Shell snowpants insulation?

can someone please explain to me what you're supposed to layer yourself with when wearing shell snowpants? Obviously with a shell jacket you're supposed to wear a down mid layer + a non cotton sweater but i don't seem to see anything like that for your legs.

I usually just where a base layer pant then a pair of sweatpants on top if it’s really cold

Sweatpants. I wear these synthetic nike style athletic pants which are thinner than sweatpants but dont stick to your legs like the skin tight long johns and shit like that.

Track pants.

Seriously I just wear base layers or shorts if deep into the spring. They make different weight base layers.

Also I don't wear a down mid layer or anything like that. Usually just a base, a fairly lightweight tech hoodie and a shell though I haven't spent too much time skiing very cold areas.

long johns if you run cold, maybe some light sweatpants or something if you want something mid range

i run hot so i usually just wear a pair of board shorts underneath, i don't need extra heat there and the shorts give me an extra layer to sit on

Don’t understand how some people can wear even slightly insulated pants.
