Edges sitting high above base, should I leave it or grind it?

Any shop people, gear knowledgeable types have any advice? Sitting pretty edge high. Could probably get a free base grind if that was the move but would kinda suck to have sharp edges again.

Edges dulled in pretty nice last year but still work for riding the mountain(big mountain vibe kinda mountain) I hit rails on this board but also want to be able to do a bit of both. I have another board dedicated to riding the mtn pretty much.

Trying to decide if it's better to just deal with it or get it ground down. I've never gotten a board that wasn't flush or pretty close to it.

Can barely see it. Can feel it. Could probably get a picture of it where you can just notice though. Idk, the nose and tail are flush but edge pops up pretty high. Not like it's sitting an inch above the base, but it's pretty high.

The edges on my park skis are similar to what you're talking about. They've been like that for 2 seasons now. For me there isn't much noticeable difference unless i'm carving on icy/super hard pack groomers, where the edge hold isn't the best. As for softer snow, jumps, and rails they've been fine. For reference I don't ride crazy aggressive though. Maybe if you do big disasters onto rails it might be a good idea to get a base grind the get everything flush again to avoid blowing up your edge.

My roommate is a ski tech and he said that he would get a base grind then just re-detune the edges with a diamond / gummy stone. "Maybe just ride it for a bit and see how it holds up, then go from there."

I say why not, if you can get the grind for free, especially if the edges are as high as it sounds. It'll make a pretty noticeable (positive) difference, and you can just ask the shop to detune the edges a bit more than normal (or just go to town with a gummy stone when you get them back)

My fellow boarder here is talking about a snowboard, not skis. just so you all know. btw @theabortionator and I are on good terms and will be shredding the big mountains on our boards together.

also, i don't understand why you wouldn't just do a base grind if you can get one for free. also don't see the issue of the edges sitting high, unless you plan on board sliding your way down the big mountain over sharp rocks and tree roots.

I've spelled this out several times.
The base edges (for riding rails) need to be beveled long! This means you bevel to 1 degree into the base plastic so it affects the plastic at least 1 to 2 mm's.

Edges high suck wind!
Bevel them down to meet the base plastic!

Friend made me an account so i could post park updates in our local mtns cult.

Modding eheath was looking for a mod and asked the people. The people of NSG voted for me for some reason. Also I'm on here quite a bit and pretty mellow, don't get angry at members.

And I skied for many years.

But yeah, I don't see how it's that crazy I find theads about skiing mtns interesting. Also half my friends ski.

As far as this thread there's a lot of knowledgeable ski shop and gear types on here so I figure I woukd ask. Pretty straight forward.

Absolutely base grind true flat, re-bevel base edge, then re-detune to your taste. Railed skis/boards are a bitch to ride. Hooky on snow, and metal.

I agree, although absolute flat is not always necessary, or always possible in some cases. Good and true^

Totally agree. Some equipment is so railed & edge-high it'll grind through to core before it gets close to flat.

Right back at you. An edge high ski can make one ask..........did I forget how to ski?

So, even if it's not totally flat, better bevel those base edges down to meet the plastic and then some. Then I use a sharp metal scraper to take off the base to meet the edge smooth! OMG, I can ski again!

To my knowledge the bases of skis dont get worn away from skiing bc ptex is very durable.

be careful about shops that do base grinds, if they dont know what they are doing they can make your skis alot worse.

i would say just melt some hard durable waxes into the base.
