Hood for 2 months this summer. Where to live/camp?

Have never made it to hood, was gonna buy the spring pass but just got a job there this summer. Going to be there early June to mid August.

Is it worth trying to find a place to rent or should I just camp it. I have to move out from crystal while I'm gone so my car will be full of stuff. But I have a tent and stuff.

Idk, any advice would be sweet. Stoked to get some laps in this summer!

I mean i basically jist have some clothes my guitar, banjo, eletric. A drum and snowboard gear. Not selling any of that though.


I'm already out west i live at crystal. But yeah im not going to have room to car camp. Not getting rid of the few things i have

For sure. Was thinking if making some calls midweek to aee whats in enumclaw. Figure i could buy a couple of bins to try and keep shit clean and mice free. Might even be able to convince a friend to hild onto a couple bins and my winter tires.

It helps that im def lined up for next season and the 2 places aren't super far apart. I think prices around here for storqge might be reasonable.


For future reference is it possible to park a small camper around hood? Was thinking of getting a truck a camper. Everyone lives in trailers at crystal and if hood seems like something i want to keep doing it might be sweet.

I didnt realize how cheap trailers were.



Obviously tahoe isnt much help for tha other than maybe boca. But being able to fir sure rock a trailer at crystal has my interest. Would be col to have a "home" and a place to store my stuff. If i leave the country i could park the whole thing in a lot or storage spot or a friends.

Camping with a tent at Hood is super easy and as long as you are resourceful about bathing tents are absolutely no problem. There's a million spots to camp all within 15 mins of Timberline, my advice would be to check out free campsites.net and you can see where all the popular dispersed camping spots are near the highway/etc.

I'll check em out. In the northeast at any if the spots i was uhaul had some of the most expensive storage.

If you've got a tent that can withstand heavy rain and/or are down to sleep in car as needed then there are a ton of places to camp near hood. If you drive 30 minutes toward Portland or Hood River you should be able to find nice camp sites easily. Last time I was there we stayed for a couple nights half way between T-Line and Hood River and a few near Rhododendron.

We were there around the end of May, so I'm not sure how crowded these spots get in the summer.

The airstrip just before lake trillium is my summer condo. 10 min from Timberline. 2 min from Government Camp. Walking distance to trillium. Usually lots of like minded folks camping and raging.

Lots of people have been camping on the Kiwanas Camp Rd (road 39). Its still pretty snowy up high, so trillium isn't open yet but you can parking lot camp in the Snow Bunny or White River snoparks. Road 27 has some dope spots but need 4x4 the good spots are a ways from the highway. Also Road 630 (between little jon snopark and sherwood campground towards Hood river) has some cool camping spots for free too but the sign was blank last week so maps it ahead of time.

If you get there in June, get a good spot on west leg rd. theres plenty midweek, but claim before the weekends. Just make sure you move spots ever 16 days for forest service regs. and get the $30 annual pass and by god pick up your trash!

If you want a roof over your head, call HR at Tline and try to get on a wait list for employee housing. idk what their status w that is these days but HR will.

was out there last week and a couple weeks before. Parks are still firing lower mountain. below the park is too sticky to enjoy. Palmer and mile and OB west were great in the afternoon. Have fun!

This is the move. I live in a bigger van now but before I did I was living in a smaller van and I just had a storage unit for $45 a month. It's cheap enough and a good place to keep things you won't need. You could just do that and car camp it in Govy or even at the hill. Then once it opens if it does, I don't know the situation out there this summer, camp at trillium. There are good spots down the hill, Lolo Pass, Kiwanis Camp Road, the graveyard, but you'll be spending money on gas doing that commute everyday. Good luck to yah, enjoy it out there.

It's going to be quite wet until late June/early July. It isn't like this every year but from the many springs & summers I and friends have spent up there it's pretty safe to assume you're going to get a good amount of precipitation during the month of June.
If you have tarps and a method to dry your gear camping isn't a bad option. But if you value being somewhat dry at all I would look into some sort of housing. Camping on the Hood River side of the mountain will be more dry than the Portland side. The weather is generally better on that side of the mountain.
Best of luck to you. I am a firm believer that every ski/snowboard enthusiast needs to spend time on Mt. Hood in the summer. It's and experience you'll never forget or regret.

Eh not really. I need to play it more. It's kind of fucked up(got it this way( might try and get it fixed or trade towards a better one so I can play it more often. Generally end up playing my acoustic guitar.



Also thanks for all the helpful advice people. A lot of good info in here. Def seems like leaving some shit in storage near me in WA and then building a little bed frame for the sub is the move to stay dry. If I find some housing that'd be sweet. I'm getting put on the waiting list for employee shit but the contact person for that isn't back till tuesday.

But yeah regardless pretty stoked to finally make it to hood for a summer. Sucks I'm 100 years old now but I'm sure I'll have fun.

This. I camped there a few years ago in mid May to late May. It was a low snow year though so it was open early. The next year I went out it was closed during that time and I don't recall when it reopened. The airstrip is dope though. I also camped out somewhere closer to rhododendron/welches area sort of on the way to little hawaii. I kind of forgot exactly where it is but it seemed pretty popular if anyone might know more specifics lol. Kind of a lot of tweakers though so I def prefer the airstrip lol

My plan is to camp at the airfield, but I’m driving out with a friend in his van who’s splitting off. Any ideas how big of an issue theft might be? I’m gonna be driving my motorcycle with a ski rack to and from hood, so I don’t know how realistic it’d be for me to pack up my entire camp and leave it lashed to the cargo rack in the timberline parking lot, and I won’t have any real place to lock things up. I’m gonna have a trunk with a lock but realistically someone could just throw it into a truck bed and steal it in 3 min :(

I wouldnt leave anything you would be heartbroken to lose.
I usually keep all my ski gear, electronics, and nice camping stuff in my car.
Never heard of allot of left at the airstrip but there are enough tweakers in the Hood area to weaken my trust.

Very good call, you think I’d get stuff jacked off the back of my bike from the tline lot during the day? I’ll just have a gas can and a pretty inconspicuous crate of gear. I’m gonna try and have a pretty minimal setup, should be able to fit my valuables in my backpack that I’ll take up the lift.

I feel like the parking lot is safe. Personally haven't had issues and haven't heard of any during my times there. That's just me though

I've had enough stuff stolen to not take risks. Make it harder for the theif is my motto.

There is a gated self storage down behind the Brightwood Tavern next to the little post office. Not really convenient if you're camping up on the mountain or down towards Hood River. But it's an option.

Happy you’re finally getting out there @Saga. Hit it on the head though, further you get from Portland the dryer it will be and be equipped and mentally prepared to be wet if you’re car camping. It’s not so bad the first 3 weeks, but June weather can be brutal car camping after skiing all day or working on T Line. I haven’t worked up there but have spent two months in my car and it was an amazing time but also testing. You’re going to be wet if camping and finding dry wood to burn from the intensely moist Mt. Hood national forest is not easy. We got into a routine of skiing from 10-1 relaxing in hood parking lot letting gear dry 1-3 then going to camp for food/rest. Be aware of the weather forecasts and know where you’re going to put all your stuff that is inevitably going to get damp to some degree.
Overall though every aspect of it is fun in one way or another, you learn how to deal with things out of you’re control and really focus and appreciate skiing in a different aspect. Mt. Hood is my favorite place on earth the people you will meet with the same burning passion will live with you for a long long time. Enjoy all of it

I bet a mobile shower/laundry service would kill it in the spring/summer. I have been absolutely nauseated riding lifts with some people in the spring.

Also T-line dropped their mask requirement for guests this past weekend. Go get that goggle tan.

Been camping, weather was shitty all last weel but this weel is supposed to be sick, who knows after that.

If it stays sumny the camping is pretty mellow. Lots of spots all over

Sick I’m headed up for a couple weeks to camp in my Outback, maybe in a tent. Is there a good crew camp developing anywhere?

Idk what else is out there. More gypsy trailer park vibes at the airstrip.

I'm camping with a few park crew guys. Not sure where I'll move to next. Just kinda winging it. Hopefully it's not too fucked to find spots later in the summer.

Did somebody actually say this or is this just some weird commentary because someones mad that there are too many diggers?

FTC parks start up soon so that will split the crew between the new stuff and existing stuff.

I don't know what the snow situation/park is usually like so I can't really comment. Haven't been on the hill in a week because I got hurt but I think they put in a couple more rails, everything was riding good at least.

People are always going to be whiny haters. It's always been that way. Even if the park is the sickest shit ever itll never please everyone. Somebody's favorite rail isnt in, or its a down instead of a flat, etc.

Park is a pipe, 3 jump line, set of 4 maybe 5 now tiers of rails 2 wide. Nothing crazy but it's fun. Maybe it was better last year or 5 years ago, or 150 years ago, but calling out people with a rake and throwing shade like that is pretty whack. Most people get that.

Ain't nobody got time for that shit.

Nice! I'm sure it will get more ghetto at some point this summer. Might be fucked up after the soltice party but we usually have had a small fire and some beers every night. We're right in the middle across from the pick and pull looking site with all the vehicles and tools.
