Why do people hate TGR?

That reminds me of how Joss said on Dumont’s podcast that he could finally get his knee looked at when he got on US ski team and got their insurance. Crazy.

Why we don’t have nationalized insurance is beyond me.

BrandoComandoTouche - but a lot of those stunt guys get healthcare and life insurance since they're employees of a stunt company. Ski athletes tend to be independent contractors and usually don't get the same benefits. Hence the shift for corporate media companies like TGR and MSP to film segments that have less liability

TGR is not as bad as Warren Miller IMO but both companies are guilty of some shameless product placement and marketing shots. Warren Miller can be particularly cringe because its run by Time Warner (Comcast) and is a huge marketing push for lots of different companies, not just ski gear but cars, travel destinations, beverages, and fashion. It's definitely targeted towards families, little kids, and intermediates. Not exactly the kind of content people on this site are looking for and definitely not the cutting edge of the sport.

If I remember correctly one of Warren Miller's sons basically forced the OG Warren Miller out of the company, sold out to Time Warner but retained the rights to his voice and made about a decade of film's with AI WM voiceovers without him making a single dime off royalties. Warren Miller is the true OG ski bum so he turned around and violated his non-compete and narrated Level 1's Refresh basically telling the company to f off. It's still a huge opportunity for athletes and creatives so a lot of up and comers or people looking for more exposure will work for them.

TGR is not nearly as bad IMO and still definitely produce cutting edge big mountain films. Definitely more sponsorship based than many other crews so a lot of people also consider them involved in the "corporatization" of skiing but hey they're still making ski films and supporting new and amazing athletes all the time. Todd and Steve Jones started the company back in the 90s and some of those old films are insanely dope, especially if you're familiar with the Jackson area, they did a lot of pioneering stuff there and in Alaska. They pivoted towards filming and producing but were still just rowdy ski bums travelling and making films forever. Allegedly they almost went bankrupt a few times and that's why they've sought more corporate support. Now they have some finance/venture capital guys backing them who have pivoted a lot more towards marketing and franchising and merchandising.

long story short, neither media house is "core enough" for NS. That being said I know a lot of really dope skiers that work for both. TGR in particular still does tons of burly shit, and mostly people are just butthurt that its not them. Kai is going to do groundbreaking shit and is incredibly talented for his age. Haters can hate but we'll be looking at another Tanner Hall if he chooses to pursue it for 30 years.

Yeah, I agree with this. In addition to all the X Games stuff, Tanner Hall was hitting Chads switch in 05. I can't really think of anything more progressive than that. Maybe Henrik's nose bud trip, but I can't think of anything else in skiing where people have said, yeah that's just too gnarly and no one has gone back to try it again.

you can’t get that sustainable $$$ unless you arrange your production in a very marketable way. the videos we produce are of little overall value to sponsors compared with the other stuff we have to tack in an agreement like custom deliverables/content, photos, videos etc. we basically work enough sponsor content into our contracts with brands to give us enough money to produce a film, MAYBE enough to pay ourselves a little bit at the end but that’s an uncertainty most years. and this is considering a process where you have to blank out 10 months of your year to make one movie between planning, filming, producing.

for me, it sucks to have to think about making advertising content while i’m trying to be in a headspace working on an independent project. it really leeches my energy for everything. some people are much better at compartmentalizing and able to work both ski/film modes as well as marketing mode at the same time. and that can make the difference in longevity. and i’m talking for only myself, not for andrew, not for anyone else in strictly.

so i’m not saying smaller outfits like ours couldn’t make more money, but at what expense? at a certain point when you talk about a properly sustainable production you’re just making commercials and finding free time in the holes to work on the actual projects you want to make come to life. and that’s a great setup for some people and an awful one for others, like me.

Most people don’t have access to that shit yet alone skiing, but most people with access to skiing have access to a terrain park….. park skiing is way more accessible for people who are skiing then heli skiing, private coaching, ski academy’s, ifsa comps or great pow skiing….
