Feels great, the wind flowing in your hair, no chin strap digging in or added weight to your head. Early season or spring is pretty damn hot some areas, so there’s that factor as well.

It’s the same reason some people don’t wear a condom, it feels great, but yes dumb as hell not to.

look I’m an advocate for helmet wearing. I rarely ride without one, but I feel like alotta people on here are lying to themselves by saying it doesn’t look cool / it feels no different.

Definitely not worth the consequences though.

They’re not good enough reasons to not wear one, but people choose not to for style reasons, the way it feels without one, and because they don’t think they’ll hit their head.

the ridiculous part is that helmet manufacturers don’t want to meet people in the middle. With all of the amazing tech out in the world it’s wild that we haven’t seen a legitimate beanie like helmet, or a much lower profile one that meets safety standards.

My dad paralyzed himself from the neck down with a helmet on. If only he was wearing roost deflector / chest protector / body armor, maybe he would have fractured his spine a little less bad but who knows.

Look I get it, people can crack their melon and that it would be stupid to not wear them, but you know what else is stupid? Flying at 40 mph on two wooden planks and hucking ur body into the sky and flipping upside down, or grinding a metal rail that you can fall on. Don't tell people to "wear a helmet" to protect themselves if ur gonna also participate in a risky ass activity for fun. Don't ski if you don't wanna get hurt how about that? Let people be, there will always be rare instances of people getting fucked up in action sports, you can only do so much. People have died with helments on and gotten permanent brain damage too. We should all never forget these people. Ride kevin, and ski in paradise sarah burke.

After watching my dad mope in an electric wheelchair for a decade, I can say with every inch of me, from the bottom of my stomach, the only thing you can do to truly keep yourself protected, is to ride within your limits. Other than that, it's up to chance whether or not a freak accident will fuck you up for life.

I have refrained from giving my thoughts on this topic for a while but after seeing jackasses in the comments bashing non-helmet users for no fucking reason time and time again I felt the need to just remind everyone that the only way you're gonna get hurt skiing aside from a wild coincidence is by literally pushing your limits. helmets can help but if you are progressing to wild extremes, you should know exactly what you are putting at stake, and it's not just head injuries that can fuck you up. Most pros probably realize this and understand how much danger they are in constantly, which is why they choose comfort since at the end of the day, a head injury is just one of many that can leave you permanently damaged for the rest of your life...

yeah all of these are spot on

manufacturers don't really have a lot of room to "meet people in the middle". at the end of the day, helmets are meant to break in traumatic impacts because breaking plastic and foam absorbs a ton of energy that could have been applied straight to your head. there's just mechanically limited ways to absorb energy on that scale. something soft foam or beanie-like or even car airbag style seem like they'd be good because they're great cushions, but they can't absorb energy like something breaking can.

Well, yeah, like I said those a freak accidents. Not everyone gets struck by lightning (though those are far more common than lightning strikes). But also like, a helmet will protect you yeah, but like I said, I guarantee you don’t wear any sort of body armor to protect your spine, just like everyone else, even though I would strongly argue it’s just as necessary. My main beef comes from people caring about helmets and weirdly, not chest protectors and other sorts of protection that can save your life. Either double down and wear ruroc and armor or accept that comfort plays a part in your attire you know? Guess I’m just mad people aren’t thorough with caring about protection, even though one visit to the shepherds center in Atlanta and those roost protectors will be flying off the shelves at the store….

as someone who has also had a parent paralyzed/eventually lost to a similar injury this is spot on. A helmet will definitely help with head injuries but the best way to guarantee your safety it is be aware of the limits of your skill level, your equipment, and your surroundings. a helmet isn't a magic cure for the risks involved in skiing

OP idk what your point is, who the fuck "reps the no helmet gang", your arguing to a person who doesn't exist and making helmet/no helmet into a trivial black/white thing. Just telling kids don't do drugs obviously worked back in the 70s/80s, so why bother teaching ski kids how to be situationally aware when you can just yell at them to wear a bucket from your high horse and call it a day. also use the searchbar dumbass

I have seen a lot of pro skiers/snowboarders repping the no helmet gang and I just wanna say, how does cracking your brain stem on a rock or tree sound to you? Like I understand the rush of not having your head be warm or having your hat always fucking fall off but I'm still confused. Seriously though, what's the benefit? Do you think you look cooler? Do you not care about your head not cracking open? Brain injury got so close to kill me . But this debate has been repeatedly done. Anyways even if you’re ok with no helmet trust me the trauma you might carry for the rest of your life because of that is probably something you never want to deal with.At the end of the day it’s your choice but it might affect other around you. Also helmets look dope now

People can do whatever. The last 10 years a lot of the kids grew up wearing them so they're pretty common. It's a personal choice. Def seen more street clips with helmets though. That's still rare but it's not as big a deal.

Personally every time I ski without a helmet all I think about is trying to not hit my head. I've had some heavy slams in the past 15 years boarding/skiing in the park and i'm glad I had a helmet on for all those crashes.

I remember 15 years ago it would be 50/50 of people wearing a helmet vs no helmet on any given day. Nowadays it seems like 100/1. Times change, and norms change I guess.

I think you should wear one regardless; even if you're confident in your abilities freak accidents do happen, and a TBI / permanent brain damage is not a fun time. It can still happen even with a helmet, but the helmet can help.

Bottom line: Do you. I'm not gonna judge anybody's decision to wear one or not, neither should anybody else. Unless you're a parent. Make your kid wear a helmet.

It’s gotten to the point like skating, where some they only really wear them doing big air or large features, and others wear them at all times.

though I think not wearing a helmet is kind of irresponsible, I won’t clown anyone for it, maybe a passing comment about it, but at the end of the day you can’t let loose on your homies for not wanting to wear a piece of protective equipment.

asparagusI never understood the point of not wearing a helmet skiing but then I got into skating and don’t know what to think anymore. I’ll still always wear a helmet skiing but it’s harder to draw the line in skating. I will almost always refuse to helmet up for a flat ground sesh sorry

I understand this. I feel like the closer equivalent would be hill bombing in skating and or airing out of bowls. I also think skating starting out as kind of a “poorer” sport made it harder to get helmets out considering it was just more money to spend.

I'm very confident skier & calculated risk taker but still I wear a helmet, crash pants, & back protector every single time I clip into my skis. I only take my goggles off on a hiking sesh. Just like I use a seatbelt when driving a car. Not because I don't trust myself, but because I can never control everything. It's also a huge role model factor for anyone below your skill level and/or age.

Such an american view of life to think it's just about yourself. Life is NEVER just about you.
