Skateboarding seems like the most un-olympic thing ever.
And I say that with the most love and respect for skating as a non skater.
Im furious that they decided to have it this year instead of waiting another year for when Covid might possibly be a little better and people could watch the events. The IOC is just forcing it this year to fulfill their TV contracts with networks. The Japanese people are being used as pawns in a game that they cant even attend.
As for the vibes around town and what it's actually like being here..You wouldn't even know that the Olympics is happening in town. Nobody is interested because there is basically no reason to be. It's as if the Olympics were taking place in Egypt or something rather than literally just down the street.
I was in Yoyogi park all day today - literally a 15-20 min walk from the stadium and it was just like any random Tuesday. Walked down to Shibuya for dinner and it was as normal as you could ever imagine.

3-on-3 Basketball being an olympic event is kinda funny, must be like D-Leaguers and dudes who play in euro leagues cuz our USA players probably wouldn't have stood a chance with our actual basketball team lineup

It’s weird seeing beach volleyball without an audience. With most of the sports I can hardly tell the difference, but beach volleyball definitely takes a hit without the beach party atmosphere.

Even more true after coming off of Rio which did it on the actual beach. That would have the been the best venue/event at those games.

We fucjed up on when finals were and i went to get food and got sucked into the bar. Watched qualifiers though. Shit was pretty sweet. Will watch finals at my friends as a replay.

Personally I'm hyped skating is finally getting some recognition as a legitimate sport rather than the stereotypical opinions it usually gets. Those saying it's just a way to get money out of the skate industry need to realize that's already been happening.
For me it will always be the godfather of freestyle action sports anything.
We owe terrain parks existing almost entirely to skateboarding!
And that is more legitimate than any Olympic broadcast imo.
But I also agree skateboarding needs to be recognized and honored at a world wide level. It's very conflicting for me.

Couple reasons. Basketball is growing on a global scale so other nations are fielding stronger teams than ever before. The US also had a lot of its top talent sit this one out so we have an arguably weaker team than normal. Also, international basketball is typically played very differently than an NBA game.
Damn, Nishiya Momiji and Rayssa Leal killed it! Wild that the gold and silver medalists are both thirteen-year-olds. Also, it’s super cool that Japan won gold in both men’s and woman’s Skateboard Street. Hopefully, skateboarding blows up in Japan now, haha.

Also this is a far-cry from Dream Teams of yesteryear. Absolutely some serious pieces missing. No Curry. No Lebron. No Kawhi. They have Durant and Booker and Lillard and that should be enough, but Still, the team is missing the best players in the league...
That, and also some of the absolute best players in the League are not from the USA. Giannis is Greek. Jokic is Serbian. Doncic is Slovene.

Brutha Olympic basketball is like Olympic soccer, nobody gives a fuck about it. It’s not nearly on the same level as the given sports r at the top tier of their respective leagues
Pretty damn stoked to see my boy Jagger get a medal. I still remember when he taught me how to drop in for the first time when we were like 6 years old. So stoked for him.

i agree with your point but holiday and middleton are both on the bucks, and draymond, durant and javale mcgee all played on the warriors together for 2-3 years
USA did bad in basketball because the NBA makes call like soccer does, you get touched go to the line. Doesn't work like that at the Olympics and the NBA players are playing like they are in a NBA game.
My interest in the olympics is at an all time low. I have far less of a sense of pride in the country I live in than I have in years past. I don't really know any of our olympians, and my mind is elsewhere with work and school these days.

Yea this reminds me of a recent story about someone who was running for office in the upcoming election. They dropped out of the race and made a statement saying they they couldn't handle the pressure and didn't want to affect their mental health. A week later they came out and said they were forced to drop out because they had some boudoir photos online (that they had already disclosed) and the party told them to say it was for stress/mental reasons.
No saying Biles has nudes online or anything like that, but it's tough to buy that someone like her would drop out at that stage in the game because of stress. Seems more like something she would be told to say.

It's disrespectful as fuck to the Olympics, the team, anyone else who would have made the team, and the country that you're representing. I'm all for expressing yourself how you want, but you're there because you're the best of the best and the team needs you to compete. If she thought her mental health would be an issue, no one would have faulted her for not going to the Olympics, but she chose to go, take a spot on the team, and then drop out.

Yeah, that's true, I forgot that alternates are brought to the games, so it's not like someone was missing out. I'm definitely overreacting because of the way I treated sports growing up. Especially as guys, we're taught not to show any kind of weakness at all, and compete because your teammates are relying on you at all costs. It's not the be all end all for life, and you're right that it's for sure a traumatic situation. In my opinion, after the whole Nassar debacle came out, the women's gymnasts should have formed their own organization and not participated in any events with US Gymnastics since it was clear they enabled that monster.

For someone who said they really weren't interested a few posts up you seem to care an awful lot. I'm with you that its lame that it takes a spot from someone else but don't make this a hill to die on. Biles has earned the benefit of the doubt.
