Weast coast skier makes the move

CaseyI spent a winter out there, I only skied Bridger Bowl because I got a pass and being new to the mountain was just kind of like fuck this I’ll go ski big sky when I get bored here and never did.

it’s kind of a mix of groomers, trees, chutes, moguls, the top chair has BC access- which you shouldn’t do being new to the area-

it’s usually cold as fuck with savage fucking windchill- I grew up skiing the Cascades out in WA that interior winter cold is nasty AF- but unlike the coast the storms and weather is super predictable which is nice for planning a trip.

animatorBoys boys boys. This season I have my first ski trip out west. My cousin and his fiancée are gonna be living in Bozeman and I’m gonna go out for a few days to ski Big Sky and Bridger Bowl. I have a couple questions cuz I’ve never skied out west.

what sort of terrain should I expect at the two places? Open, exposed terrain? Trees? Big cliffs? Fall line stuff?
how are the parks? I’m not a huge park guy but love to rip through the jump line occasionally and do big straight airs because I can’t spin.

What would y’all recommend as far as skis? I only want to bring one pair (I haven’t made my quiver selections yet). I’m thinking something 110 or so underfoot as I can float in some freshies but still rip groomers (my knee sucks and I really love to make a good groomer turn nowadays). If anyone has any suggestions shoot em at me because I only have my prodigy 2.0s and will most definitely be buying at least 2 pairs this season (most likely more).

lastly, anyone local??? NS links are always welcome and I’d love to find some stashes (no spot burning)!!!

Schoess110 is fine, but the iconic 1 ski quiver is around 100 underfoot. You'll still be able to float around in pow on a 100 no problem but it will have big advantages on groomers.

Keep in mind this is coming from a dude who has spent multiple midwest park seasons on a 108-112 so I appreciate a fat ski and love it, but it would be easier to do literally everything on a 100 or so. Either way, have fun and enjoy it!

BigPurpleSkiSuitJust curious, how much big stuff have you skied on 100s. I agree that the right 100ish ski can be good in powder too, but I've always felt 110-115 to be the perfect platform for out west sending, particularly at BB where there's a lot of cliffs, straightlines, and high speed in chop stuff where you don't want to sink a nose.

SchoessI guess the definition of big stuff is pretty relative. I've skied a lot of varying terrain on all my skis but keep in mind I've been living in MN so it's no Jackson Hole out there. That being said, I totally hear you and like I said I love the 110ish platform and I think it's extremely fun, I just think it depends on how big OP is and what his groomer to big stuff ratio will be. Neither is a wrong choice imho.

BigPurpleSkiSuitThats true, I've just seen that fat skis, particularly they way they are made today can ski groomers pretty damn well while still giving you float. I totally get coming from the Midwest, you'd feel more comfortable on skis that are 100 because a fat ski would not be that good on rails or ice. You're coming out to SLC this year right?

SchoessYeah the sidecut is really the big difference to me. 100 vs 110 the sidecut feels liker a 2x4 on the fat ski in comparison and the hardpack experience isn't as great.
