my 4runner is big and has big tires so I get shitty gas mileage and i’m sick of it for city driving when i’m not skiing or biking...but i’m still keeping it. i’ve been looking at 2013-2016 328i/328xi with around 75k miles. willing to spend around 16k, but that could go up if necessary.
we have a full covered and heated garage, air tools, etc, my roommate has built a couple track cars so he’s mechanically inclined.
danbrownlol skiierman you know I ain’t got tesla money. also, I miss you! maybe come down here and hang out one night after steve moves in to the new spot
Is skierman an asshole irl too? Or what?
Ns should have a utah meetup
BMWs are fun but used car prices are crazy right now
You bet I have a BMW... two right now. Have owned 4 (flex).
I daily this 01 e46 325xi and i have racks on it for the winter. Super fun car, easy to work on, lots of aftermarket support and parts. The F3x's (2013-2018 3-series) are sick cars, and (most) are twin turbo'd 4 cylinders so they actually get pretty good mileage while remaining fast and sporty.
I will say, beware the xdrive systems if thats what you're looking for. They're amazing in the snow and bad weather, but they can be needy. Must have a square setup (same size wheels all around), and your tires have to be the same size and if possible tread pattern, or it can make the xdrive system angry and even fail prematurely.
All that being said, if you have the pockets to buy into a BMW, and then afford the typical maintenance, you will not regret owning one. Huge fan base and lots of forums to help with any questions that you might have, and the customer base is usually pretty loyal and invested.
Good luck guy, hopefully that helped you in your decision.

thank you, that did help a lot. i’m not looking for an x drive model, actually seeking a non x drive model because I already have a car that’s meant to be driven in the snow. however, it does seem like 80% of the cars i’ve seen are x drive, there aren’t a ton of regular rwd 328s. I do have the pockets, not looking to dive too deep and have a couple extremely mechanical friends. thank you again for the input, that’s what I was looking for!
I have an e46, it has been one of my favorite cars I've owned. I do all my wrenching though, you're in the right school of thought to do maintenance yourself. I don't know much about the newer models, but I get 30mpg+ on the highway no problem and around 28mpg combined driving. With the sport package it handles incredible and with the creatue comforts it is really a treat to drive.
I say go for it, if I had a pocket full of cash I'd have many e46's.
running a pretty clapped out 2006 jeep cherokee but she still purrs like a kitty even though I beat the hell out of it and don't service it enough.
REALLY want that Chevy or GMC 1500 w the z71 lift/offroad kit, could almost pull trigger but I'm really trying to save for a real estate investment so imma run this jeep till she croaks.
Was somewhat disappointed by the Tesla truck, like yeah the mars rover/halo warthog vibe is kinda cool, but when tf are we gonna see the pickup market get on the battery program?? Like where is the battery powered taco/tundra/silverado/f-150, you're telling me they can do an 18 wheeler but not a pickup??
At the end of the day it depends how much joy it would give you. To buy a car like that, ideally you are already open to embrace maintenance bills knowing at the end of the day it's still worth it, but any car can break too so don't overthink it just might be more expensive. Love my 340i, getting it back from the shop this week with a huge turbo and huge fueling system. Stuff definitely might break but I can't think of a more fun daily driver/mountain car

That's not BMW/Xdrive specific, that's general AWD maintenance. Maybe transfer case costs more on a BMW than Subaru so people stress about it more, but definitely not BMW specific

Old Audi with torsen diffs and 4WD/AWD Toyotas and even newer VW haldex systems don't fail like Subie diffs. Subie diffs transfer cases axles etc are super fragile and sensitive.
Dude ive been trying to get an E93 N54 335i/s for like 5 years. One was posted in Virginia like a day ago got sold before pics were even posted it’s so crazy
qazwsxedc342008 BMW M3 E93 is the only bmw I'll drive. 8000+ rpms.
Yes I do. 2017 3 series M sport x drive estate(wagon) turbo diesel. I am currently in the UK and the diesel models are very popular here. I do enjoy driving it when my wife isnt driving it.

Or the e92. Orange edition with carbon fiber toof top and black rims.
2.) E92 M3 v8 2008 - 2010 ; 8300 RPMS!! Probably the funnest BMW and 2nd best sounding behind E60 M5 v10. They also has the environmentally safer ones which came out in 2011

Spoke too soon. Everything is done (except i think im going to have a bracket made to re-use EWG), but either car doesn’t like running PWG, or my new HPFP already shit out.
idk if ill ever get this finished. Last project car i swear (doubtful)
I rented a M4 convertible in Los Angeles—6mt, matte riviera blue, coral red interior. So stunning. I could never blame anyone for buying one. Even if that color isn’t your style, they have such great other color options—red on white, brown on blue... They can be great choices if you’re trying to be fashionable.
DolansLebensraumOne of my younger brothers just got a 2016 m4.
i told him to save his tesla money but hes an idiot so what can you do.
Went by the shop today, took better picture. We’re getting the HPFP replaced out of warranty, thinking it must have failed shortly after first startup.
mods:
fueling (my pride and joy): stage 2 HPFP, stage 3 LPFP (i think it’s a dual 340/450 connected to hobbs switch), port injection with 750cc injectors, Motiv ReFlex controller, ethanol analyzer tuning e85 and 91 octane we’ll see if/when maps can scale themselves
turbo is a 67mm Borg Warner EFR9174. going to need better clutch, and driveshaft (as guy above said, b58 fucksss so much so they have the issue of blowing driveshafts under light mods)
should have posted all that into cars/build thread, but to OP
tl;dr I’ve already hacked up the car and warranty because i decided this is a car for life and am ready to deal with any amount of $$ fuckery because it’s worth it.
so it depends on your lifestyle

Is that enough injector for your power goals and e85?
Yea tuner said would be plenty, i think i heard someone say good for 800-900hp. Keep in mind, this is just in addition to the direct injection so theres two sets of injectors and the st2 HPFP pushes 2x the fuel on the DI side.
If you pick too big of injector spray patterns suffer. And i just get this fear of cylinder wash with all that e85 so wanna stay optimal. But no walnut blasts for this guy

Ooooh i gotcha. I completely spaced that the newer cars are direct injection. I remember reading about the 60,000 mile or whatever service that involves media blasting the intake valves lmao jesus christ. The secondary port injection really sounds like the move. 8-900 is no joke man holy shit. Thing's gonna blow the tires off at like 100mph if you let it

4.) E60 M5 v10 2005; one of the best sounding cars by far; 100,000 dollar car you can get with warranty now for like 20,000, if that.
5.) CS M2 2020; agile and quick
6.) M3 1990's
7.) E46 M3 or CSL M3 2003 - 2006

And if you're gay and want an electric motor with an automatic with fake sound pumping through speakers getting 33 miles per each charge, then this:
Gay.) i8 Roadster
The v10 era of m5’s were cool but i heard they had reliability issues which is why bmw dumped them in favor of turbo v8s. V8s seem to just work great. Porsche obviously knows their way around a flat 6 but from all the reading ive done v8 turbos just seem to work great. V12s to my knowledge are better than v10s but get crushed by v8 turbos in mpg.
skiermanGet a Tesla, you climate change denying piece of ignorant white trash.
Wasn’t it said that electric cars are just as bad for carbon emissions because making the battery takes about the same amount of carbon emissions as the life of a normal car?
