hot take im sorry but syndicate gotta be the most lame looking gear ive ever seen and i feel like no ones really mentioned it, those cargo pants look like some alibaba drop shipped oem rigs with some suspect branding on them (not to mention they only go up to xl). and those jackets look like something dope snow or montec would release for a rich texan on his yearly aspen trip. aside from the outerwear they picked up a dude who looks back at the camera after a daffy butter and i feel that kinda speaks for itself

feel free to tell me im wrong but i had to get this one out

I guess i dont have any experience with Montec but Flylow gear is usually high quality and looks good IMO. The baker bibs are some of the sickest looking bibs out there and also function super well as a touring pant. Maybe im just a fanboy but I wouldnt call flylow influencer gear

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure Flylow is founded by skiers and gives back to community. They don't have much instagram fame or anything either. Not saying they are "core" or anything, but they aren't like Monte or Dope.

I have the baker bibs and I totally agree. My favorite pant I have ever owned.

I personally feel like it’s good quality gear and I think you would feel the same if you used it. I agree that it looks like most other outerwear that is around but the material quality and water proofing is bomber. I will say it’s def overpriced but it’s quality is up there with Patagonia and Arc’teryx

I can definitely see how you might get that impression since a ton of skiers (often seems like the entire FWQ field) wear Flylow and/or get a deal on it in exchange for tagging them in their posts.

That said, and maybe I just don't know enough about Montec, but Flylow does way more to support the Newschoolers (and TGR-ers, and generally very committed) skiers of the world than Montec.

Dan Abrams (founder of Flylow) views their sponsorship program mostly as a jumping-off point for the up-and-coming rad skiers; Flylow sponsors them while they're trying to make a name for themselves, and then he's genuinely psyched when they get signed to some way bigger company later on (Isaac Freeland is a great example of this). IMO, the demographics and goals of the two brands are wildly different.

And while Flylow's stuff is much more expensive than Montec, I still think they fill a sweet spot in the market in terms of making high-end stuff that's generally burlier and not quite as expensive as Patagonia, Arc, high-end TNF, Norrona, etc. when you're comparing equivalent products.

Didn't intend to go into a mini rant, but Flylow does a lot more for the ski industry than Montec.

I don't know much about Syndicate but I can chime in with my personal thoughts on Montec haha. I've been sponsored by Montec for the last 3 seasons. And honestly, I get where people are coming from with their hate or dislike towards the brand. Their Instagram content is mostly cringey influencer-style stuff and most of their content and a lot of their outerwear (over-the-top patterns, or matching suits) make me a little furious haha. But that clearly works for them and they've been super successful with what they've started. Ridestore, encompassing Dope and Montec is also extremely new, Montec even more so, and I hope that after a few more years under their belt of operations, they'll find their footing a bit more and pivot to be more freeski-driven and supportive. I'll also mention, they are a Euro (Swedish) brand and newschoolers is not exactly the demographic or type of skier they're looking for.
All that being said, (and I'm being honest because they don't pay me and I know nobody from the brand is looking at this thread haha), I love my Montec stuff. I don't love the fit of the pants or bibs but they're really high quality while maintaining lightweight and waterproofing especially for the price. So unless it's a specific kind of day or bc mission, I wear my own baggier bibs. The jackets, especially the Doom and Fenix are fckn rad though. Warm n cozy, good breathability, pretty bomber, great cut/length/shape, big fan of the kangaroo pocket in daily use, and I think they personally look sick. As long as you stick to solid colours and not matching pants, as I said I don't love the suit-style look that every city gal and their sugar daddy on vacation seem to be going for. But that's fine haha. I love my stuff, the people I've been dealing with behind Montec the last few yrs are actually great guys and gals and super accommodating and generous. But to each their own eh! :)

To be fair harlaut pants are mostly a thing because of the fit and the team. Their lineup is insanely cool and the pants fit perfect for all the riders. The hype isn’t because of a generation defining quality, it’s because they look cool and their team is dope lol

keagan.karstensI think Derek has the right idea but the shape and sizing of the pants needs to be tweaked, I see a few guys at bonezone wearing them and they just look superrrr tight. Like Luke O’Brien had the blue ones on and they were practically hugging his legs. If that’s the style Derek wants then there’s not much to say but overall if you want them to sell I think he’s gonna need to change them. Or at least throw in something new and exciting besides the fact that theyre made for park. Because otherwise they’re just another slim fit ski pant that people will continue to avoid.

edit, I think sometimes hate threads can be okay. Like this is a good example, he feels a certain way about something and is curious about other peoples opinions. He didn’t jump out the gate saying “fuck syndicate, syndicate sucks derek should quit and never make outerwear again”.

I like to imagine that if "hate threads" didn't exist skiing would be in a dystopian state where everybody wears their goggle straps outside their helmets and daffy butter on their french engineered rossignol sprayers. And when they walk into the lodge they unzip their floral saga vest and watch the helmet mounted gopro clips they got last run.

You would be surprised how many Euros are on here. Especially finns.

Sweden/Norway/Denmark has freeride.se. Many countries don’t have a local, active freeski website so they come to NS. Start looking for it and you’ll start to notice that it’s way more than just American and Canadians freeskier on here. Which is cool.

I guess I’ll give my two cents being the only person in this thread who actually uses their gear. I’ll start off with the pants. Yes they are a little tight compared to the traditional park pants. I would like them to be baggier but at the end of the day I would rather support the homie and give a little help for his brand rather than go to savers to buy some 3XL track pants. Also the pants are the best quality pants I’ve seen. They have a lot of minute details that a lot of other pants lack. Yes they are expensive but you pay for what you get. Also the pants derek gave me are the first pair of free pants I’ve gotten in 5+ years. Which leads me to my next point. Shoutout derek for supporting the homies grinding that aren’t competing. Just because I’m not traveling around the country spending thousands of dollars at rev tours to compete doesn’t mean I’m not working my ass off to improve my skiing. It can be very hard for someone like myself to get gear when your telling a sponsor “hey all I’m doing this year is posting clips on insta” so shoutout to derek for supporting the homies who don’t compjock. Onto their other gear. Just like thee pants their hoodies have a lot of small details that I think need to be advertised better. The kozzee hoodies are literally the most comfortable hoodies in the world. They got this microfiber stuff that makes them feel like a blanket. The layout of the hoodies are also very well done and unique. I could go on but I think you guys get the point. To reiterate what I want people to get out of this is yes the gear is a little expensive but the quality competes with companies like north face and O’Neil. Derek’s a fucking homie for supporting the underground skiers of the world. Don’t bash on gear till you’ve tried it.

NS proceeds to make a “casual hate” thread destroying the guys passion and livelihood while wearing track pants from goodwill and a Patagonia micro puffer that 11,000 other kids in town have. Seriously, this thread is garbage. If you don't like a product, don't buy it. OP and the rest of the people hating on syndicate come off as a self conscious pricks. Not every style of outerwear is going to be a hit with everyone and that's ok. It's one thing to look at some outerwear and say "eh that's not for me," and another thing entirely to go out of your way to validate your shit opinion in a toxic circle jerk of a thread with a bunch of internet strangers who haven't lifted a finger for the ski community. I hope y'all remember this is freeskiing and there's no right or wrong way to dress yourself.

never said i wasnt rooting for syndicate tho, i fuck with the fact that they hook up some sick underground homies like kellan baker. all i was pointing out is, that as a consumer there is not much leading me to purchase their outerwear as opposed to something like harlaut with their unique designs (even tho i personally am not a fan of hh). i do like the way they are focused on durability, but its hard to justify a wack fitment with durability that i could probably get the same of from a pair of north faces.

Honestly liked the look of Montec originally, but over time was annoyed how often I got spammed with their ads.

Eventually when I started seeing the gear on the hill it was almost always rocked by douchey Gaper yuppies who clearly spend way too much time online shopping for their 3 Ikon ski trips a year.

I’m trying to be less judge mental about ppl who don’t live in the mountains, but they make it so hard when they continue to suck so much ASS.

OP wtf have you done with your life?? Pretty sure you’re not a pro skier/entrepreneur/business owner/influencer. Props to Derek for chasing his vision to be a hardcore skier, start his own business, and launch a team and a platform for his crew. It’s inspirational stuff even if you don’t like their first year launch. It’s the type of brand this community has always supported.

It’s definitely more lifestyle/park style…. Probably not gonna hold up in the backcountry but perfect for spring park skiing…. Which is what that crew is into. It makes perfect sense. honestly I haven’t seen much of the product but I thought the hoodies were dope.

here’s the big difference: Montec was started by an e-commerce conglomerate trying break into snow sports. Hence the cringey marketing scheme. Syndicate is actually just some hardcore ski bums trying to launch their own business and hopefully establish themselves financially a little bit.

It’s fine if you don’t like it but you honestly can’t knock the hustle.

People are still allowed to criticize brands if they want. Although some of the criticism in this thread isn't very constructive, its the internet and people will speak their minds. You cant shut people down by saying "you didnt put in the work and start your own brand." I hope the syndicate guys are successful too, but people have their own opinions.

Unpopular opinion: I’m kinda digging the syndicate pants.

From what I’ve seen from the edits they seem more like the pants taper down near the ankles. I’d be more inclined to consider getting a pair if I saw a pair in person as well.


Also the hate depending on which pants you wear is pointless. Wear whatever ski pants you like, and try to make the rest of the fit surrounding the pants work so you don’t look whack. Personally, I like the baggy, but tapered fit and I also like bibs, so I have a pair of 686 bibs.
