Stuff in Canada always cost more when its luxury items.
Buying local has a few extra perks. It help you build a name for yourself and get to know the people working at the shop. Your repairs can be prioritised because of good customer reputation and friendships. Theres somthing pretty awesome when you walk into a shop, high 5 the owner as hes trying to sell a 7,000$ bike to a Karen.

I for sure have an addiction to gear. I’m honestly afraid to total up how much I’ve spent this past season. Especially since I’ve got a wedding to pay for this year. Probably could’ve paid it with half what I spent on ski gear.

SavageBiffWell, I had a stock of it, and yes I still buy it, I wax once pre season(2 coats), maybe a 2nd time mid season, possibly but unlikely a 3rd on my most used skis, then again for storage. I’ve read multiple reports, it’s ok, it’s bad so idk but I’m not against not using it anymore, but I can feel the difference for sure, no doubt there, and I don’t see racers entitled to use it but not “us”, outlaw it for all or none.

In regards to stone grinds, seems like you ski a lot, but so do I and haven’t needed base grinds, are you grinding older skis, or is it cause your buddies use so they get more use than I think? Do you ski boiler plate %90 of the time?

For edge sharpening do you like really sharp? I kinda like em used... a lil worn down except on my carving skis. Is there an angle you like for looser more free riding style? I’m looking to learn more about edges, I’d like to pay a tuner but last time I gave my local the work he turned my stocklis into ultra carver so asked for a freestyle angle 🤷🏼‍♂️

I don’t think it’s necessary to spend lots to be considered hardcore, I think a hardcore skier
1-skis regardless of conditions
2-skis a ton
3-can ski basically anything
4-lives affected by the sport and possibly revolves around it.
5-gets injured still skis
6-skis shit they know they’re not good enough yet to

I'm about as obsessive about waxing as @Greg_K is about his edges :p

For spring/summer skiiing now I will hotwax before every time I ski , and spraywax & rub during lunch. I *hate* the damn drag on snow, once you ski a proper waxed & setup ski with a good base, you dont go back to slow grey bases. For new skis some skis basicly comes UNWAXED, all skis, including park will just be much better if you do some heat cycles on them when new with a baseprep or soft wax, then later a harder wax.

There is 0 point to useing HF as baseprep or seasonal wax, it doesnt last very long, more frequent cheap waxes will be better. but HF in spring? ohhhhhhhh yes, thats the stuff.

I stone grind new skis the most! its just sad how many are just not flat! also for setting up edges, sometimes a ski will have like a 2 degree base bevel and your just fucked you need to grind to reset it. I got my gf k2 90c skis, its between 0.3 and 2 degrees base, side was as bad.. also got her some fischers, with railed base edge high variable, so when I tuned them, she couldnt ski straight! it would constantly try to turn, this was masked when she got the, and edges were pretty dull... + more snow so really didnt need the edges.

You will also need a stone grind if the brass roto can't bring your bases to take wax again after abuse/baseburn/other. or just damage to base.

This year we had less snow, and more + during day and - at night, but, I think we had 1-2 months with steady snow conditions and -10 to -20, then you didnt need a supersharp edge, but when its refrozen for those morning runs you want SHARP edges. I like sharp edges in general for anything that wont hit rails. we had boiler plate 1 time last season, and its rare, we are not west coast, but we are definetly not east coast! heck it snowed here yesterday.

After my last knee injury I haven't been able to ski much park this season, so I've spent my time railing groomers & pow when available, a few jumps (with steep landings) Not beeing able to ski at all due to injury, you find much appreciation just beeing able to ski at all.

I can claim the "still skis" after injuiry, I could barely walk again without crutches when I went skiiing again, and boy did that shit hurt, also I would not reccomend it. Ironicly my *other* knee is now hurting more, than the damaged one, because it has taken the stress of the other probably... really really smart. Ohh and shoulder still doesnt really work after landing on rail with it on nov/desember... ohh well!

ski anything? noop I suck at skiiing fast in supertight trees, also suck at skiiing 100% whiteout


I was always superstoked when it snowed as a kid, still am.

This past season I have spent a big 0. It snowed enough where I am at 2 different times to build a jump at the park in my backyard. Didnt spend any cash on travels/gas because I was just able to walk to the park. A few seasons ago, I did spend about 20K US for a new ACL and MCL though. Am I hardcore?

3 season passes to different hills - 150€/piece

2 trips to Lapland - 500€/piece including flights, accomodation and lift tickets

Destroyed 3 pairs of old skis in 2 months so had to upgrade pretty hard this year.

-Ikon and local memberships $800

-$1500 on local hotels for consecutive day trips as “local hills” are 3 hours away
-$500 gas travelling to hills
-$2k-$5k on a trip out West somewhere each year

-Buy/sell a bunch of skis each year if there’s something interesting to try. Doubt I’ll be switching that much this year but I’ve said that before.....
$3k maybe this year minus 2 pairs I’m selling in the fall.

-wax/tools $150 maybe. Use cheap $20 wax blocks but tune and wax daily.

-$200 Stone grinds/binding mounts-grinds needed on most new skis and mounts from skis not bought from Corbetts locally(always get bindings from them worst case) so I have to pay $30 for a mount. (Free if skis/bindings bought there).

-$250 clothing this year

Run a high end car detailing company by myself so I work like crazy mid April to early November and then I’m off the whole winter. Ski every day it’s safe to drive to the hills but not on weekends as it’s too busy usually.

This is going to hurt to type out and probably will be all over the place.

It seems are pretty stuck in your routine but I would to say; I don't know how much you ski but technically you should wax every 4-5 times you ski. Waxing your skis more often is a better alternative than using high quality wax only a few times a season. More wax > high quality wax.

I worked at a resort so passes cost nothing.
Bought 2 pairs of skis this season for a total of
~ $900 CAD including shipping. These should last me a few years though.
I also spent about $500 on outerwear, wax and a few other random things
Bought a GoPro and some accessories for $400, but that will be used year round.
This was a pretty big spending year.
Normally it would be $500 on average.

Skiing in Spain, and having grown up (no lodging cost) 20 minutes from the resorts, i recently calculated an average of 1400 euro per season over the last 6 or 7 seasons, which ranged between 40 and 60 days, with one season in austria with 100+ days. I calculated ski passes, gear, and some gas money split with friends and random people.

I do use other waxes for prep and heat cycles, and I only add fluoro for warmer and wetter days, I’d say my skis get waxed once every 10+ uses, my favs do get more attention not much.

Last year I learned a trick where if you buy last season's Faction Candides in the summer you get them for cheap ($450) and then they'll break within a couple days of use and then they'll send you the current season's pair and you'll have new skis. I've done this twice now and apart from the 2 weeks when I was skiing my rock skis it works perfect.

'20 - '21 Season Expense Report:
Pass - free (debatable, technically it costs me my soul) because I work at the hill.
Skis - $400 on a pair for next season.. total cost this season zero dollars.
Bindings - $50 for some old FKS for the previously mentioned pair of new skis.
Boots - $0 two year old full tilts still going strong for now.. I try to get my boots to last a minimum of three seasons, which is hard when you work in them for 125+ days a season.

So gear and pass wise about $450. Skiing on the cheap is entirely possible, but it is a learned art.

Honestly I think I’m around that, 2x Pa to Co, 1x pa to by/Maine numerous trips to snowshoe ... but I depreciate vehicles come tax time, even my personal vehicles are company owned, so the gas is a write off too 😁

I feel this in my soul

We’ve all been there, there was a time when I struggled to get 3 days a year and one pair of skis had to last years, would frequently browse lodge food to find I was 1 or 2 dollars short and f a burger, it takes time building savings, gear and setup and kinda gets cheaper as the years progress and you learn how to save and be disciplined with spending, it’s like with anything you prioritize, skiings right under the family so a large chunk of my life is dedicated to making that happen, it’s a year round thing.

70 miles from resorts, so 140 round trip, times 50 days.

damn man, thats rough, we have a resort 70miles away... I went there twice, I think its to much of a haul eventhough nice and on same season pass ;D

I can see the slopes from my window here. 10 min in car if traffic lights dont screw me, or shitty people sleeping at them.

Ive got closer resorts, but snowshoe is better than anything local like 7springs etc, and it’s an easy drive @3.25 hrs , we stay if I take family, if I go solo I day trip it
