I'm a 38 year old stuck in the golden era of 2003-08 when short poles were in... can anyone explain why there has been a transition to long ass poles, often adjustable and powder baskets. They just look a little goofy to me when they're almost as long as the skis...

too long looks just as stupid as too short, but way more functional. Adjustable is just used for backcountry to adjust pole length for bootpacking just find what length suits you best

I told get the utility (usefulness) and know they're great for the backcountry. Just seems like a lot of park only skiers are using them exclusively. Guess its good to be green and have one set of poles! Not sure why it bugs me...just looks like a whirlybird when spinning and 3-4 long poles are spinning with them.

I ski everyday with my touring poles because I love being able to adjust my poles length throughout the day for what type of skiing i'm doing. A logical example I can give you is on a blue bird pow day. For the first 2/3 hours in the morning i'm skiing pow until its tracked out so i'll have my poles at my regular length (since i'm actually doing pole plants skiing pow). Then in the afternoon when everything is just tracked out moguls i'll hit some park jumps and shorten my poles up to help with swing weight + makes it easier for grabs. Personally I think adjustable poles with pow baskets style looks dope.

I got a set of racing poles with the hand guards on them a couple of years ago and thought they looked so dumb at first, but then I decided to really give them a try. They looked kind of weird, but for tree skiing punching branches out of the way became so much more fun. I also never had to use pole straps, and that meant I never had to worry about pole straps in lift lines. It's kinda a strange thing to care about, but i genuinely love poles with hand guards. It's weird, but it puts a smile on my face.

I remember Panda Poles! Did they just bite off more than they could chew with their shop or did Soul Poles (or whatever other bamboo pole) just drive them out? The guy behind it all, Sander Hadley was super chill.

I went no poles when I was teaching my daughter to ski, but I have always skiied poles so it felt weird. I too am stuck in the short poles era. Also my mountain has so much flat at the base its annoying to get around without poles and a kid to help

It was started by Tanner Rosenthal (I may have misspelled the last name) and Oakley White-Allen. Over time it became Tanner’s and then he had a family and I assume priorities changed.

Upon further research, Sander Hadley is/was not the owner, or even the guy I thought he was. According to an article (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.idahostatejournal.com/news/local/community-rallies-to-save-panda-poles-from-going-out-of-business/article_08acacfd-2b37-5769-9702-e667b9bf4f16.amp.html) he is working on telescoping bamboo poles...? Might be the new wave

t heed in my mind was the original to ride with long ass cross country style poles, straps on while riding- this was in the era of the super short pole.

basically the business just had too much debt I think to keep operating, I remember Tanner made a video about that and then literally everyone bought panda poles which kind of lifted it back to life for a second. I think he still honors his warranty, but I don't believe they are functioning right now.

If these baskets ever break imma need someone to 3d print me some cuz they're amazing. The bamboo, grips, and straps are all easily replaceable but those baskets make it worth it. The grips are nice but remind me of bicycle grips so could probably replace easily.

Short poles will forever be on top. Broke mine today tho, had 40 in. lines with the grab tabs but now I’m thinkin bout picking up some adjustable poles that could go down to like 36 just to mess around in the park
