Tom Warnick and Ten and Two

Rewatched Ten and Two on my plane ride yesterday and noticed it said "Written by Tom Warnick"

First and foremost rest in peace to Tom, incredible style and funny dude, it's really tragic to see someone so full of potential surrounded by a game changing crew pass right before his friends literally changed the game forever. Maybe that's what drove them to achieve so much success in their niche of the sport. Who knows, but obviously shred in peace Tom, you were dope as hell.

But anyways, Tom actually died before that film was released, so when they say "Written by Tom Warnick", are they talking about the narrations in between segments? Or was the whole film just some sort of idea Tom had back in the day? I was just wondering what part was actually written by him, whether it was the whole concept behind the movie or just the narration or something else completely. I figured someone on here would know. Just a question that went over my head the first time I saw the movie.

Also, side note, rewatch Ten and Two, starting to agree with Dan that it's the best Stept flick. It would be easier to say if it had a Clayton segment, but everything about it was just so beautiful, and that goes beyond just the skiing. Pure art. At the end of the credits when they show the little video clip of Tom flexing his chains in front of the camera its impossible not to cry. 10/10.

It was always my impression that the spoken words were taken from Tom’s writings. I know he was at CU Boulder studying journalism. Tom was really getting into writing, sorta as he was doing less skiing as I understand it. Maybe it was an outlet for him during injury recovery or just in general.

timing wise, Tom passed away in late 2013. Ten and two came out in fall of 2014. Perhaps he had some conceptual idea for a ski film at some point. I think more likely the crew was inspired to use his writing in the film and immortalize his character. That really is what makes 10 and 2 the best Stept project in my eyes.


Glad you’ve been giving it more play! I’m due for a rewatch. Rip Warnick

Been a while since I watched it, but ya I believe I remember reading in a thread/article when the movie came out that the narration was taken from an essay he wrote for school about his love for skiing, relationship with his brother/friends (?), and journey to move west/growing up. Strong Hunter S Thompson vibes.

TBH probably the Stept movie I re-watch the least, but I deff need to crack this one open again

So it was Tom's writing... This movie hits too hard man. Generational ski flick with huge ideas, I wonder if we will continue to get movies like that. I love when the movie goes beyond just the skiing, definitely worth the rewatch

After I first saw this thread I reflected on my favorite movies over the years and that idea of generationally defining projects. We have continued to get movies that attain such regard in a sense. They all just appear very differently. Also, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. For Stept, many considered it to be mutiny. 10 and 2 always held that place in my eyes.

That being said, The film that changes how you look at skiing may never even get a second watch out of another viewer. i can get hung up on that sometimes because I definitely advocate passionately for my favorites over the years. Whether or not i have the same favorites as others I’m grateful that we have enough videos to choose from for a difference in opinion. The best part is there seems to be even more projects coming!
