I would just cut a piece to go sll the way aceoss. If you 45 the ends of the 2x4 where it barely fits thing will be bomb proof before you even sink a screw into it. Helps to tske a minute and get a really good fit so it's snug. Better even if you have to smash it into place. Then that thing will survive the Yellowstone erruption
