Yes. I grew up in the southeast. The amount of MFers I grew up with telling me they’re “so good at skiing” because their family goes to Beaver Creek once a year is unreal.
Motherfuckers go to a climbing gym one time and start talking about V-this v-that, get these shoes, buy this chalk bag. STFU. At least in Boston, most of these people have never actually climbed a real wall and think bouldering is something you only do in the gym
I do know that people underestimate how much better advanced skiers are than decent skiers, especially because it only takes 5 days on snow for people to ski every trail and “black diamond” at my tiny hill.
This is a good thread and I think the answer is yes. Reasons:
1. skiing is populated by wealthy people who are constantly told how great they are
2. the rating system exists partly for safety but mostly for an ego boost. Like Stratton is ONLY greens, but to make rich finance asshats feel good about themselves it has “blacks”
3. If you don’t ski 10+ days a year you won’t really know how hard it is to become a “good” skier. You’ll just keep skiing blacks in your 5 days a year and think that’s all there is to it
4. most people never go in the park
5. most people don’t ski challenging runs in shit conditions
also, new ski tech had made it way easier to ski all over the mountain. Rocker is essentially an ebike

I will say however skiing has always been like golf where people take one lesson from a golf pro and they think they can shoot in the 60s from the tips. Same shit, different toilet. "My shit don't stink" has always been the vibe in skiing cuz of rich folks.

A lot of tourist skiers think they're nice at skiing bc they don't follow high level skiing and they can turn fine and maybe get down some moguls, and don't really understand the concept of progression in action sports.
I used to think I was cool asf because i was a good bit better than the average tourist skier on big mountain but after skiing more in my adult years, and consuming more skiing media I've realized I probably don't have the balls to ever be truly badass
I wholeheartedly agree with OP. Skiing and snowboarding have the biggest posers.
It’s a small enough sport where someone with an ego can get away with big talk because most people don’t know any better.
I live in NC - Neighbors thought this kid was a god for “ripping black diamonds” in Colorado (he uses rentals).
Also, gear and outerwear are everything in this sport. We judge people on it all the time.
I remember some kid at my home mountain got a g-suit and the empire Dumont hat for Christmas. He was a beginner and it was frustrating to see his swagger.
Think your off with skiing, when average skiers see a “real skier” they know they suck.
Tennis is stupid.

My friend told his new girlfriend (now ex) that I like skiing and her first response was that she's probably better then me because she's done black diamonds before.
I’m gonna go with mountain biking. Your level of “bro’ness”, is exactly proportional with how much carbon your bike has. Multiplied by the amount of suspension travel. Plus how many dollars over $4k you’ve spent on your bike … equals how rad you are. Manuals and IPA’s in the parking lot add bonus points to your radness. Who cares that you can’t ride more than 3 miles with out puking a lung.
It's skiing and tennis but we only see them when they're skiing. When they're in the mountains, they become Spyder Dad and are imbibed with a heedless arrogance that massively belies their abilities. Fun to watch but tedious to interact with.
Silverton is sick. That’s a good one to point out because your average laymen does not know of silverton. I’ve actually got a silverton sticker on my laptop that says “snow makes me wet”. My wife got it for me.

I forgot maps and sticks everywhere I visited this year, for whatever reason, Covid restrictions mainly, I was just in a rush to not be seen and just ski, plus I went to a lotta new places silverton being one, lift served bc is dope, that, touring and cat skiing are my focus this year rather than skiing ikon resorts , I’m starting to use them as “bases” .

Silverton is so sick. The season pass for unguided is stupid cheap and you get days at places like powderhorn (my old local) which has great glades and no lines.
The hike to the ridge at Silverton made my lungs feel like they were going to explode. Check out Ouray brewery over Red Pass next time you’re there too.
Add Ourayle (aka Mr Grumpy pants) brewery too. That place and that guy are both worth it for entertainment value. He sealed a beer for me off draft once when I asked for a to-go. Just bottled it off like off the line ha
