If you could move to any mountain

RyanWhitdogWithin the last couple of years, many of the jobs within my industry have moved to fully remote opportunities. It is likely I will not be in this situation, but made me curious if I or you were in this situation, and were looking to move to any mountain/town in the US, which you would choose and why?


I have always been skiing just on the East coast. But I still try to ride everyday and get around 60+ days, which is basically our whole season. I’ve skied a few mountains out west, but when I think about if I could move and still work anywhere, where would I go? Where could I live in a decent area, with awesome skiing and longer seasons than my east coast hill? The amount of options to an East coaster like me seem so overwhelming I wouldn’t know where to start looking. Any resort towns you would rule out simply due to overcrowding at some of the mountains?

Curious as to everyone’s choice if they were in a situation like this! What would yours be and why?

IsaacNW82Yooo whats up I work remote and lived East and moved to New Mexico. There is a huge amount of awesome mountains in the west from Mt Baker in Washington to Taos in New Mexico. Plenty of cool stuff in Colorado and Utah but don't just immediately move there without considering all the other dope states around them. I personally think Mt Baker, Taos, Jackson/Targhee area, and SLC area would be where I'd consider if I didn't already move to Taos. Only skied Oregon one day and never been to Montana so I don't have an opinion on those.

I don't recommend Denver, Boulder anything like that. It's West Kansas.

Mt. Baker is actually one of the places wanted to visit, spend time at, etc. to consider as a place to go. So I appreciate the input confirming some thoughts there. I’ve skied Jackson as well, little tough to live in that surrounding area it seems tho no?


I was able to ski a week at Taos in 2018 and was super stoked on it. I loved it there. Family friends of ours just got married and out there as well. Hoping you all have a good season appreciate the feedback.

IsaacNW82Thanks Man! Yea for Jackson I think you kinda have to live on the Idaho side, and even then might be too expensive. But definitely pursue the work from home thing. It opens up a lot of possibilities.

One other thing to consider is what you like to do in the summer. And some ski-oriented cities in the Rockies might get a whole lot hotter than you'd guess (looking at you, SLC)

IsaacNW82Vermont life is pretty sick man. I lived on and off at Sugarbush throughout college and at the start of the pandemic working from home. The skiing isn't out west but Sugarbush, Stowe, MRG and Jay Peak have some nasty terrain and Sugarbush and Killington parks are sick, and have long seasons. Plus the biking in Vermont is really amazing, both trail and DH, and VT has the best beer in the world. You might be able to score a cheap condo at Bolton or live in Waterbury. The Mad River Valley is expensive and thus many young people don't live there but I did love it. Overall if you wanted to live slopeside I'd actually guess it would be cheaper out East than out West

BigPurpleSkiSuitThe cottonwoods would be GOAT if they got off of Ikon, but Snowbird never will now. Realistically, it might be the play to move to a 'smaller' mountain, i.e. not on Ikon. Honestly the play might be Grand Targhee at this point since they are only on mountain collective and have banger snow and terrain from what I hear.

I don't think the Icon is your enemy I think its that every expert skier who lives in Utah sort of 'has' to buy a pass to AltaBird and can't go somewhere quieter to avoid the hordes even if they want to.

Someone has already called me out for being old AF and I haven't posted in a while when I was a kid lines on the East coast were WAY worse than they are now but I remember 3 Utah trips Xmas break (too risky to go elsewhere) and it was fresh snow every day and minimal crowds. People used to be way bigger alcoholics the whole mormon thing really kept people away and kept the cottonwoods under the radar. My dad used to also say how much cheaper it was than if we went to Vail or some other shit.

Get some amazing breakfast of croissants and expresso in some little bakery, skiing all day, having some beers APRES and walking back to my place.. One day i will realize this dream.

PeppermillRenoPretty much everywhere good doubled/tripled in the last 5 years in terms of property. Somehow they still have people renting and bumming around everywhere we don't have robots bumping lifts yet.

Canada is cheap if you don't have millions try and marry a Canadian. There is probably nowhere cheaper than Trail BC to live in North America and I don't think theres a better lift serviced mountain that holds snow as well as Red. Alberta and Inner BC are the best. My answer would actually be Sandpoint ID simply for proximity to the goods in Canada along with good stuff stateside. IDK why Schweitzer replaced the lifts so stupidly they just don't want to let you ride one top to bottom. on both sides of it. Would be a way better mountain if you could lap one lift top to bottom on each side.

Aspen if I had a true blank check. The Alps get shit hit or miss snow and pretty much everything good there is like Jackson Hole and super crowded with loooooooooong ass tram waits.

Don't get as much snow. Snowbasin. Or go north to Pow Mow.

Nothings a long drive relatively speaking in UT. If you go the PC way you don't even need a rental car the uber from the airport isn't bad and they have free buses. You need a rental car for Alta/Snowbird and if theres fresh snow need 4WD.

4WD rentals this winter gonna be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. My dad snowbirds in Vegas I have a 2 week SUV rental out of the other Phoenix airport not Sky Harbor since my work is kinda flexible so I'll have him scoop me from Sky Harbor and get a hotel then drive me across Phoenix. Long drive. Alamo is cool when you drop shit off at a different airport tho especially a more expensive one I won't lose money if I fly home from Salt Lake or Spokane should that go off.

oldmanskiLots of good replies in this thread. @TreyDudski meant to say Driggs Idaho. That valley is definitely growing quickly and prices are starting to get into the insane amounts. My choice……. Inkom, Idaho. It’s a little town outside of Pocatello. It sits right below one of the best mountains around, Pebble Creek. You are a 10 min drive from the ski hill. Targhee/Jackson is 2.5 hour drive, Utah resorts are 2 hour drive, Sun Valley is a 3 hour drive. But honestly, if Pebble has decent snow, you won’t need to go anywhere else. Cost of living is still affordable for the most part, and the people are pretty good too.
And welcome to the site, stick around, you will enjoy it. There are some good people on here.
