If you use a song on an edit and the artist claims copyright do they fine you? Or do they just mute it like nick westlands SU?

Honestly curious to hear how the copyright etiquette has evolved with everybody and their mom stacking clips these days for ig. I remember 5-10 years ago always being told by teachers and stuff that if you use any music that you didn’t write yourself and don’t have written permission to use, Taylor Swift is gonna come sue your ass off and you’ll spend the rest of your life in debt/prison trying to pay off damages. I know for real ski they all use obscure music that they all gotta buy licensing for, but for the most part it seems nobody really gives a shit anymore and everything’s kinda fair game as long as it’s not on tv. Still really like hearing a lot of mixtape stuff and leaks off SoundCloud being used.

Taylor Swift sucks

If you upload to YouTube it will automatically recognize the track and pay the ad revenue to the artist that made the song with no copyright strikes or problems IF you are an non-monetized channel.

Songs owned by certain labels (Sony usually, I’ve noticed) are just blocked outright but it’s pretty unusual for the V channel, at least. Also, it depends on the country it’s being played in. For example, most of our videos are blocked in Cuba, North Korea, and sometimes Denmark for whatever reason.

If your video does get blocked, you can appeal and try to explain to YT that your ski video counts as fair use since it is not a way to listen to the song specifically and is transformative in nature. I have gotten two videos unblocked that way.

Overall if you’re not trying to make money from YouTube views it’s pretty chill, for now...

^ what vishnu said...some tracks are blocked like most of the black keys, jayz etc. There is a youtube page where you can search for songs that have copyright issues but it doesn't work that well. Personally I have an alias account where I upload a 2:00 track before I start editing to figure out if the song is blocked. That way you don't cry after seeing that all of your hard work was for nothing.

When you’re editing your seggy, set the music to play at 103% speed. I’m not sure how sophisticated youtubes algorithms are these days but this worked last time I tried it.

Or export final project and reverse it in a new timeline for a new export. Enter a turnstile and proceed in a reverse timeline witnessing everything that happens in reverse. Thus watching the edit normally.....TENET

I gave up on uploading to youtube, music blocking is pretty much the only reason I upload on NS now (well that and the fact that our videos get like 2,000 views here instead of 28 on youtube)

The labels just monetize it.

But for real bigger brands and athletes should pay for this shit not just trying to use music for free.
