betzPicked up a set of three skis over the summer and have already sold one and ridden the other two. The one I sold were some soul 7's lol, but held onto the 184 Volkl M5's and 184 Moment Blister Pros.
I love love loved the Blister pros. They were great in the pow of course, cut through chop like a hot knife through butter and carved big ol turns like nobody's business.
Now the Volkls.......
Wondering if any of you guys have experience with these skis. I just could not ski them well for the life of me. Every other ski I've owned up to this point have been full twin tip- 2012 Rossignol S3's 173's, 2019 Moment PB&J 188's, 2012 Bent chetlers, 184 Moment Wildcat 108's. So i'm not sure if I'm just so used to twins that a more directional ski doesn't make sense to me.
The Volkl's were fine on mellower slopes, but taking them on a steep groomed black run I could not get them to carve like at all. On the blue slopes I did fine, but it always seemed like they want to carve biiiiiig sweeping turns, and they almost feel like they lock you into that, and if you want to break them loose they need a considerable amount of effort. They also felt like they did a lot better on softer but choppier groomers than somewhat icy morning corduroy even though the edges were sharp. I did like they made any choppy snow feel like basically nothing. But I had no confidence in my ability to control them.
Was thinking I'd keep these as my crappy conditions icy groomer ski but seeing as I turn into a friggin jerry trying to ski them I'm thinking of either shelfing them for a while or selling. Can anybody attest to this? I know the M5's aren't newschooler skis but hey I thought they'd be fun for going super fast on groomers when there's nothing better to do.
Greg_KThe ski bases on the M5 are edge high and just need a few passes on a stone grinder to flatten and then reset the base and side edge bevels.
Very common I’m afraid as my last few skis have been edge high(2 Volkls in there) and my last set of Volkl Deacon 72 Masters were base high. An edge high ski will feel slower edge to edge, harder to pivot, heavier and feel “stuck in a turn” like you are describing. You’re not insane! Lol
My base high Deacons felt super unstable as if you were skiing on marbles but a quick stone grind and they were transformed. Ski awesome now!
Just inform the tech that the skis are edge high and they can measure at the shop and make them flat again.
betzI had a full tune on these done actually, and while I'm not sure 100% if they gave it a base grind it certainly looked like they did. also they were used skis and they had a core shot when I bought them that was patched up by the ski shop. But actually it came partially undone while I was skiing. Idk why, but they stuck a piece of metal where the core shot was, the thin layer of ptex above the metal came off while the metal and ptex below it stayed in place. Here is a couple pics:
Maybe this affected how they felt, but I'm not sure. It was only on one ski and I didn't notice a huge difference between the two tbh.

Greg_KLooks like there is decent structure on the base but they still could be edge high. If you have a straight metal edge like a ruler or scraper, you can put it across the base with some light behind it to check if any light is coming through under the middle base.
think I’d be getting them to re-do the repair as well!

ColingarnesBeen rocking Custom Pink Kartel 98’s for a solid 4 years.
Just ordered my second pair of skis and spoiled myself and scooped another pair of customs. This time Jeffrey 110’s with soft flex and grizzly corn base. Pretty damn stoked to rip these next season.
Kbob94Mounted these up finally! Stoked how they turned out and hyped to rip them next season too!
