Is it normal to get depressed at a shitty day in the park

Like how much does it bother you guys if you aren't throwing down as much as the rest of your squad at the park? I always get frustrated as fuck with myself if i'm like the only one who can't nail a trick on a feature. Are most people happy to just be skiing? I can't tell

If you feel like you have to perform at a certain level to be part of a crew it's time for a new crew. Everyone has off days and if the people you are with make those days worse by putting unwanted pressure on you that's a problem.

I don't really have an option to find another crew and I don't wanna just ski alone all of the time. They're not pressuring me to do anything, I just feel like I'm worse than everyone else. There are a couple of newbies who are picking shit up really fast cuz they're already athletic/talented/both and it's frustrating to see them do shit i can't do

I used to ride with a crew that was not as good as me and a crew that blew me out of the water. The crew that was worse than me mostly worked with me. The crew that was better than me had collegiate national champions and some names people on here might recognize. The better crew made me SO much better but I could only keep up for a few laps. They were just that good but being around them made me so much better.
The other crew was just fun/low key.

I def get frustrated though. At this point though, I am asking myself “is it worth ruining a day skiing because you’re so irritated at yourself?”.

Aye we all have off days, sometimes its best to just cruise around and not worry about it. There's always days where not everyone in the crew is trying to throw down, just enjoy the skiing and make the best of it.

I never was really good.in park but there was definitely some days when I was getting mad frustrated with my skiing. However if there's one thing this season taught me Is to be happy with what I have. I live in france, here we haven't skied one single day of the year...it hurts so much. And on top of that we have one of the worst sanitary situation in europe and we're on lockdown until end of may...
I can say that next year every fuckin second I'll be spending on my ski I'll be the happiest person on earth. Can't wait till we get out this nightmare

For reference, I’m a god awful park skier. I can 180 the smallest jumps, do 50-50s on low boxes, and I’ve done maybe 2 360s in my entire life. This season I skied almost all my days with a crew that contained kids who could do 7s, 9s, front and back 8s, and a few who even compete on a semi-professional level. To me, seeing all the shit that they can throw down is just insane. I skied more to spectate and film them than anything! It’s super inspiring, and I never got any shit for not being able to ski like them, they were actually super hyped to have a filmer.

Just keep grinding away. We all have good and bad days. It helps to switch things up for a few days and ride something different to keep the vibe high.
If you can get out skiing (even backyard setup) more often, you'll progress fast

Just have fun.
If you compare too much you will not have any fun.

BTW, I film a lot, and still some folks won't like you.

Yea dawg this shit happens to me I’ve been there, one thing that helped me was taking a break from skiing for a while to try me find some other pasttimes to get into. I just figured if I’m not having fun skiing I should stop wasting my time with it for a while NSR actually try to find something that makes me happier. And the best part is when I’m ready to start skiing again I feel more motivated than I did before I stopped.

Yes but it's also what makes skiers like Henrik Harlaut and Tom Wallisch special. If we were all as good as them, they'd be nobodies. They're remarkable people because of how good they are compared to not only us, but their peers in the upper echelon of freeskiing as well. You can't tell me to not compare myself to others, and I won't stop doing it.

Lol we already have a couple guys in the crew who own a camera. Every week we have a sesh together and people get filmed. Over the past three months I've only had two (lame) tricks get in an edit 💀

Dont get too focused on what tricks are being done, just get stoked on progression. Try to learn a new trick every time you go skiing. Could be anything, new grab, unnatural trick, new swap+270 variation, etc. Also make note of what you friends are trying to learn. If they, or you land something new, get stoked!

I haven’t been skiing too long but can relate from my lifetime of surfing. You’re gonna have those days that you’re off and just straight up bummed.

What I would do in those situations is always ride a more retro shape or maybe even longboard when I wasn’t throwing down on a short board as much as I wanted to. It was fun to just work on my style more on simpler tricks, and slowing it down kind of.

I assume you could do the same skiing, like go somewhere on the mountain you wouldn’t usually or jib something in a way you wouldn’t normally. Or like make a new playlist that just gets you feeling good and go try to be the guy with the steeziest 180 or zero spin.

Your friends might be able to do all the tricks you can, but make it so they can’t do them the same way as you, and you’ll always feel good about that.

Or diversify your hobbies, and find something else that gives you confidence!

this is really not a good mindset to have. everyone has a different progression and bag of tricks, sure comparison is good for those so high up in the sport, but as recreational skiers you gotta accept that you're skiing for fun, not for a cheque. i have the most fun when im just skiing to do things and tricks i like, even if its just shitty non-tricks and repeating a certain trick on every rail. with that mindset i progressed way more in a season and got 100 times more comfortable on skis than i would have otherwise. just gotta go with whatever happens and try to have fun with it as cliche as it sounds

I’m worse than 90% of my crew but they always hype me on when I’m trying to learn simple shit. Riding with chill ass people who are better than you is awesome.


I think it’s human nature that you’re frustrated, no one wants to fail. Just channel that frustration into focus and go back to the basics. Say you’re trying to land a front 4. You keep fucking up. Take a small break and one a front 2 and then a blind 2 and just get confidence that you can land shit and then go back to that front 4 or whatever trick you were trying.

man i feel you, same fucking situation here in italy.
we could have like the best season in years or even ever (a lots of pow since november, in my home resort which isn't even in the alps there is still plenty of snow with temperatures waay below zero and thursday should snow like 10cm). Our fucked politicians closed the resorts 10 HOURS before the opening (which had been postponed to 15 february) with all the sold skipass and everything.

Wanna just kill myself, but for sure next season i'll appreciate skiing like i've never done before.

i feel you on every level - usually then i just find something else like getting a dope shot for the homies as they share their hype and you can kinda safe yourself from stressing out and make the best out of it.

there are good and bad days :)
