I think they look sick when skiing, but...
Is it cultural appropriation?
Normally I hate that term but don't durags only function for the hair of Blacks, specifically for waves?
So wouldn't using one be almost like explicitly trying to be Black or something?
Well I think that it’s fine as long as it’s actually used for a practical purpose, like as a replacement for those ugly head caps. On the other hand, I don’t know about wearing it just for the looks. I don’t really know the ethics of it and whether or not it’s appropriation but if the durag is serving a practical purpose I’d say it’s acceptable.
Wear what you want if we start restricting people's clothing down to items that are "functional" we will all be wearing size shmedium and using appropriately sized poles. Let people wear what looks good in the air and upon after bang. Must HH cut his dreads cause he's Swedish and not Jamaican?

Wear whatever the hell you want. Style is style and that’s all there is to it. Ancient Greeks, romans, celts and Egyptians used to all used to have dreads. Nowadays a lot of people will borderline freak on a white dude with em, meanwhile it’s common for Black women to straighten/get blonde hair all the time. We all take style and looks from each other and that’s what makes life cool. It’s kind of like we’re honoring each other by copying things like fashion, music and food. I think the problem lies when we try to mimic and pretend we have lived the same life / have had the same experiences as other disadvantaged minorities.

NS is full of white fragility. You’re not wrong. And even though Isaac has long hair, a Durag wouldn’t help nearly as much as one of those beanies for dreads or something. Durags don’t offer support and are for keeping a hair pattern that us white people just aren’t genetically capable of naturally attaining.
The real question is should he be “allowed” to wear one which is kinda the same argument as should white people be allowed to listen to hip hop or is that cultural appropriation? Bring on the downvotes for trying to have a healthy conversation on here lmao

hahah what? oscar and henrik are huge fans of homies like Lucas magoon and have been imitating boarders for ages. Harlaut is one of the illest brands out there, inspired by snowboard brands. size schemedium brands are the reason why snowboarding is cooler than skiing

Here's some history for ya FruitBootPro. Ski culture has been exploiting black culture for cool factor since the early 2000s, THall pointed this out a year ago after George Floyd was murdered. Plenty of people on NS will defend this because it's easier to ignore this reality than to grapple with what it means. It was wack then, and it's still wack now.
The only thing that's a bit upsetting to me is how black culture is so present in the skiing industry (rap music in almost every edit, baggy clothes, etc).
But skiing has always been a predominantly white sport. How many black skiers do you ever see out there? Probably only a handful of pros.. and I don't know a single pro female skier that's black either. I just wish they were represented in the industry as much as their culture is that's all
A huge part of what made me fall in love with park skiing is the attitude that comes with it, the baggy pants & the old school hip hop edits. So I don't think it should change. But I definitely do think it should be recognized and respect where it comes from.

When I was in college I was the mascot for a year since it was the only paid job I could find. It also happened to be the year I grew my flow out. I actually bought a durag so that my hair would stay put inside the mascot helmet. Nothing else worked except a durag.
But generally yes idk what purpose this dude in the photo would have other than trying to be a wigger.
Quick history from Wikipedia. Originally designed to maintain hairstyles, but in the 60-70's it became an African American fashion statement. Then in the 90's rappers popularized them. And today while they do serve a hairstyle function, most folks using them are just trying to be gangsta or cool.

Exactly this, I agree it looks dumb, but the only reason people do it is it because they think it looks cool. Most likely they’ve been inspired by black culture or someone else in the ski community that has been inspired.

Baggy pants came from hip hop culture so are we supposed to stop? How about no white rappers anymore? 90s clothes in general were inspired by tons of hip hop, was that bad? If anything it bridges cultures when they share art forms.

IMO dont wear shit that you wouldnt wear in public. People tend to act real gangster with all there ski clothes and masks on but if you arent like that irl then youre just being fake on the slopes to try and be cool. Like I get it if you wanna wear baggy shit because it looks better but idk I personally think dudes that rock the durag are doing too much ngl.

I’ve worn a bandanna every day that I’ve skied since (way) before you were born or before they were called durags Mainly to keep my beanies from getting too sweaty and it feels tight. The only person being appropriated is maybe Axl Rose

Idk what his thoughts are on Harlaut but I agree with what @BLandz said. If something would look stupid just wearing it it doesn't look any less stupid when you're skiing. In snowboarding nobody's under the impression that wearing a durag and 10XL is anything but fucking ridiculous. Harlaut and similar type stuff seems like more of a costume than a fit to me if that makes sense

my point exactly, harlaut apparel is gimmicky as hell. appeals to the early teen / oldhead skiers who think 2013 was the peak of skiing and hate the bunch. harlaut himself used to be an enjoyable skier to watch back in like 2017 with no poles and good style, imo since his apparel dropped he kinda fell off
