So When I’ve gone camping over the last 10 years I’ve almost exclusively gone backpacking. I’m looking to do more camping locally though and am gonna be camping out of my truck in a couple national forests. I’m just curious what everyone takes and makes for meals when they go car camping. There are a few things I’ve done in the past but I’m curious to see what creative things others might have come up with.
Grab a dutch oven, pour four cans of really juicy ipa, dice up a sweet onion and drop it in. Put in some brats. Once cooked char the outside to preference on the grill. Top it with the onions and enjoy.
Tin foil dinners. Pretty versatile but i usually cut up some meet, lettyce to keep things moist. Some taters, carrots, and some other stuff i have laying around.
Idk, always comes out tasting proper and something about it makes me feel good and reminds me of camping as a kid.

Can't go wrong putting a bunch of random in a tin foil pocket and cooking it up.
I bought a bunch of Hawaiian sweet rolls and some pulled chicken from the store for a car camping trip this past summer and just used my buddies pan to heat the food up or just ate it straight-up. Was filling.
Dinner: Tacos - ground turkey, taco seasoning, avocado, soft shell tortillas, hot sauce Lunch: Hard boiled eggs, maybe a pb&j or some tuna/spinach on some hearty bread Breakfast: Oatmeal - oats, peanut butter, strawberries/berries and banana (dried mangos and chia seeds if you fancy)
I'm all about using as few items to cook with as possible. Washing dishes takes a lot of water, and for longer trips it quickly depletes my water supply.
Had a faze were all I brought was jiffy pop and hot dogs, then a faze were all I brought was bagels cream chease , tomatoes and sprouts/Leattuce but last year brought up some frozen leftovers (chilli, Kung pow chicken etc( and heated it up, definitely tasty and simple, for years the first night I'd stop by subway, easy and always welcome. Then there's canned stuff like baked beans, chilli, fried spam. When it's hot out there's tomatoes with salt and pepper Really hit the spot fir me .
Lol trying to get away from the backpacker food😂. I agree though, I’ve don’t that with the packets of white chicken from Walmart. Sits like a brick in your stomach though.
My personal favorites:
- Bring a mini weber and grill some steaks.
- Catch some trout, filet those bad larrys and grill'm up.
- Burgers and dogs if you want something low maintenance.
You can pretty much make anything that you can at home (that doesn't require an oven) when you're truck camping. Just go on food network and find some shit that looks dank.
Egg+flour+milk, whisk it. Into the frying pan it goes. Add grated cheese ontop after flipping. Roll it up. Cheesy Omlette roll is done. Its quite jummy with jam aswell.

Chorizo + eggs in the morning. Roll that up in a tortilla with cheese for an easy killer breakfast burrito. Add onion, cilantro, salsa, etc for fancy points.
It's cliche but a fire-roasted hot dog is so good. Cooking anything over the campfire makes it taste better
Stuff for burritos/tacos
Peanut butter and jelly
Roast chicken or turkey
All meat sausage, steaks or marinated chicken to cook on the fire
Potatoes to bake
Oysters + shucking supplies
Udon noodles, your favourite soup stock, green onion and shaved beef for a nice soup
Halloumi
Brie or some other soft cheese to warm up on the fire and some pear/peach/apple/grapes to go with it
Pancake mix

frozen hash browns and ground beef with some corn and bbq sauce makes magical tinfoil dinners
The trick is to have everything prepped at home and cooked in a single skillet:
Breakfast: Chopped up turkey bacon, onion and eggs and potatoes scrambled together
Lunch: Sandwhiches
Dinner: Sausages, skilled cooked onions and peppers. Maybe a potatoes in foil.
(Pro tip- cook the potato's at home and they are MUCH easier to just heat up over a campfire.)
