Biffbarf...no. race has nothing to do with it. It's the exact same thing you're describing.
If enough americans don't want to scrub toilets, work fast food, bump lifts, pick onions, etc. The demand and therefore wage for those positions will increase unless foreigners are exploited. Often times, the opportunity is worth it for them however their employment, legal or not, takes away the opportunity for wages to increase for the local labor force. You can disagree all you want, but this isn't opinion, it's just how things work.
Now you can say things like, they should get a living wage for working full time. That's a valid opinion. The only problem with that is for foreigners coming from nothing, their interpretation of a living wage is drastically different than what a majority of americans want.
theabortionatorI mean a lot of the j1's are decently well off. They just want the visa. It's a short term thing. They come in december and leave end of march. It's their summer break from school.
We can argue about this and that, but there's some difference between college kids on summer break wanting to hang out in America, and people coming to this country to try and make it and send money home. Honestly Some of the work that your "they took are jerbs" people are talking about actually pay decently. You still don't see that many people wanting to do it. Also they very a bunch in areas.
I also still think there's a big difference between people here looking for work, and actively going and looking to import work to exploit cheap labor rather than pay a wage that's not even great, but is comparable to what fast food is paying. That seems pretty fair.
This isn't a lack of wanting to pay union wages, or what this person thinks their skills are worth. If the fast food industry is paying up that much, it really shows the issue. The ski industry is really the only place in these towns doing this.
Biffbarfhow do you know the jobs often done by exploited foreigners otherwise pay well? It sounds like the situation is more likely that there are better/easier job opportunities for legal citizens. You can't just portray certain people as lazy and certain people as not, that would be racist.
Why does the ski industry expect labor so cheap? Again, it's because they can! If it's not J1's that just want a summer vacation, jobs will be filled with 'broke' ski area employees that are subsidized by their damn parents (especially the hashtagvanlife crowd). The average unskilled ski industry labor, at least at major resorts, aren't people looking to make ends meet entirely themselves. If they were, wages would go up.
This is a somewhat related tangent, but I think you and I are kinda funny tbh. You've mentioned that your parents are very conservative religious types and how that has effected your life in the worst ways. I can't relate with those specifics. I feel for you but I could never understand. By all means, I am not trying to take a jab at you. My parents and their friends, on the other hand, were the free-love hippie types. Trying to live the skibum dream with money funneled to them by the resorts, city market, local music shops, and last but not least... their parents. I struggled a TON growing up with that minimalist hippie upbringing. All I wanted to do was rad shit like skateboard and play THPS. There was no concrete to skate, unless you drove into breck (this was decades ago, breck has badass infastructure now). There was no TV, and there was certainly no 'Nofriendo 64' as they would call it. Parents split, we never had any cash, skiing was forced onto me and tbh I HATED it. And I hated constantly being broke. I did things they'd never do to 'get out' for more opportunity. I joined the military, went to school, things of that sort. I still to this day see family friends struggle with the same sentiments in this thread they struggled with 25 years ago. Sure, some of them get life time passes because they worked for them for so long, but they're still living off parent's inheritance because patrol, snowmaking and construction are all jobs that younger people will still gladly live in their vans to do in order to ski. Now there's a rant, but it's friday and I don't have much better to do. If you made it this far Borty I hope you kinda see where I'm coming from on this. I have no hard feelings and I'd love for people like yourself to travel, chase their dreams, live in beautiful places, and do exactly what they want because that's what life's all about. But it's hard, and most people don't get a free ride so we gotta figure out how to work with what we got.
.Brink.trying to move back to big sky and find rental housing outside of employee dorm style even with a very good job and a lot of savings was impossible at any price. I ended up having to throw down a huge amount of my life savings to buy an absurdly expensive condo because that is the only viable option if you want to stay in the community for anything more than a year. I was only able to stay 2 years last time I lived here pre covid and that was because I lucked out on finding spots to rent through word of mouth. Now those places are dried up and it's buy whatever you can, while you can. Or live in bozeman and still pay $1300-1500/month with an hour and a half commute each way every day with all the contractor traffic.
theabortionatorYeah, that's not what I said at all but send it okay.
Yeah, accept for it's not. Say whatever you want to fit your narrative my dude. They can't fill the positions with broke ski bums subsidized by their parents. Those people are vanlife and just buy a pass. You go back to the market thing. Again that's why they're literally targeting and campaigning to bring in foreign workers. These aren't people randomly applying, these mountains seek them out. But sure, there's a shortage, but there isn't because they can bring j1's in which proves there isn't a shortage or whatever you're doing there.
I don't really get how that's relevant. I get that your upbringing shapes who you are but it seems like you have a hatred of ski bums, and a pretty warped view of the ski industry. A lot of the labor I'm talking about are not ski bums, many don't even ski much anymore. These are skilled people that keep the mountain running. This isn't "Yeah sick braaaaaaa powder days lets be dirtbags" vibe.
I have traveled extensively. A lot of that was from husting and working my ass off in the music scene for a while. I'm actually good at saving money. Now I'm more sendy because life is short. I've been to more countries than many people have been to states but my parents never put a dime or had a dime to put towards any of that. The pull yourself up by your bootstraps and deal with it attitude gets annoying. I did that. I went to a fuck ton of cool places none because of my hard work in the ski industry outside of using that as a reason to be places and get visas.
I left the garbage paying VR and moved to a job that pays well and rent is cheap. I did that, people keep suggesting it here, I did that. But it's fucking garbage still the way these resorts are running on this. People have their narrative set up. "Lazy ski bum looking for a handout". Sure this is possible, but I don't think asking to pay rent with several roommates and buy groceries is a handout. Also, I'm not even talking about this to gain for myself. Sure the whole industry should get paid significantly more, but I'm in a good spot. I feel like a lot of this thread is targeted at "those people". At the moment I'm not one of those but I still believe the things that I've said several times in this thread.
The fact that you end with talking about a "free ride" shows you really don't understand this issue or what im saying. I don't see how asking to get paid the same as burger king or taco bell is a free ride. Doesn't really sound like it. I don't see how it's so wild that if you want people to work in an area full time plus, that maybe you should be able to pay rent and buy groceries. That seems pretty reasonable. We're not talking about free rides, cash cows, buying ski town houses, new cars. Literally just existing.
I don't even know what you and some of the people in this thread are fighting about honestly. I makes things seem even bleaker. Maybe Everyone should leave and go do other trades and let the ski industry die. That's a great way to spread the stoke. I'm sure none of the people suggesting that in this thread would find anything to complain about if things at their mountain were insanely subpar.
Again, we're not going to agree on any of this. You hate your parents, I hate mine cool. But you have some weird hatred of bums and ski bums and everyone that works at a mtn is either a bum or riding on their parents money so basically a bum. That's really not how it is. You can view the world however you want but that isn't truthful. So yeah dude, do whatever I really don't care.
BiffbarfI think you took that a bit too personally fam.
theabortionatorThere's way too many people on this planet. I hate that it's a thing, but that probably will work out for you. Everybody and their mom is moving to idaho and montana these days. Prices are getting insane. Better to own something if you can pull it off. I can't wait for everything in this country to turn into strip malls. Good you're paying into something you own though. With the rent prices in these towns that's a sick move. Sucks it's come to this but good on ya.
theabortionatornot really. I'm not mad, but you quoted me, I massively disagreed with you and I replied. Sure I've been a little ranty in this thread but I think a lot of people in here are missing some stuff, and skipping over things that don't fit with what they already believed. Almost like it's not worth arguing like I said a couple posts ago to you. So I'll let you believe whatever you want.
BiffbarfNah fuck you dude. I tried to be cool, you go off projecting on how I hate this I hate that. Acting like there's some 'narrative' because we may disagree.
So what are you gonna do about it then. Bitch about wages for the next 25 years and be exactly where you're at now? Seriously. Make solutions or get busy getting shit on. Won't make a difference to me.
.Brink.It's been frightening to see 400sqft studios I could have bought in 2018 for $100k or less selling for $450k+ with no end in sight and every neighbor is an airbnb. I know we are just catching up to other places but the last 3 years have been insane.
theabortionatorLol sick dude. Not surprised. I mean that vibe was bleeding through in your posts but whatever.
If I can't personally figure out how to single handedly fix the problem then there is no problem. That's pretty much it. Everyone in the ski industry are lazy bums anyway. Maybe just quit skiing and join your local polo club or whatever.
Like I said, I left the shit paying places and found a good paying job with cheap rent. Your still arguing the same trash because that's what you're wrapped up in. Everyone at ski resorts is a bum or whatever. I found a good spot but I still believe in fixing this problem.
I'm racist for suggesting an issue with the j1 visa, everyone at ski resorts is a bum, I'm an asshole, cool. Glad I know all the answers. See you never.
This went pretty much how I expected from your other posts in the forums. Can't say I didn't see this coming. Have fun this winter, try not to be such a dick maybe. Thumbs up dot jpeg.
Biffbarfunskilled labor =/= lazy bums. Stop putting words in my mouth and projecting what you think my stance is based off your own insecurities.
EdudeYea, but you do get that people work seasonal jobs though right? Even if it's not your career you should still be getting paid a fair amount. No one is saying the same or more as a person who works in the resort year round, but the people operating your favorite chair should be able to pay their rent, gas and some groceries.
Dustin. This problem is easy to solve. Stop agreeing to work for pay that's less than you need. That's not "the man's fault". That just makes you a fucking idiot.
partyandBSIts probably listed in this thread but im not about the reading lol. What job for what town? Are you leaving a corporate job to move to the town of your dreams or does the town somehow own or revolve around the corporation you work at??
Young_patty2 of my friends moved into an apartment down the block from me. Get this- smaller size than my single unit, basement level, they put a wall up between the bedroom to make it two rooms instead of the original single room. $1200 a month.
moved in with:
-broken windows
-the wrong keys were given to them
-no dishwasher
-no on site laundry
-a huge mouse trap in every room
-A bathroom so small if you’re pooping the door can’t be opened
both come from wealthy families but there’s literally no rental housing in Bozeman atm, one of the dudes mom almost cried when they moved in cause the place was such a shithole. I also know of girls that are paying almost 4K a month for a house and it’s literally backed up to a trailer park outside of town.
Now there’s 2 dudes living in vans/RV’s on my block alone and a ton of homeless strips popping up on side roads in town.
this is all in Bozeman but yeah, times are weird for sure.
donotreplyHonestly it’s just to a point where it’s ridiculous . Sadly I managed to find a place for the season me and my friend are just pretending to be « a couple » for this season to split a room apparently there’s 8 other people in the house I’m glad we found a space but we’re gonna split 2.5 k for the winter. It’s messed up like I’m hopeful to find something cheaper and better in the future but this is how messed it is
DominatorJacques10 in one house! How many bathrooms, and how many kitchens? How many refrigerators?
Good luck with that!
NoSkillsCrewI ski more now as a full time librarian than I did as a rentals person. I also love solitude but fuck its management. If you cant run a business and pay people a living wage you shouldn't be in business.
/rant
junior1derfulThe free season pass thing is complete bullshit. So many employees at resorts work 5 days a week so they can only use it twice a week. It's almost pointless if you can barely even use it.
sarcI hear land is $5/acre in detroit. Peace and quiet, the wild frontier, where people can make it with sweat and hard work.
I seriously expect to hear this at some point.. Maybe manhattan. Meanwhile in bozeman.....
Poindexter.V2How does one end up a full time librarian? Always been curious
donotreplyThankfully there’s 2 kitchens and we have our private washroom but yeah :(
