Nah sounds like he’s talking about snowcat operators, which are probably some of the lowest paid equipment operators in the US compared to how complex the machines are. Good luck breaking 20 an hour unless you can run literally everything (zaugg, winch, etc) and have been there for years

Ive worked fast food and it’s not way worse than working at a mountain as you put it. Yeah it’s not fun but it’s also not physically exhausting work. Lifties, park crew, cat ops, lift maintenance etc all get paid dog shit wages and are usually busting their asses for 8+ hours a day. Resorts can be pretty shitty but fast food is not that hard either. regardless of whether you think it’s a stretch or not, paying people minimum wage in some of the most expensive towns across the country is asinine when corporations like vail and powdr are raking in over a hundred million annually.

It's a step in the right direction. Not a very big step, but at least it's something. I think we'd rather have the pay bump than nothing at all. Shitty pay leads to understaffing which makes the whole experience worse for everyone

Not sure why people in this thread are mad. This is good news. I think I was making $10 or $11 an hour when I was working at the mountain a few years ago. I've worked in 5 different departments and know people in every other department. Sure, there's rushes around spring break and the holidays but most of the time the work isn't that hard...

Let's be real, they were going to have to pay at least 15 to get staff anyway cause thats just how the labor market is right now and the J1 situation will likely still be pretty shakey once next season roles around. Using the language of raising their min is more PR than anything.

Honestly dude as someone who has grinded things out for a long while in and around a ski town, higher wages don't really help us much when literal neighborhoods of housing are getting buldozed to makeway for lavish modular houses and townhomes. Theres just too many people and not enough beds and our governments don't care because theyre getting loaded

Idk. The ski industry in general is bad on this but there's plenty of verious in the cost of living around the country. A lot of VR places are in the very high cost of living areas.
Gas stations, fast food, etc pays much high than VR in many of those places because that's just what they need to to get employees and have them survive. And barely that.
It sucks that for lifties they'll just rely on J1s that don't care about the wage but just want to come to America and exploit that while boning the local work force.

There are plenty of people working grave shifts for under 13 an hour. Or at least were in the last few years. And that's in some of the resort towns where you can't even afford rent and food for 15.
One of my buddies quit for a couple of years because he could make double or triple what he was making running heavy equipment year round.
There's def some mountains paying better but the industry as a whole is slow.
I made 13 an hour the last time I worked for vail - like what, 10 years ago. Even that was total bullshit for how much extra work I had to do because of understaffing problems and everything else lol.

If the wage they offer is so low and unlivable, no one would work for them, but yet every season skier numbers seem to be up and the lifts are spinning. Go check out their stock price. I personally think they should pay higher wages, but it's hard for me to see how they have any incentive to do so unless they can't staff their resorts. Paying customers seem to be happy with the service provided.

Yeah not really. When all the lifties wuit and they were offering people a 6th day at their wage to run a lift. So you had people that got paid more anyway working OT hours to keep lifts spinning. Some lifts were shut simply because if staffing.
As far as snow cats you can always fill a seat, but a first year person will never be as valuable as someone with more experience.

Pay is not dependant on how 'hard' a job is. It's dependant on how many people are willing to work the position compared to how employees are needed. Labor is subject to the same laws of supply and demand that goods and services are subject to. Park crew pays less than fast food cause more people want to work there so supply exceeds demand, lowering cost.

Generally speaking the harder the job, the less people are able/willing to do it, driving cost (wage) up. At the end of the day supply compared to demand drives wages just like it does cost of goods.

Quantity of labor supplied is also affected by the same components that define typical demand, the taste of the worker comes into play here… workers are less willing to work an intensive unskilled labor job for the same wage as they can work a less intensive unskilled labor job. You’re misconstruing supply and demand here.
