Fellow tele skiers, give me your thoughts

I had the idea the other day for a new telemark boot-binding system. The boots would have a 75mm “duckbill” and be able to attach a cable on the back of the boot, but the boot would also have a NTN 2nd heel under the boot.

the boot would also have tech fittings

The bindings for this system would be a standard 75mm cable binding, TTN and other tech-tele bindings, and NTN bindings with 75mm toe pieces.

this system would make a single pair of boots be compatible with both 75mm AND NTN bindings, being the ultimate system. I call it UTN or Universal Telemark Norm.

First of all, would this work? What do you guys think about it?

Seems rather complicated, I’d just be happy for a lightweight ntn boot with tech fitting and good ROM.

have you seen the tech toe cable bindings some guys run?

It would be complicated to shift from the current systems, but in the end it would be one boot being compatible for every tele binding on the market

I agree though. Most ntn boots are kinda heavy it would be nice to see more lighter stuff

Bishop bindings are getting there, they're compatible with 75mm and NTN, but both models attach with a heel lever like a cable system. Apparently they ski really well.

Dont you have to send the binding to bishop for them to switch it to the other system though?

It wouldnt work. Straight up.

the tech fittings are too narrow to fit on your standard 75mm boot... and if you were to cut it down to fit, it would narrow everything out. Not ideal.

The a big reason for the NTN boot was to use an AT standard for the toe welt

Personally, I would be a lot more happy if they just fully standardized the NTN system - as it is, Scotts sometimes have compatability issues with certain NTN bindings. lots of of play in the duckbutt on the Outlaw X or Lynx etc.

75mm has its place, but we have to remember... its a nordic norm. It was the norm when Telemark was literally just cross country skis and leather boots. As far as any caring about compatability with 75mm, those days are well and truely over, and its only a matter of time before the powers that be start phasing out their 75mm gear alltogether.

gotta face it... NTN is the future and that is completely ok. If you want to stick with your 75mm, that's fine but you might want to pick up a couple pairs of T1/T2 or Voodoos or XPs while there is still fresh stock out there.

For some reason I thought the introduction of NTN would shift things much more quickly than it has. I started with 75mm because it's what I had access to, but I can see myself switching to a set of Lynxes when my current boots bite the dust. That might be in a few years still so in the meantime I'm glad both modes are still produced and I could get Axl parts if I needed them.

I only have been on tele 1 season but I will say that from my experience NTN will allow a lot more progression and get a lot more people into the sport. Some of my friends are hesitant about tele because of potential knee injuries, but with the advancement in gear and tele bindings actually releasing(sometimes) I think people will feel better about switching

I mean, NTN came out at about the same time that Alpine Touring really started taking off, so it always had to compete with that. It's really only been a little over a decade since it was introduced, and it really hadn't been solidified in the industry since maybe 10-11 years ago.

I still use 75 gear, but I definitely see myself switching in the next few years as NTN absolutely allows you to drive bigger badder skis.
