These were all taken on a like 10yearold nikon coolpix. I don’t think you need a crazy long lense but my newer d5300 with a 300mm lense definetly makes it easier to get decent or rly good photos

Imo a shorter telephoto like that is great for wildlife and action shots too without breaking the bank, would recommend unless you're really looking for that 300+ long boi.

you'll wanna use a planner to find out what location/angle/time is going to be best. photopills is pretty great for this, not sure if there's free alternatives.
Ideally you're at +300mm focal length, otherwise it won't be very big. You could look into teleconverters to help though.
I tried a handful of times over the years to get this specific summer shot but was always skunked by weather, low horizon clouds, or being away from Burlington during full moons. Thankful that everything finally aligned a ~month ago for September's full moon
I took this shot (one shot of foreground and one shot of moon). The moon was shot at 105mm, so you don't really need a crazy telephoto lens. I also found that the moon is easier to shoot in the early morning hours/dawn. There's less contrast so the moon or sky won't be blown out.
