Depends on what/how they want to ski really. It’s best to learn on rental skis because they’re torsionally soft, which means it’s really easy for beginners to turn them and learn the motions of skiing. Once they get the basics down, it’s up to them to sort of decide if they want to start skiing park, or racing, or whatever else they wanna do!

For what it's worth, my experience is that ex-bladers usually have awful technique (at first) but progress really fast. And they're usually happier on near-center mounted skis. Get a decent blader a center-mounted, slightly rockered, torsionally soft park ski and they will likely be skid turning most runs, sliding easy rails/boxes, and spinning jumps within a week. If you're a ski purist, this is terrible advice, so take it for what you will. Basically, it comes down to: Is this a good way to learn to ski well? No. But do they generally have more fun, more quickly? Yes.

As someone who grew up rollerblading, skiing came very naturally to me. I learned on a pair of directional, flat tailed blizzards and was french frying my way down blues by the end of my first day. I didn't start to have a ton of fun until I got on some more progressively mounted twin tips. Pretty much what Twig said.

Way back when I made the switch, I had basic ski skills from a few trips worth of lessons when I was young, but the park came easy to me when I restarted skiing. I found myself quickly frustrated at rentals with flat tails. Even though I couldn’t ski backward, coming off rails/boxes switch came naturally and not being able to land and then revert was irritating.

I ended up, more by chance, on softish, fairly narrow park skis which let me have fun on the park features and improve my traditional ski skills out the park.

my reccomemdation would be to get them on rental twin tips as even if they’ve never skied they’re going to be curious about skiing switch. If that’s not possible finding them used, fairly short for their height, narrow and soft twin tips would be a good bet. This allows them not to care about damaging the skis as they learn, get a sense of what a decent ski rides like without committing to dropping €€€ on something they might not get into. Decent quality rental boots is a strong recommendation as they’re going to miss the lack of precise control from their blades and sloppy rental boots that don’t allow you to control the skis sets them up for a bad time.

after they’ve found they want to get into it, like any skier leaving the rentals behind, they need good fitting boots before dropping cash on skis.
