Story time:

In high school, we had a project in sophomore year language arts class where we had to present a 10-minute speech on a career. Our teacher for that class, Mr. Hurrianko, had the biggest stick up his ass and was always self-righteous and condescending and he was fully aware of how much students complained about him. He'd assign bullshit essays and not even grade them just to make us do the work. He was a true asshole and he knew it.

This speech was the last major assignment for the year. Every kid needed to choose a different career, and you had to run it by Hurrianko a few weeks early to get it approved. You then had to interview someone who actually had that career. And you couldn't BS an interview, because Hurrianko would call the person and confirm that you actually spoke to them.

Enter Carter. He fucking despised Hurrianko. Even more than everyone else. He chose electrical engineer as his career. Hurrianko approved it, and nobody thought anything of it at the time. On presentation day, Carter walks up and starts his speech. He starts off "So I interviewed an electrical engineer. He told me how difficult and high-pressure his job is. He works long hours and had a ton of debt coming out of college. That's not the life I want to lead. Instead of talking to you about electrical engineering, I'm going to explain why being a bum and living out of a van is the career I want to have." The whole class was thinking "holy shit". Hurrianko was visibly pissed. Carter fucking crushed his speech about how sick it would be to live in a van and follow the surf up and down the Pacific Coast. By far the best speech of the whole class, which is what made it so perfect. After he finished, Hurrianko told him to "come see me after class."

The next day, I asked Carter what Hurrianko told him. I was hoping Hurrianko was going to say "Wow that was unique and creative and very well done. Way better than the repetitive cookie-cutter speeches everyone else gave. Great job". But nope, Hurrianko was too much of a dipshit to get over himself and gave Carter a 70% because he "didn't follow the rubric".

Fuck off Hurrianko, I bet you're still just as miserable 8 years later.

HS counselors are garbo. They have this belief that you need to know what you wanna do as a career the moment you leave high school. They also try and "guide" you towards various careers based on tests and school performance. They push college degrees like it's a sale on prime day. Fucking jokes. The one thing I've learned is you can still do anything you want in college, as long as your grades are good enough to get in. Professional schools don't care about HS, but rather your college performance in prereqs. You can still make a darn good living without a college degree or by learning a trade.

If the school pothead got inspired one night watching planet earth and wants to get his PhD in marine biology then encourage him. If woflowz wants to be a ski bum and then figure out his life, who cares. I'm so sick of this mold everyone thinks we should all fit into. Society acts like most college kids don't spend 3 years dicking around, broke as a joke, and tens of thousands in debt before they figure their life out.

I dinna even gradiate hs meez not a scholarly learn-Ed individial but I just kept doing what made me happy, used that to make others happy and one day BOOM! You seem creative and personable stick with the happy thing I imagine one day you’ll do well, even if that only means being happy, in the end that’s most valuable, shame so much happiness requires money but you’ll get it your young, options are still limitless, stay headstrong,do think about how your gonna do you in the future but don’t over dwel, LIVE, use those counselors opposing words as fuel, take what you can from it and move on.

@WoFlowz you need to take a gap year and its fucked your counselor didn't suggest it. Bum it for a year and see how it goes. Could be great and theres a chance you could find out more of what you want out of life. Maybe that includes college maybe not. Make sure you find some sort of backup or long term career to make money tho cause you do not want to be poor in this country when youre 50+

Work a trade job. Work your ass off in the summer and then take more days off in the winter. No debt either. Plus you won’t be scratching for pennies, you’ll have something to fall back on when you wanna buy a house or a new car or something.

I’d rather ski 4 days a week and make decent money than ski 7 days a week and be broke as a mf then have my life get thrown down the shitter when I can’t ski everyday anymore.

I'm super into robotics, and I can confirm that's the type of kid that goes into engineering. They're smart, have zero social skills and are all incredibly awkward. Im one of the 3 kids in our state who compete who can actually have a conversation with someone else.
