Surviving College

I am a graduating high school student this year and going to University of Kentucky next year to study Civil Engineering. I ski a lot and have no idea how I will get on my skis while im there, though I will do it somehow. Anyways, the actual point to this thread is asking for advice on how I can survive going off for my freshman year of college.

Learn to say no to people. A lot of good students get sucked into the social aspect of college (which in moderation is great) at the expense of studies. You don't have to accept every invite to every event. Find friends who respect your decisions in that regard. Looking back to who was around after freshman year and who was not this is a big factor. In terms of work, on campus jobs are pretty great. Sure you could make more elsewhere but then you have to factor in a commute and that job will not be as willing to work around your class schedule.

TLDR learn how to manage your time.

Rule 1: Go to class and do your homework. If you follow rule 1, you'll do just fine. Like rookie said, on-campus jobs are so much better than off-campus for a bunch of reasons. If you need to work to support yourself, try to snag one. Last of all, have fun! College is a time to branch out, try new things, meet cool people, and figure out who you want to be in life. It sounds cliche but it's true. As long as you follow rule 1, make the most of your time there and have fun!

Go to class, do your homework, go to TA sessions / office hours or w/e. They will give you questions so similar to the exams in those it'll be easy. Do an internship. Boom. You will then be employable in a town near bomb skiing with a 7 month season and be able to go all the time and life will be great. Plus in college there is so much fun stuff to do you won't be miserable without skiing. Once you are an adult and life is boring AF you gotta live near skiing else you'll just drown yourself in alcohol and play video games and waste away.

Stress management is a huge part of the schooling that prepares you to career life. You will have to balance workload and skiing.
Going through marine engineering school taught me that. I made it quite important to go skiing and when to double down on schoolwork. Dont worry, it was fun

Don't go out 5 days a week or be fucking around drugs when you have deadlines.
Bang that shit out in 4 years and minimize debt.
Get an internship every summer to get a sense of different workplaces.

Pick your roommates wisely after you finish your freshman year. I know in the dorms it's kind of a gamble of having a bad roommate and a good one so that's not your choice. But sophomore year and on, room with kids who have good majors and are serious about academics. It also really helps to room with kids who are in your major or program whether it's business or engineering etc. I lived with 3 guys and we were all business majors so the study sessions were effective because we would all combine notes work on spreadsheets together etc.

As far as freshman year goes the dorms are pretty hectic, kids are always coming by to knock on your door and see what's up. If you need to study just go to the library silence your phone and grind. Studying in the dorms is tough because your friends are always around. Find your spot in the library and spend a lot of time there.

Last but not least, go to every class. Ask questions, attend office hours get to know your TA and professors. They are so much more graceful to you if they can put a face to a name. This is extremely important in the massive 200+ kid classes you have as an underclassmen.

1. If you ski don't go to Kentucky
2. Drink beer fast and frequently
3. As an engineer also in school (minor in civil major in ocean) TAKE SUMMER CLASSES easy A's more time in the winter and if you wanted could finish faster and move on with your life.
4. Make a shit ton of friends but none of them will be your friends in two weeks
5. don't get blackout your first couple nights
6. All the hot bitches join sororities get friendly with them asap so you got the bitches on your side and they take you to parties
7. Be on top of classwork at first you think you have freedom but you really don't and you get behind fast
8. Hopefully your ra is a homie like mine remember they're students to and like to do the same shit if you make there job easy you can get away with shit unless they're a tightass.
9. don't date people especially freshmen year (your their for brews and hoes)
10. Make friend in your major form study groups it will alleviate lots of stress when your all getting fucked together with school and its a great way to meet people and be more efficient at getting work done.

get involved with clubs/organizations/extracurriculars you care about. there may not be skiing but maybe there's a climbing gym(?), mtn bike club, idk what it is you like to do. just meet people but you gotta take the initiative

and don't freak out and drop out if you're like a month in and feel like you haven't made any friends.

#3 on this especially, bang out easy gen eds at a community college online for cheap. I did this every summer of my electrical engineering undergrad and it allowed me to take an average of 12-14 credits a semester. The time commitment for online gen eds at a CC is a joke. Honestly was only like 2 hours per week per class. This allows for more time to party.

Also find a group of people to get a house to move out of student housing as soon as possible. You will save so much money as a result. My school required 2 years of dorm living if you had a scholarship but you could easily get out of the requirement with a waiver. My old roomates and I had a house lined up for our 2nd year by November of our first year. Staying off campus my 2nd year instead of the dorms saved me about $9k.

No Ohio. Got quite a bit of scholarships and have good grades and test scores. Plus loans. I’m going to have quite a bit of debt but not as much as one would think. I’ve also had good luck with crypto so lots of that profit is paying off my college. Plus I have a lot of credits paid off already with dual enrollment. I have my CCNA so i can work if need be for more than just a part time worker.

Thats cool. I still would suggest finding whatever civ eng program you can thats cheap. Theres gotta be some good programs in ohio schools. If you really wanna rack debt to go to kentucky then its up to you but in ten years there will be literally nobody who considers college worth more than 5k a semester. Everything you learn in college you can learn from the internet and a maybe a few choice textbooks.

Can't believe I'm gonna agree with Dolan, stay in state for school. The only thing that matters for engineering is internships and co-ops which you can easily get if you have any sort of social/personable skills. Extra debt that has zero edge is just stupid.
