Should I remount my On3ps...

important question - should I remount my on3p k96s? between sizing down a boot and the fact my style used to be different to what it is now, they're mounted +2 of rec. would I notice enough of a difference bringing them back to rec (or even -1, if anyone rides theirs here) for it to be worth drilling another set of holes in my skis??

I’ve done it before not because I wanted to change it but because I fucked up the first time when mounting and it’s not hard at all. Get the gorilla glue epoxy and click the holes w that. Then do ur new ones and if a hole over laps w an old one it’ll be no problem

I've always been told overlapping will cause a binding pull out so I've made sure to have at least a half cm between any two screw holes. For the second mount that's not usually an issue but third time around it can get tricky and start to fuck with the ski.

I would ski them first. Then decide if the mount works for you or not.

Remounting shouldn’t cause any issues. Go to your local ski shop and ask for some hole plugs and just use wood glue, that’s what we use at our shop and I’ve never had any issues.

1. Take your bindings off
2: put glue in all the holes
3. place the plugs in the holes and then lightly hammer all of them in
4. hammer the shit out of those things, really get them all in
5. use a chisel and carefully cut them off so they are flush with the ski
6. mount your new bindings, being careful to avoid the holes by at least a plug length (about 1/2 cm). If they don't work perfectly, move your heel piece not your toe piece.
7. go out for a fucking rip, they’re ready to ski

what is the boot sole length of the old boot and the new one? What bindings do you run?

If the model of the boot is the same, remember that you will only move forward half the lessened bsl of the smaller shell when you adjust the heels (if you have a binding with enough range to do that). 5mm (if it is the same shell down one mondo size) either way will usually not make or break a ski, but then again you are already at the forward limit of k96 at +2, so I would def consider mounting back.

I would go on the line if you evolved to more of a all mountain than a park skier. The ski works best there and going back will not make them more drivable nor dramatically increase their already good float considering their width, so you might as well go with recommended imho.

It will cause a binding to rip out don’t overlap your holes. As a certified tech I have seen all manner of DIY mounts and overlapping holes is something you don’t wanna do (I’ve done it myself to fuck around and prove people wrong and it doesn’t end well for your legs or your skis). For customers I make sure I have a full centimeter but for myself a half CM is fine.

@animator Okay it could just be me but on my last pair of skis(Nordica soul rider 97s) I miss drilled a hole and filled it with epoxy. Let it dry over night and then the next day Re drilled. Bindings never even budged and were super tight to the ski like no rattling or anything. At the time I was running 7 Din so maybe that played a factor. But I’d say you should be fine. But then again I’m not a ski tech guy I’m j speaking from personal experience

Sage advice, though BlackDiamond posted this piece of research a few years ago - so one can go a bit closer. Yeah, it is a limited sample size for sure, and it is highly dependent on ski layup and so on of course - but there is a bit of wiggle room. Still, better to be safe than sorry, no doubt.

Article says 7mm away or greater which checks out. Like I said, I do a full centimeter for customers just to be safe (and avoid a lawsuit because the United States is a stupid fucking place) but for myself 0.5cm.

Yeah if you read the sticky threads you should avoid talking ab personal experience/if you’re not certified/experienced in a certain field just to avoid giving bad advice to other people. I’ve seen it happen and it sucks to be the kid who listened to someone on a forum only to be shafted.

A razor blade cuts through those plastic plugs like butter too. The long ones (6" blades on those cheap box cutters), you can bend the blade so the cut is flush with the surface.
