Global Warming has Decimated Winters

It's 2042, and global warming has decimated winters on Earth. The few number of remaining snow patches and glaciers are literred with old park rats who refused to give up because, hey, skiing on dry surfaces (inspired by zootspace ix) is the latest trend.

SpaceX announces that it will partner with Vail Resorts to create the Epic Europa Express, an "affordable" ride to Saturn's icy moon. There exists a selection of frigid resorts perfect for reminding customers of skiing the blustery hills of Minnesota or New York. Low gravity has created whole new styles of skiing, such as spinning 6930 tweaked safeties off cannon rails and triple griselda flips done by the common (rich) 12 year old. Lifties have to pay to work there.

What's more, one Saturn year is 29 Earth years, meaning winter lasts at least 7 years. But that's actually irrelevant because Europa is so far from the sun that it is always a desolate windblown winter wonder-wasteland like Eldora and the season is eternal. Ski movies now have main parts featuring snowmobiling in spacesuits out to Europa's most epic couloirs and cliffs. Many mysteriously disappear...
Skiing abides.

Saying “omg it hasn’t snowed yet, it must be global warming” is literally no different that saying “wow,it snowed in July, global warming must NOT exist.” How does that sound any different? It’s a ridiculous argument. There are good years and bad years, always have been. I’m not saying global warming isn’t real, it’s just not causing such abrupt changes.

Uhhhhhhhh. this aint it chief, not tryna be a dick but maybe research a bit before makin a statement like that. yea you got it that there are good years and bad years. but "bad years" are happening far more frequently. average temps for both winter and summer are rising in certain areas but in some temps are abnormally low (not good for some areas) which is the affectation of climate change caused by global warming. Abrupt changes are happening. look at these if you are interested in learning a bit more about how climate change is affecting us:

There are lots of valid complaints about global warming. Valid.

I just wish those complaints were accompanied by real solutions, they almost never are. "Do more" is not a solution. Real solutions are hard to come by, electric cars just aren't enough to offset 150 million births per year without plentiful renewable electricity.

Jokes aside it's great what they're doing and might help shift some ski companies to be more responsible, but in the scope of things it feels pretty useless.

Have you ever seen how electric cars are made? Probably not cause they arent as green as they say. Just the amount of lithium we need to build one battery... And then where does the electricity come from? Electric cars are the biggest joke on earth right now. Hydrogen- methanol cars would be way better for the climate but hey the government already invested huge amounts of money in building up the electric car sector, so they can't return and say oops we did a mistake...

Here's a thought experiment:

Round up every SUV owner in the US and bury their cars, forbid them to drive anything. In ONE year we will be right back in the same place after those 150m global births. 30% of carbon comes from the transportation industry (the entire industry, actual percentage depends on your source), this drastic experiment wouldn't affect the other 70% at all.

This is what you kids are up against and the media complaint hype is stealing your voice, keeping us powerless, even keeping us from pondering the situation critically. It's important that we all hear the complaint they are helping in that sense, but then what? The next time some uber wealthy talking head insists we "do more" you should throw tomatoes at them.

still better than gas because eventually the grid will be renewable energy. as far as getting lithium from the earth…i think battery technology will move away from lithium to more plentiful resources

This is a great and very important study but you are misrepresenting it. That statistic includes end use of the product (90% of that 71%), which includes all of us buying utilities to heat our houses and gas to run our cars, among other things.

From the study:

"Direct operational emissions (Scope 16) and
emissions from the use of sold products (Scope 3:
Category 11) are attributed to the extraction and
production of oil, gas, and coal. Scope 1 emissions
arise from the self-consumption of fuel, flaring, and
venting or fugitive releases of methane.

Scope 3 emissions account for 90% of total
company emissions and result from the downstream
combustion of coal, oil, and gas for energy purposes.
A small fraction of fossil fuel production is used in
non-energy applications which sequester carbon."

I don't want to distract from the importance of the study however, BP went to great lengths to popularize the "personal carob footprint" to the tune of a $250m advertising campaign to put the blame entirely on consumers. (source: https://mashable.com/feature/carbon-footprint-pr-campaign-sham) Nah, we still need to go after the 100 companies (mostly oil companies, unsurprisingly) but It isn't as simple as it's 71% them and we don't really need to change our own personal lifestyles. It's an all-hands-on deck global effort.

Electric cars are still less bad in a lifetime case as land-based power
tends to be far more efficient and also frequently is at least a mix of
fossil fuels and renewables. They are more GHG intensive for production
but more efficient afterwards. No their not quite a silver bullet but
calling them a joke just isn't accurate. I can dig up the lifecycle analysis study if you want.

Methanol fuel cells turn CH3OH into H20 and CO2... so it still emits greenhouse gases (albeit less so than ICE bc its more efficient). You can't really get around this unless you synthesize methanol but its more expensive and then of course it matters what the energy source you synthesize them with is.

Methanol fuel cells could be a prominent part of a greener future where their high energy density could make fields like air travel and long distance shipping, which are far less "green" feasible due to the weight of batteries, a possibility. As far as which is better, methanol fuel cell cars or electric cars I'd be interested in a lifetime emissions study bc it may very well be a crapshoot or slightly favoring methanol depending on where you live and its energy grid. As far as the government refusing new technology I have serious doubts, at least in the US we are really leaving the heavy lifting for "green" cars to the private industry with some grants and consumer credits here and there.

Western / first world society has a moral obligation to lobby for change. All revolutions were started by the masses of society pleading for change. If everybody does their part in reducing their carbon footprint and uses their ability to vote and protest changes, slowly things can improve. I'm really hope this is the future we can look forward to.

Princeton biologist here to remind everybody that while global warming is real, we can easily offset it if we want to.

we could start another ice age in 100 yrs if we wanted to.

eventually the sun will get hotter no matter what and at that point we will be forced to act to lower the earths temperature.

so to think that we should only use carbon capture/ocean mineralization/fertilizing down the road but we should only do half measures like teslas right now is fucking stupid. the easiest way to keep earth cool is to dump minerals into the oceans.

I was always fascinated by olympus mons. Like its possible that in earths past there was a mountain as high as olympus mons or higher.



if you climbed to the top of a 70,000 ft mountain on earth, the surrounding glaciers would probably be a mile thick, and if you got to the top and looked upwards the sky would be almost black. You would basically be in outer space.

temperature would probably be about -100 deg too.

Thats where the outrage is, the fact that we can literally halt and offset this shit anytime we want but boomer government/FF conglomerates dont give a fuck about the future cuz they only got about 10-20 years left alive
