Mt.AssCool! I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while. How did you make it?
Ive been playing around with making stuff with carbon fiber and would like to use a cnc/router for mold making.
So far I’ve been modeling a ton in CAD. But I still have quite a bit of modeling I need to do to complete it. I’ve mainly been using 3D printed parts for the custom designs like motor mount

Thegenericskierhaven't fully determined max Z, but im assuming it will be 6 inch max. might do some sheet metal stuff but i would love to cut metal into 3D parts.
talked with the local community college about them machining some parts for me. they said they would love to support my project and they offered me machning classes next semester
did some of my first GRBL firmware editing, we now are able to home the y axis. X axis parts are on the way. should be doing some 2D tool paths with a sharpie pretty soon
Got my x axis brackets approved to be machined by my local community college. should have to part next week. i am thinking i will be cutting my first part in about a month.
I am now able to make my router move in a theoretical rectangle and I think ever firmware link has been ironed out. It’s been a good week. So far I am on schedule for project completion. Just waiting on machined parts to come in.
This project has been placed on hold until further notice. ETA is currently unknown on when I get my machined parts back. Until then I have nothing to do.

A little backed up with printed parts right now. Still need to find a working design for the y axis carriage and will probably print the x axis brackets shortly after.

Why did you decide to design & build it yourself instead of looking for an existing option?
I decided to go this route because i chose to build one for an engineering class and i've been wanting to build one for a while so this was a perfect time to build it. Also existing routers are very expensive
Cannot express how happy I am with how this looks, just need to wire the spindle and spindle PSU to the main PSU so I can control spindle speed and then we will be done
thats pretty awesome. Do you save alot of money building it yourself as opposed to buying a complete unit?
It should be. I’ve been running some simple test programs throughout the past week getting it ready. My total cost for this build is $623 for my router. I’m saving several thousand dollars building this instead of buying a prebuilt router or mill
