Gyro_NightsI am building a mold in the 160-170cm length range and with rocketed tips and tails If anyone in Edmonton or nearby would like to buy some for 200$ please contact me. I can do costume top sheets and the cores will be poplar. It will have proper bases and triaxial fibreglass.

Totally agree man I think it’s super cool I was just playin, if I could do it I would. I was also harassing Folsom yesterday, idky, was just in a mood to fuck with folks, and I don’t think bad of Vishnu either, I actually know nothing of them first hand, would like to try their park skis some Day, you know, when I stop shredding good skis like moments 😉

Do I need to put inserts into the poplar core? I heard it is a softer wood and pullouts happen.

Inserts are for snowboards. Stringers or titanal plates are the way to go.

re: cheap resin, if it’s cheap, it won’t last. Don’t skimp because your skis will explode

I found a custom ski store based in canada that will sell you materials for single pairs of skis http://thoroughbredskis.ca/materials-store/

Their choices are a bit limited though compared to junk supply.

If you want thick edge and bases for park skis I'm happy to sell a pair of skis length to you, they would likely ~$40us for shipping too though, so not lots different from junk supply.

I also have to order some more materials for a pair of prototypes soon, likely from junk supply, so if that place above doesnt have what you want I can see about shipping things on along with base and edge if you want them.

a local sawmill is an alright place to get cheap core hardwood if you are happy to glue strips together for cores yourself.

as for glass, carbon and resins, there are fibreglass supply companies all over the place, if you cant find one, a boat chandlery supply store usually carry these things (which you'll likely have to look in BC to find one given ABs geography).

Most of the time poplar is used in cores, its used as a lightweight/soft (almost filler) core wood and you pair it with strips of a hardwood like maple, beech, oak or ash for some rigidity and good screw retention. An addtional layer of glass on the top of the ski in the binding area helps with screw retention too.

As for resins, there are so many for different uses from many brands which do and don't ship to places, its hard to suggest one. I'd suggest getting some from the link above, I assume its what they use and they'll have done the hard work finding a suitable resin for skis.

Its a shame that the ski builders walkthrough isn't visible on their site right now, I found it super helpful for getting a handle on the process when i started on my first pair.

Honestly my advice for a first time build is don't try and run before you can walk. getting into building your own core makeup and getting fancy in other parts is creating more chances for something to go wrong and you end with with no skis at all.
My first pair had no sidewalls, no tip spacer, just bases, edges edge tape, triax glass, ash core that went end to end & edge to edge, fibreglass on top and a wood veneer topsheet that i varnished, all held together with a resin I got from the ski materials supplier. They worked surprisingly well for how simple they were and taught me the basic skills. I then tried to run on my second pair, not knowing how much i had still to learn and they've never been skied because of issues i had (look great on the wall though).
I built maybe 5 pairs after that before I even considered selling skis to fully understanding friends, then another 15 pairs before approaching a factory to make it into a business.

Also the skis themselves and the materials in them are just one part of the process, the mold, how you press them and then the finishing after are all just as important to understand.
