock on the conditions that we actually lose too much CO2, from the increased heat of the sun (the sun gets bigger as it dies) breaking down the CO2 and burning up the ozone layer. Then plants can't produce oxygen and everything dies. But yeah that shouldn't happen until the sun starts to die around a billion years from now.
In any case, Tahoe not getting snow this time of year is actually pretty normal, we are due for some big storms, yes climate change has shifted our ski seasons (march is becoming the new February) but they are far from gone. Everything is a balance, if it's extra hot here, well it's extra cold in the north and the east, and if it's warm there it's cold here. that's why it's climate change more accurately than global warming.
