PoubtvThere should be a zero tolerance policy for racism/sexism/homophobia. None of this “learn their lesson” bullshit. Hold people accountable please, especially when in a position of power.
Idk. A zero tolerance policy sounds good but it doesn't really work. Sometimes people fuck up, say something dumb try to be edgy. Also on the totally opposite end, as eheath mentioned people make alias accounts and it's really hard to curb it. If you can work with peoples main accounts it's usually the best way.
As mentioned the bans depend on the person and the offense, but they escalate. Also people leave notes sometimes about members that they've warned about certain behaviors and stuff. I think the system works pretty well. At the end of the day it's an open forum. The amount of bad shit is pretty minimal these days. Really all we can do is react. A lot of members are pretty good about it. They'll say something stupid, you delete it, message them, and it's never an issue again. Obviously that doesn't work for everyone, but NS has really cracked down on racism and homophobia in recent years.
A lot of people really don't like getting banned. People really do learn their lesson. I like that people are policing each other a little more and trying to curb that sort of stuff but sometimes it comes like the tough on crime shit our legal system has which really doesn't work. Sure we could ban everybody for everything right away, but that's not really the best call imo and also as mentioned people will make aliases as well.
Posts that go against the rules get deleted, bad thread get pulled, offending members get banned. I think it's a pretty fair system.
I'm a gay man btw so I really don't dig homophobia but I think the system here is pretty good.
I think you and I would agree that we want to get rid of racism and homophobia etc. But I don't think Perma banning everyone for everything right away is going to help achieve that.
The mods here are all 100% volunteer. I think it's a pretty solid group right now. People don't ban or delete with grudges. Things are chill but thing get taken down and people get banned when they need to and it's pretty even. As I mentioned a lot of people when you deleted something they say and message them, they apologize and it's no longer an issue.
Throw the book at everyone sounds good because you get justice or whatever. It's really not the best option always. I think the modding has been pretty consistent and decent on here though. Sure it's not perfect but i think people are doing a good job.
