Part of the reason why things like skateboarding and corking on skis are so cool is bc you cant be a complete idiot if you want to participate.

For example, in order to be able to adjust your spinning and corking dynamics mid-air you need to have a rudimentary understanding of angular momentum, among other things.

i remember in 2007 or 2008 when the discovery channel seemed to take a big interested in the freeskiing revolution and even sponsored the field productions movie get lucky or something. They did some shows with msp on the film claim i think as well

I always wondered why discovery would be so interested in skiing.

I felt smart when we did rotations of 90 and I knew everything up to a billion because of future spins. Then the next day we did other math and I felt stupid again.

Building jumps is basically one big math equation. Gotta predict the speed of entry, size and angle of the lip and how far and what angle you require for a safe landing. Hint: its all projectiles

Ya kinda😂I mean like when my teacher is like what 2160/ 360 then ya. Or anything with 90,180, or 360 i can divide it or multiply it cuz or skiing, like dub 10 has 3 rotations duh but that kinda translate

No, CAT drivers follow plans and instructions. They are experts in driving cats, not as much the math involved in building a jump by eye, in the middle of the night.

yeah. Its actually alot of fun to work out projectile motions. Easy as cake but still fun. The only headache parts would be adjusting for friction(dolan) and air resistance.

actually im pretty damn sure they calculate all the jump parameters before building. On kiddy jumps you could just eyeball it but on any jump over 20 feet you would have to be an idiot to not take a minute to work out the dimensions of the jump you are building. Its so much easier to take a few measurements and build to spec than trying to brute force a bitch into completion.

and on a 50 + footer? If you didnt work out the dimensions beforehand, you would be begging for a lawsuit.

projectile motion is about as complicated as jacking off. Its easy and there really is no reason not to do it.

have you ever had someone claim that just sliding a rail and then spinning a front 2 out should count as a 'pretzel?' this annoys me to no end. i have a friend that isn't very good at park skiing and always claims 'i did a sick pretzel 2 out' under those conditions... it pains me

i fiercely MAINTAIN that you can only claim a pretzel spin of any kind if you rotated a minimum of 180 degrees prior to the 'pretzel' rotation. i'm sure it is obvious what i mean but as an example:

front swap, front 2, that's fine, call it a pretzel.
switch lip, back 2, not fine. don't you dare

yea pretty much this, I think (in my not official or informed opinion) that stuff involving degrees of rotation like geometry or maybe trigonometry and stuff involving spatial reasoning and problem solving yes, but algebra calc and other higher level forms of math not really. Same thing as @theabortionator did geo in hs was pretty easy going back to algebra it was fucking terrible, same with pre calc in college.

Never did one on skis. Could do cork 7s and 9s on a tramp pretty easily tho.

also, to the guys in this thread who think math is hard. Just give it time. You cant just read a math equation and expect to puke out the answer in 2 seconds. You gotta look at math as a puzzle. Try to break it down and figure out what is actually going on, piece by piece.

I was adhd in school and always got extra time. If i wasnt given extra time i would do terrible on tests. But with enough time i could do anything.

im saying this because you should pace yourself with math and accept it may take you alot of time to solve equations etc.

also, you have to learn it until it clicks. If it doesnt click then you havent learned it. You cant just memorize and regurgitate like you can in english or history.

If you dont fully understand the individual pieces you have to put together on math problems, then its like building a bridge out of rotten wood. The bitch is going to collapse. you have to make sure you fully understand the stuff you learned before. It builds on itself.

This is true. Math is just assembling individual components in certain orders and understanding their relationships. There's a lot of types of components and relationships and it takes a lot of practice to start to understand them. Try to notice the patterns in math, it helps to learn it. Yes it's hard, but it's useful.

this is all facts. Though some people are more predisposed to understanding it, math is largely effort based where you have to want to understand why it works. There's always a reason or structure but it can be hard to see.

saying skiers need to know physics to be able to pretzel and cork and stuff is bullshit though hahah that's more body/spatial awareness. You can know theoretically how to backflip/cork but it is wayyy different in practice

Planning/ building a good jump its great to have that projectile motion to calculate speeds and shit tho

I think if i could say something to ppl who think they will never understand math, i would say to not feel terrible even if it takes you 4 hours of thinking about some little part of a math concept that other ppl in the class figured out in 4 seconds.

i think the reason some ppl are rockstars in math from birth and other ppl have trouble is not all because some ppl are so much smarter than others. That may be part of it but another part of it is just that ppls brains are wired differently, and some peoples minds are wired from birth in a way that math concepts are very familiar to them so they learn it easily, while others minds are wired such that math concepts are very foreign. Dont feel discouraged or disheartened just because it takes you a very long time to build the mental connections needed to solve math problems.

the only ppl who have trouble with math who deserve to be shit on are those who think math isnt important. Girls for example, kek

Fuck proofs in geometry, there are so many more useful things they could be teaching in geometry like more complicated Trig. I took geometry freshman year of HS and now I'm 2nd year engineering student and I haven't used proofs in a math class since
