Honestly wouldnt be too surprised if chairlift/team incidents become more common. Aging infrastructure at mountains that dont pay employees well so it's hard to keep good knowledgable people. Plus I'm sure a lot of resorts are just as stingy when it comes time to shell out money to fix aging lifts.

Italian media say that apparently there were two malfunctions: the first was the breakage of the traction cable which caused the uncontrolled descent of the cable car towards the valley and the second was the inactivation of the emergency brakes which didn't engage and led to the fatal crash.
Authorities are investigating also taking into consideration the possibility that it may have been a manslaughter caused by poorly maintenance checks, we'll see.
But IMO there are 2 TERRIFYNG facts:
The first is the duration of the tragedy. The accident lasted about 10 interminable seconds:
Try to count from 1 to 10. You have all the time necessary to become fully aware of what's happening, of what will happen to you, to your lover, to your children.
And the second are the circumstances.
Consider that here in Italy sunday was the first day of reopening of the cable cars after more than a year of stop. Think of these poor families who died on the first day of vacation and "freedom" after a long and difficult lockdown (one of the victims was celebrating his birthday).
Italian skier here. Just read an article about it. The owner and 2 others confessed that they manipulated the emergency break system because the cable car was blocking itself sometimes. So to ensure that it wouldn't stop on the busy weekend they just turned it off...
When the only thing in your mind is making money and not the safety of others...
It's already a tragedy, but I would have never thought of such a thing like these 3 people decided to do...

I'm glad that they moved fast arresting these guys. Now do the same thing for Boeing officials who knew about the issues on the plane that caused 2 crashes.
