Has social media made you retarded?

I feel that ever since I got a smart phone my freshman year of high school, about 7 or 8 years ago, i either developed ADD or it really began to show its affects. I find myself not being able to focus on school work, only stuff that i really have an interest in doing. i also think that social media has created an addict in me, and I find myself picking up my phone whenever i don't have any immediate thing to focus on and just swiping, sometimes even opening an app i just closed just to swipe more and realize "wait wtf i was just on here". Like its muscle memory.
My friends pressured me to get snapchat again (haven't used it for like 5 years now) and i used it for 2 months. Never felt more distracted and like a relied on my phone so much. I try to keep the instagram app off my phone and only use it on the browser to check messages, but i have a hard time staying away from it. Deleted twitter a couple of years ago luckily and have no desire to go back to it.
How many of you feel addicted to a social media, and have you been able to quit it? And how? Im trying to get more control of my brain and my life and i tend to fall back into the same routines and find myself slave to old habits

After scrolling through tik tok for more than 1/2 an hr my brain feels foggy, slow, poisoned, and unfocused.

Its the new colors, visuals, and sounds every 5sec or so. Insta is a little bit better. Super hard for me to stay focused on schoolwork these days. Need help on breaking the habit of just picking up my phone the split second after im not entertained. I wonder if in the future new platforms will become more and more addicting

One thing I did was uninstall FB app. I didn’t delete my account or do some stupid goodbye speech on my wall, just made it slightly more of a hassle for myself to have to deliberately go to Facebook.com and log in. Tended to keep me from compulsively scrolling if I was bored.

I never got a Twitter account, probably a good thing. I moved to a town that has a bunch of community FB groups where people argue over HOA shit and bitch about the City Council meetings. It’s like seriously a really divisive and destructive force in the city. Idk why I am on FB to be honest the more you say it out loud it’s like holy shit this is an awful platform

We might see generational impacts like boomers did with cigarettes. Every kid above the age of 10 has a phone now and they spend absurd amounts of time on apps like Tik Tok. Only time will tell at this point, you can't put the genie back into the bottle

Those local community pages are the worst. Literally everyrhing becomes some huge controversy.

Theres one in my area that helped expose a very high level of chemicals in the town's water supply and is keeping some of the township board members in check which is good. But then there will be ther stuff posted about national politics and everything goes to shit real fast.

I dont have any major social media profile and I can say with confidence that people have become incompentent at social aptitudes and critical thinking.

Maybe thats why I got to smoke so much cannabis, its the only way to relate with others... except they are sober.

The newest generation will have grown up with social media their whole lives and in a college class I took there was a study that stated it has started to effect adolescents dopamine reward structure.

Recently I deleted the Instagram app because it started to feel like an ad wasteland like Facebook did when everyone left that. I think this stems from the change in the algorithm around 6 years ago. In some classes freshman are saying they spend 5+ hours on Tik Tok almost as if they were a battery for the matrix. I am thankful I grew up with the duality of technology and sports.

100% agree. Fuck the smartphone. Great innovation, but I personally believe it does more harm than good for all the reasons you've stated. One thing that has helped me in the past is putting it away during the daytime hours. Like locking it in my car while I go about my day and do coursework and work out. Gave myself a time that I was allowed to go get it, like 8 or 9 PM. Highly recommend. Fuck the smartphone.

I was in HS when instagram was the new kid on the block. Once you figured out that you could film and upload 30 second to 1 minute clips, it was fucking OVER for ski edits on here, im sorry. Never once thought that it would become a legitimate career, being an "influencer" but it is what it is I guess

TikTok is really fucking strange, im sorry. Creeps me the fuck out how easy it is for grown-ass adults to interact with literal children so easy online or even act like a child. Fucked up.

yes. got rid of snapchat finally and ive been happy with that, I pretty much only use Instagram and even then I barely scroll through my feed, I just post when I want and check in on if my friends whenever they post. come a long way since before I was pretty addicted to both ig and snap in high school

I've gotten to the point where if I feel like I'm spending too much time on an app or social platform, I'll just delete it on my phone. When I realized reddit and twitter and facebook were all cancer, I just deleted them.

Now, when I need to kill time by browsing on my phone, I open up Google News. After 3 headlines, I realize the news is boring and I close it and put my phone away. This system might not work for everyone but it worked for me

Same. My friends laugh when I type facebook.com into my browser but it keeps it from being a habitual thing.

Social media is high key a disease.

I just don’t like the whole idea of reels and short dumb trendy edits. When I want to see a good video part I want to be sitting down comfortably with 0 distractions, and really appreciate the effort and love that went into making a video part. I feel like social media has really ruined that aspect of action sports, specifically skiing.

I deleted my IG a few months ago and honestly i dont miss it. For me it was a decision based off of not really wanting to only portray the best of my life, it seems like a platform that everyone's bragging on and posting only when they look the best or do cool things. I understand showing cool stuff to your friends but how many close friends was i actually interacting with, most of the followers and people i followed were loose acquaintances or people i knew from years ago. yeah it stinks not being able to see what people are up to but again compulsively checking and wanting to compare to others isn't a good way to live. Not that i was addicted or trying to compare my self i just think that the premise of it all is kind of gross, and i have two younger sisters and the way that women(IG models) are portrayed or portray themselves on the app is kind of unfair to normal girls. Being monetized for having fake lips and butts and posting nearly naked photos. I think that people put to much self worth into social media thats why i deleted it. I still have FB and mainly use it for marketplace, i avoid anything controversial and never post. Twitter i just use mainly for sports updates and dont have the app on my phone. Altogether i do think that social media has and is a scary place and something that sadly is dominating the culture. Im scared for when i have kids and what they might potentially see on social media, it defiantly leads to depression and insecurities in younger people yet all the creators and companies want to do is monetize it.... sadly who can blame them

I deleted all social media apps off of my phone, my problem was youtube and instagram on the computer, countless hours wasted especially with a acl surgery and quarantine. Literally just heard of this chrome extension called self control, it blocks out anything that you want for as long as you want. I blocked YT and insta and its crazy how many times during homework I have just mindlessly tried to go on both of the sites with no goal whatsoever just to have it blocked. It just becomes a habit after a while.

I haven't done either in a while but this summer I used to drive home from work thinking about the bong rip I was gonna take before hopping in a nice cool shower. Pretty much every day I would load up the bowl piece, pick up my phone to play music, but then sit there scrolling thru Instagram, Twitter, NS, Snapchat for an hour on average without ever having touched my bong one foot in front of me. Crazy how addicting they are to monkey brain.

Deleted snapchat about 3 years ago for this reason among others. I just found myself constantly weighed down by the social obligation of not leaving people on read. Say all you want about doing what you want on snapchat, but if you participate, you have to conform to its social expectations. Otherwise people will subconsciously interpret your aloofness as disinterest in them. (obviously this is because people generally care about themselves). If you try to play by your own rules you will alienate people in real life. It's better to just not play.

Instagram is what I use for messaging people because there are hardly any social conventions on how you have to interact with people. But as of late I've found myself scrolling through my feed or swiping through stories and then verbally saying "I don't care" while turning off my phone, because I don't. Who does. Which begs the question why I should even keep my instagram, because who cares?

Tiktok is basically heroin. I know people with over 7 hours of tiktok screen time a day. It absolutely renders you a mindless husk without a sliver of focus or discipline. Only ever had it for 6 months during quarantine 2020 and I deleted it as soon as I realized how much time it sucked out of my life.
