noahwoodford1I’m looking for a camera I can use to film and take photos skiing with. No more than 700$ish dollars. More focused on videos than photos.
I have a cool sony handycam, it is an older version so the quality looks really cool. It still works I am just missing most wires and accessories I'm thinking of selling it or restoring it.
But fr cop some sorta HD dadcam with servo zoom. If you want to go big go with a Panasonic HVX200, Panasonic HMC150 (or HMC40), they’re decently sized cameras but produce a great picture and have a handle on the top which is clutch for fisheye shots.

I've used a Canon 6D for years. That camera is goated for its lowlight performance. It's full frame, and you can get the bodies anywhere from $700-$1000 depending on who is selling it.
Bought a handycam but it was broken. The footage aint too bad from what ive seen tho but if u buy one try to see it and make sure everything works first but theyre like under 2-300
I'd personally suggest the GH3 or GH4...sony a6XXX line lacks heavily in the battery category and add in the element of winter you'll be stuck in a pickle. I remember spending a chilly February in New England shooting a lax game and only going through 1.5 batteries over the course of the 2hr long game. It'll give you a taste of both video and the ability to shoot photos. Plus it's not going to put you back too much in terms of cost.
So why did you say you're talking about p2 cameras specifically? If you mean you're only talking about cameras that use p2 cards, you're talking about one camera, the HVX200. Other cameras, like the HMC150 use SD cards and look identical to the HVX.
Calling a camera a 'prosumer solid state camera' literally applies to anything that uses an SD card, films video and is less than $5k

Not to mention the monitors on the sony cameras is ass, the gh3, 4 or 5 are all great choices just depends on what you need and how much you can spend.
@OP if you want a mirrorless camera, the gh3 with a fisheye and a mid range lens would fall into your budget.

If you want the best possible image quality for the lowest price go dslr or mirror less because the sensor will be bigger than what u can get with a camcorder. How ever if u don’t want the most crispy shit. And prefer ease of use and a more enjoyable experience get a prosumer camcorder. I bought a HMC40 about a month ago for 600$ with 22 operating hrs and a large Panasonic battery and charger. Shit is perfect. Almost all the same features as a HMC150 or HVX or HPX and same quality footage just way cheaper and smaller and lighter. Records to SD cards so just pop it into a computer no problem when u wanna edit. Love the servo zoom, and manual iris and white balance and focus options. Along with the two scene files you can set up.
Shoots full HD 720 60p or 1080 30p and would be a great choice for filming skiing. Also rarely easy to use so you can hand it off to your friends. Hope this helps yah.

I have the option to buy a Nikon D3500 for 550$ with a couple lenses. Seems like a good camera but I honestly don’t know. Does anyone have experience that camera?

Do you uses it for mainly skiing or other stuff too?

Also I don’t mean camcorders footage is gonna look crappy. It’s just the smaller sensors just won’t sense as much light sometimes. Which can make footage somewhat noticeably less crisp than a DSLR

Maybe a stupid question but what’s “mirrorless” do?

Definitely not the "best" option in my opinion but it sounds like it shoots 1080p at 60fps which is pretty solid, that's what the GH3 shoots.
I would recommend the GH3 or sony a6000 over this nikon camera, theres a reason its so cheap. In the video/photo world, you get what you pay for and the lenses you get with that package are pretty trash usually, something to consider.

That’s the only thing holding me back from a camcorder. It would look great for skiing but I also plan on doing school sports photos and videos and having the crisp quality would certainly be better for that.

DSLRs use a mirror to operate the viewfinder, while this mirror is down the sensor is covered. Mirrorless cameras use a digital viewfinder and there is nothing in front of the sensor other than some protective glass.
Mirrorless cameras can use much smaller lenses due to the short distance from the lens to the sensor, unlike dslrs where the distance from the sensor and lens can be up to 50mm.
Mirrorless cameras tend to be much better for video and are easier to adapt to any lenses.

If you need something that takes good photos as well, the Nikon you mentioned could be a good compromise, or get a sony a6xxx. The gh3 doesnt really take great photos in my opinion.

I second this. I love camcorders but they don’t rly seem to fit most of your needs. I have used a nikon d5300 not the 3500 to film mtn biking, and take photos of skiing, school sports, school events, hikes, animals etc. Nikon makes some great cameras for taking photos and they do film pretty great footage as well. No stabilization so ur gonna want a something to help hold/stabilize it while skiing and a tripod for long lens. I’m no expert by any means with that but I’m sure Evan could help point u in the right direction.

Usually I’d agree but it’s a friends camera so I don’t think the quality of the lenses is bad cause it’s just a friends discount

I already have experience with a canon 750d from a school class. Im pretty good with operating system as well. What’s the consensus on canons?
I agree the hvx and hpx colors are hard to beat. but you can have great colors in a 4:2:0 color codec and 4K resolution with a cx350 and barely notice the colors being slightly less high of a codec. But you can notice that the 4K resolution looks a lot more clear than 720 60p
