I can see why some people would say no way, and that classical masterpieces blow deadmaus out of the water. But when if comes to the song strobe, i think at least on some measures, deadmaus makes classical music his bitch.
i dont even understand how joel would have known such an insane melodic beat system would end up working.

solid song but you’re comparing apples and oranges. Electronically producing music is sooooooo much easier that writing a piano masterpiece. Many composer put years even decades writing a single music piece. Listen to un sospiro by franz Liszt or arabesque by Claude Debussy. Also Beethoven was German if that means anything to you which I know it does lol

Haha yes i know beethoven was german. Bach is german too, and he is by far my favorite classical musician.



i watched(listened to) the 2 pieces you listed, and i still think if you forget about the musical tools joel zimmerman had at his disposal, songs like strobe are still dynamically at another level.

like listening to any classical, you may be blown away at times, but you never really say to yourself “Jesus i have no idea how he got there”

but whatever shit joel pulled to make strobe, i am literally saying to myself “Jesus how did he get here” because he puts together a system that i didnt even know would be possible.

i think if different songs were different dog breeds, then strobe would be another species.

To be fair an insane amount of skill/time/effort goes into actually making the sounds in an electronic track if you're not just using presets. Given his streams and the amount of actual analog equipment he has I'd guess that he does not use presets.

You have an insane amount of ways that you could tweak and tune one synth. 90% won't work with the song. Then after you do all that work to make one synth sound you have to do the same with the other 8-18 instruments in your song. Then you have to get into enveloping, sidechaining, mastering etc etc

Not saying one is better than the other. Just different...but sorta similar things. Both are more or less compositions. Each has it's intricacies.

Also, joel does composes orchestral shit to so there's that.

Never heard strobe so I listened to it just now for reference. I don't think I'll ever be blown away by EDM with a four-on-the-floor bassline. The song just isn't that impressive to me. I see the point you're trying to make but the song you used as an example is so incredibly mediocre. There are classically trained composers that make some awesome EDM, but Deadmau5? Nah.

One of my professors from when I studied digital music production makes some pretty cool shit with Tritonal. If you like classical music and EDM, you will probably like Nick Sibicky. He's generally just a genius when it comes to digital music but he's also a classical composer. Learned a lot taking classes and eventually working for him (/claim).

Eh. He probably uses polyrythms and weird time signatures/number of bars more than any other edm artist I can think of. Already sent this, it's kinda long but it's really interesting to see what joel does from the timestamp (9:50) to about 16 minutes.

It's rather simple stuff, but executed really well and that's what makes a mau5 song IMO. The use of polyrhythms in brazil is pretty cool, considering how there are multiple rhythms starting and ending and repeating and changing all at different points but they are all the same? IDK. Different strokes for different folks.

But to give Joel credit, he pretty much created, or at the very least popularized that genre of edm. He's got an enormous discography and has done shit in pretty much every corner of electronic music while also being responsible for some of the most famous electronic artists of yesteryear.

And he also composes some/parts of his tracks for orchestral as well. Here is the orchestral version of the song in question

Uhhh not overly familiar with it. Basically a certification. My understanding as a pseudo audiophile is that ACTUAL Dolby atmos studios are supposed to have just about the highest amount of audio fidelity possible. The best acoustics, sound balancing, etc. etc. If I remember correctly Joel's studio is actually suspended. Like the room itself is "floating" and not actually attached to the internal structure of the house to give it the best acoustics possible.

I'm an alcoholic idiot though so probably don't take my word for it and research it yourself

Dolby Atmos is their new codec that allows for additional 'height channels'. So you have your typically 5 channel system with a Left, Right, Center and Surrounds. Atmos includes a number of speakers that are ceiling mounted or mounted on the Left and Right speakers and shoot up to bounce off the ceiling. Maybe they are making music to account for these additional channels? That would be pretty wild actually. Here is an example of Klipsch Atmos speakers:

The "floating" studio is most likely for isolating bass response. Bass can cause your floor, walls etc to reverberate and this reverb can make the bass muddy or throw off a neutral response. You want your studio to be a neutral as possible because when you balance a track and you balance it with an acoustic room problem, you will correct the problem in your room but it will throw off the true track. Say you have a -4db null at your listening position at 45hz due to poor subwoofer placement. You are listening to the track and it sounds off so you bump the bass db +4 DB to sound correct. The problem now is when the track is finalized, anyone that does not have that null will have exaggerated bass at 45 hz which is not what the artist intended.

I dont really know how his studio was built up but its probably set up where the floor is suspended on some kind of isolation pads or something from the sub floor. Its not like he is playing the music out loud and recording with microphones like acoustic music so its actually not as important that its acoustically 'perfect' other than being a well set up mastering room.

Me, a classically trained musician who has played since the age of 5, working for years on technique and sight reading, and has played many works from Liszt and Chopin including Un Sospiro, can confirm that Franz Liszt would literally eat Jobes ass when it comes to making music.
